PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo will make its 2025 season debut on Thursday evening in the ThunderBowl as the nationally sixth-ranked ThunderWolves play the first of their 11 regular-season games against South Dakota Mines. Kickoff for Thursday's season opener is set for 6:05 p.m.
Thursday's game will not only mark the first game of the 2025 season for the Pack, but it will mark the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener for both teams. It also marks the second straight season that the Pack are facing the Hardrockers to open the season. Last season, the Pack collected a 35-6 win in Rapid City, S.D., to begin the 2024 campaign.
The Pack, who will be led this season by third-year head coach
Philip Vigil, return 17 starters and 65 lettermen from last season's 10-2 team that earned the program's ninth all-time RMAC title after going a perfect 9-0 in league play and earning the No. 1 seed in Super Region Four and a first round bye in the NCAA Division II playoffs. The Pack concluded last season with a 26-23 second-round home playoff loss to Minnesota State. The Pack's two losses came against NCAA Playoff teams that posted a 22-6 overall record last season.
"We are excited to get the chance to play someone else, and we're looking forward to hosting South Dakota Mines on our home field on Thursday," Vigil said. "Our fall camp has been great. It's a little bit of a unique situation this year with being able to have three weeks of fall camp before fall semester classes began on campus. We've had three straight weeks of practicing, meetings, and team-building exercises to help get this group going in the right direction."
Since the end of last season, the Pack has prepared for the 2025 season with 15 practices in the spring, an entire summer of workouts, and three-plus weeks of fall camp.
"We've had a great spring, a great summer and that has bled into fall camp. I'm very excited about this year's team," added Vigil, who is 18-5 as the Pack's head coach.
By opening the season with an RMAC game at home against South Dakota Mines, the Pack will once again have a bye week on Oct. 25, before concluding the regular season with RMAC games at Western Colorado, at Colorado School of Mines, and at home against Chadron State.
Entering the 2025 season, the Pack has won 16 consecutive RMAC games dating to the 2023 season. The 16-game conference win streak is currently the second-longest active streak in Division II football, as only Kutztown (Pa.) has a longer streak at 17 consecutive conference wins.
The Pack returns eight of its 17 starters on the offensive side of the ball, including senior quarterback
Roman Fuller (Decatur, Texas/University of Tulsa), who will start under center in Thursday's opener. Last season, Fuller set new single-season school records for completion percentage (70.0 percent) and passing efficiency (176.0). On the season, Fuller was 137-for-195 passing for 1,842 yards and had 18 touchdown passes and four interceptions.
"I am excited about the potential for our offense. We return quite a few players on the offensive side of the ball," Vigil said. "Roman has had a great fall camp. He's playing at a very high level right now, completing the ball at a very high percentage, which is something he did well last year."
Even though Fuller is the expected starter at quarterback this season, Vigil is impressed with the competitiveness in the quarterback room. The other quarterbacks vying to play this season are redshirt freshman
Cam McGuire (Dallas, Texas/Woodrow Wilson), sophomore Brayden Doman (Colorado Springs, Colo./University of Arizona), and junior
Chase Nelson (Monmouth, Ore./Adams State).
"It's a very competitive room. We've got several guys in that room who can play at a very high level. I think that every single quarterback in our room could probably start for multiple teams in our conference," the coach added. "We've got Roman (Fuller), who is a Division I transfer that set the school record for completion percentage and led the nation in completion percentage last year. And behind him, we've got Cam (McGuire), who is a redshirt freshman and is a really talented football player, who can throw it and make plays with his legs. We also have Brayden (Dorman), who was a four-star recruit coming out of high school and competed for a spot at the University of Arizona the past two seasons, and we have Chase (Nelson), who transferred from Adams State and started games for the Grizzlies, and actually started against us two years ago. He is a dynamic dual-threat-type kid and has done it at a high level within our conference.
"So right there, I really believe we have four quarterbacks who could start for multiple teams in our league. It's a good thing to have depth at quarterback and create competition within that room, and it's going to be a battle every single week to see who's going to get on the bus."
Two of the strongest positions on offense in terms of returning starters from last season is at receiver and offensive line. The offensive line welcomes back four of its five starters from last season, while the receiving corps returns six of its top nine pass catchers from a season ago.
