ThunderWolves Shatter Numerous Record At RMAC Championships And Set Many NCAA Provisionals, Looking Ahead To Nationals

GUNNISON, Colo. - The ThunderWolves wrapped up their 2026 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Indoor Championships campaign inside the Western Colorado University Fieldhouse with a weekend defined by resilience, records, and a wave of NCAA provisional marks.

When competition concluded Saturday afternoon in Gunnison, the CSU Pueblo men secured a fourth-place team finish with 63 points, while the women placed sixth overall with 58 points in a loaded 14-team field. On both sides, University of Colorado Colorado Springs captured the team championships in dominant fashion — scoring 157.5 points to win the women's title and 124 points on the men's side. New Mexico Highlands University finished second for the women with 76.5 points, while Colorado School of Mines took runner-up honors in the men's standings with 84 points.

For the Pack, however, the story extended well beyond team placement. The weekend was about individual breakthroughs, conference titles, shattered records, and positioning for the NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships, set for March 13–14 in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

The meet opened with a statement from Mary Scoggins in the women's pentathlon. Battling through five grueling events, she secured a runner-up finish and recorded an NCAA provisional score that will more than likely punch her ticket to nationals. It set the tone for a ThunderWolves squad ready to compete at a national level.

In the men's 5,000 meters, CSU Pueblo's distance group delivered critical points and provisional marks. Caden Schweer ran a personal-best 15:09.01 to finish seventh and hit the NCAA provisional standard. Just behind him, Kameron Eustace placed eighth in 15:15.52, posting a season-best effort that also met the provisional mark. The back-to-back finishes showcased the depth and consistency of the Pack's veteran distance crew.

The men's distance medley relay team — already nationally qualified entering the weekend — reinforced its dominance. Caleb McLeod, Ryan King, Tim Anstett, and Jon Sweepe powered to the RMAC championship in 10:03.15, winning the event by more than six seconds while adding another NCAA provisional to their résumé.

On the women's side, Jadyn Herron, Riley Wilson, Charlotte Young, and Helen Braybrook delivered one of the most historic performances of the weekend. The quartet finished runner-up in the DMR but shattered the Western Colorado Fieldhouse record with a time of 11:55.25, earning an NCAA provisional mark in the process.

The throws circle brought another major highlight for CSU Pueblo. Pueblo native and returning All-American Xavier Freeman finished runner-up in the men's shot put with a throw of 18.39 meters, hitting the NCAA provisional standard and continuing his steady climb toward nationals.

Then came one of the most impressive performances of the entire championship meet. Febe Wessels captured the RMAC title in the women's shot put with a mark of 15.56 meters. Her throw set a new Western Colorado Fieldhouse record and ranks as the seventh-best throw in NCAA Division II history. The performance not only secured the conference crown but firmly positioned her among the nation's elite heading into nationals.

Saturday's finals only amplified the momentum.

Jon Sweepe continued his breakout season by winning the men's mile in 4:11.85, adding yet another NCAA provisional to his growing list of accolades. Helen Braybrook, competing outside her signature 800 meters, placed third in the women's mile with a time of 5:01.06, earning a provisional mark in an event that is not her primary specialty.

The men's 800 meters delivered one of the most electric races of the championship. Tim Anstett surged to the RMAC title in 1:51.48, breaking the conference record and the Western Colorado Fieldhouse record while hitting the NCAA provisional standard. Close behind him, Caleb McLeod tied for second in 1:51.61 — also under the previous RMAC indoor record and good for another provisional mark. It was a statement from the ThunderWolves' middle-distance unit.

Charlotte Young added to the tally in the women's 800 meters, finishing third in 2:13.38 to secure her own NCAA provisional. Jadyn Herron later closed out the meet with a runner-up finish in the women's 3,000 meters, running 10:22.75 to hit the provisional standard and cap off a standout weekend that included both distance and relay success.

When the final event concluded, head coach Matt Morris and his squad walked away from Gunnison with conference champions, broken records, facility records, personal bests, and a long list of NCAA provisional marks.

The regular season may be complete, but the ThunderWolves are far from finished.

With numerous provisional standards likely to hold, CSU Pueblo now turns its attention to Virginia Beach and the NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships.