The returning starters on the offensive line are senior left guard
Arthur Braach (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo East), junior left tackle
Tyler Ethridge (Midlothian, Texas/Midlothian), senior right tackle
Jaiden Jones (Dallas, Texas/Tyler JC), and senior right guard
Domingo Prince II (Aurora, Colo./Cherry Creek). All four of those players were named All-RMAC selections last season, while Ethridge was named to the Preseason All-RMAC Team. The lone new starter this season on the line this season will be sophomore center and Murray State University transfer
Preston Jarvis (Westfield, Ind.). Jarvis is listed as the No. 1 center on the team's preseason depth chart, which was released late last week.
"I think the position I am more excited about is our offensive line. When you have four guys that have played together as many snaps as those guys have played together, I think that is a recipe for success," the coach said. "Because realistically, it doesn't matter who your quarterback is, who your tailback is, who your receivers are. If you're not able to protect and get movement up front, then you're going to be a very average offense."
In addition to returning four of its five starting offensive linemen from last season, the Pack's receiving corps welcomes back three starters in redshirt senior receiver
Reggie Retzlaff (Corona, Calif./Riverside City College), senior receiver
Zack Rakowsky (Loveland, Colo./Loveland), and senior tight end
Tyler Dvorak (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek). Those three players combined to catch 125 passes for 1,899 yards and haul in 17 touchdowns, including Retzlaff tying his own school record with 12 touchdown receptions.
Retzlaff, who was named the RMAC Offensive Player of the Year and was also a finalist for the Harlon Hill Award and a consensus All-America, was the main target in the Pack's passing game last season as he set new single-season school records for receptions (67), receiving yards (1,228), and touchdowns (12). Retzlaff enters the 2025 season sitting fifth in career receptions (115), third in career receiving yards (2,033), and tied for first in career touchdown receptions (24). Retzlaff was named to both the Preseason All-RMAC Team and the D2Football.com Preseason Elite 100 First-Team Offense Watch List and was named to the Shine Bowl 1000 Watch List.
Rakowsky, who was a First-Team All-RMAC selection last season as a punt returner, caught 37 passes for 453 yards and hauled in two touchdown passes and enters the season sitting tied for sixth in career receptions (112), tied for eighth in career receiving yards (1,574), and tied for ninth in career touchdown receptions (12) and has tallied 1,968 career all-purpose yards, while Dvorak is a two-time Honorable Mention All-RMAC selection and finished last season with 21 catches for 218 yards and had three touchdown receptions.
Along with the eight returning starters from last season on offense, the Pack also welcomes back two former All-RMAC performers from 2023 in redshirt senior receiver
Andrew Cook (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge) and senior running back
Kiahn Martinez (Denver, Colo./University of Idaho). Cook and Martinez missed the entire 2024 season after suffering injuries during spring football following the end of the 2023 season.
"Both of those guys add such an element to us on the football field. They're both extremely experienced and bring such unbelievable ability from a playmaking standpoint," Vigil said. "Both of them are All-Conference players, and the thing that's been super encouraging to see is that both of those guys were voted single digits this year. I'm excited to watch those guys be able to lace it up and go out there against another opponent and do what they do."
Cook, who was a Second-Team All-RMAC selection in both 2022 and 2023, caught 46 passes for 566 yards and had seven touchdown receptions in 2023 and is second on the school's career touchdown reception list with 21, along with being eighth in career receptions with 108, and tied for eighth in career receiving yards with 1,574. In addition, he has gained 2,411 career all-purpose yards.
Meanwhile, Martinez was a Second-Team All-RMAC selection in 2023 after gaining 796 rushing yards and scored seven touchdowns. He is 22nd on the school's career rushing chart with 1,136 yards and has scored 11 career rushing touchdowns.
In the first depth chart of the season, Martinez is listed as the No. 1 running back, while Cook is one of three players listed No. 1 at the H-Receiver spot. He shares the No. 1 spot with Rakowsky and senior receiver
Reece Robinson (Los Angeles, Calif./Antelope Valley College).
"Both Kiahn and Andrew bring a lot to us on the field from a playmaking standpoint, but also bring a ton of leadership to our offense," added Vigil.
While the offense returns 10 players with starting experience, the Pack welcomes back five starters on defense, but despite the lack of returning starters, the Pack defense brings back a lot of players who saw game action in 2024.
"One thing we did really well last season on defense was we rolled a lot of guys in and out of the lineup. At the defensive line position, we had four guys in the game at once, but we played 12 guys last year who got significant reps," the Pack coach said. "We allowed a lot of guys to get experience and that allowed us to stay healthy."
The Pack lost four of its five starters on the defensive line from last season, with the lone returning starter on the line being junior defensive tackle
Jusiah Sampleton (Giddings, Texas/Giddings). Last season, Sampleton earned Honorable Mention All-RMAC honors after recording 38 tackles, 5.5 tackles for a loss, and one sack.
"We did lose a lot of starters up front, but we have a lot of guys that are coming back that played a lot of snaps for us, and I think those players are excited about the opportunity to start for us this year," said Vigil.
Some of those new starters this season on the defensive line are senior defensive end
Cameron Smith (Parker, Colo./Stephen F. Austin), sophomore defensive end
A.J. Jordan (Colorado Springs, Colo./Vista Ridge), and senior defensive tackle
Kaleb Manning (Clute, Texas/Midwestern State). Last season, the Pack's four departed defensive line starters (
Dominick Fini,
Cody Ramming,
Makeah Scippio, and
James Turrentine) combined for 119 total tackles, 34 tackles for a loss, and 18.5 sacks.
Despite the lack of returning starters, Vigil has been impressed with his defense during fall camp.
"Our defense has had an excellent camp. With as much experience as we're returning on the offensive side of the ball, the offense has not just taken over in fall camp," added Vigil. "There are some days the defense has absolutely dominated, and that's encouraging as a head coach. We've got guys making plays on both sides of the ball. Our defense is going to be salty this season."
Other key returning defensive players are junior linebacker
Gary Seidenberger (Fredericksburg, Texas/Fredericksburg), senior cornerback
Keith Mckaney, Jr. (Avondale, Ariz./Desert Edge), senior safety
Peyton Shaw (Savannah, Texas/Midwestern State), senior defensive back
Ben Wilson (Pearland, Texas/Midwestern State) and junior safety
Kahden Rullo (Denver, Colo./Grandview). Seidenberger, Mckaney, Jr., and Rullo were all named to the Preseason All-RMAC Team, and Seidenberger was named to the D2Football.com Preseason Elite 100 Defense Squad List.
Seidenberger is a two-time All-RMAC selection and was named the RMAC Defensive Freshman of the Year in 2023, and last season, he led the team in tackles with 87 and added 7.5 tackles for a loss, three sacks, two pass break-ups, and one interception, while Mckaney is also a two-time All-RMAC selection and last season, recorded 25 tackles, five pass break-ups, one interception and blocked one kick.
Shaw was an Honorable Mention All-RMAC selection last season after recording 37 tackles, four pass break-ups, one tackle for a loss, and an interception, while Wilson earned Honorable Mention All-RMAC accolades last season after tallying 23 tackles, a team-leading 11 pass break-ups, and a blocked kick, and Rullo was an Honorable Mention All-RMAC selection in 2024 as he recorded 37 tackles, three interceptions, two tackles for a loss and two sacks.
"We have a lot of guys on defense that have been through the fire and understand what it's about. They understand what the standard is on the dark side and have been leading the way," the coach stated.
Last season, the Pack defense allowed just 244 points and 3,987 yards for an average of 4.4 yards per play and they also forced 21 turnovers, recorded 40 sacks, and 87 tackles for a loss. The Pack was tied for fourth in Division II in sacks and was tied for 16th in interceptions. In addition, the Pack was third in the RMAC in pass defense as they allowed 197.9 yards per game, and their opponents had just a 106.05 passing efficiency last season.
The Pack special teams return its top kickoff and punt returner, along with two punters and a kicker, but must find a replacement for starting kicker
Jacob Willig, who went into the portal at the end of the season and is now playing at Northern Colorado. Last season, Willig was 9-for-10 on field goals and 27-for-28 on extra points and was third in scoring with 54 points.
"We lost Jacob (Willig) to the portal, and this year, we've had an open competition all fall long to determine our new kicker this season," Vigil said. "We've charted every single PAT, every single field goal, and every single thing that we do. We haven't yet decided on who's going to be our place kicker, but it's been a tough battle."
Two of those kickers battling for place-kicking duties are junior
Evan Lyons (Superior, Colo./Monarch) and junior transfer
Jackson Smith (Centennial, Colo./Santa Barbara City College). Last season, Lyons was 5-for-10 on field goals and was 29-for-32 on extra points and earned the RMAC Summit Award, while Smith was 9-for-15 on field goals and 24-for-26 on extra points. The third kicker in the mix is junior Western Carolina transfer
Corbin Shirley (Seneca, S.C).
The Pack also welcomes back two punters, including senior
Regan Baker (Brisbane, Australia/Idaho State), who punted 47 times for 1,824 yards and averaged 38.8 yards per punt, which was ninth best in the league. He also had four punts of 50 or more yards. The other returning punter is sophomore
Caleb Harner (Erie, Colo./Erie), who punted three times for 129 yards and averaged 43 yards per punt.
Junior running back
Moosah Alsaffar (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) returned four kickoffs for 62 yards and averaged 15.5 yards per return, while Rakowsky returned 27 punts for 236 yards and averaged 8.7 yards per return, which was fifth in the RMAC.
Much like its offense and defense, the Pack's special teams also have guys who have played a lot of snaps on teams returning this season.
"We were rolling guys in and out on special teams and had a bunch of different guys play, and that is something I'm excited about this season," added Vigil.
The two biggest strengths of the Pack's special teams last season were its ability to block
kicks and its punt return defense.
Last year, the Pack tied a single-season school record with seven blocked kicks, which was eighth best in Division II football and second in the RMAC. On the season, the Pack blocked three punts and four field goals. The three blocked punts were fifth best in Division II. Sophomore linebacker
Shallum Peter (Dallas, Texas/Lake Highlands) led the way with three blocks, which is tied with Corey Orth for most in a single season by a Pack player and was fourth best in Division II and tops in the RMAC.
In addition to being one of the top kick blocking teams in Division II, the Pack finished the 2024 season tied for fourth in Division II in punt return defense as they allowed their 12 opponents to average just 2.00 yards per punt return. The Pack's opponents returned 12 punts for 24 yards on the season.
"We want to be aggressive in every phase of the game, including special teams. Coach Mac (Alexander) does an unbelievable job with our teams," said Vigil when asked about his special teams' unit.
Vigil says that several players have stood out this fall and will play a role on this year's team. Among those players are transfer receiver
Dedrek Taylor-Akins (Fontana, Calif./Northeastern State), redshirt freshman running back
Russell Patton (Denver, Colo./Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Early College), and redshirt junior defensive lineman
Jaylen Booth (Merced, Calif./Merced College), to name a few.
"Dedrek (Taylor-Akins) is a guy who was here in the spring and has had an unbelievable fall camp. He's been making a ton of contested catches. Russell (Patton) is a guy that we redshirted last year at the tailback position who is going to be special. He's a really good football player, and we're really excited about his future. Jaylen (Booth) is another guy that we redshirted last year as a junior college kid, and he's done an unbelievable job of rushing the passer. He's a guy that I think is going to be able to create some havoc off the edge and get after the quarterback," Vigil said.
Vigil's third team does have several changes to the coaching staff from a season ago as
Neal Davis joined the Pack before spring practice as the offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator, while
Trevor Hopkins joins the staff as an offensive line assistant and
Dennis Osagiede joined the staff as an assistant working with the defensive tackles and former Pack All-American receiver
Paul Browning joins the staff as the receivers coach. In addition, Vigil promoted tight ends coach
Jordan Dodge to offensive coordinator, and
Thomas Webb, Jr., moves onto the coaching staff working with the cornerbacks after playing for the Pack during the 2024 season.
"I think probably the most important thing that I do as a head coach is to evaluate who we bring into this program, and that is both as players and, most importantly, coaches," Vigil said. "Coach Dodge has done an unbelievable job, not only with our players, but with our offensive staff and making sure that we're all on the same page, making sure that our identity and what we do offensively is seen in everything that we do. We also have a new offensive line coach,
Neal Davis, who was at Bemidji State last year. They advanced to the round of eight of the playoffs and he coached the Remington Award winner as his center was the best offensive lineman in the country last year. Really excited about him and his family being here. Paul (Browning) comes in and coaches our receivers. He was around a little last year in a volunteer role, and when the opportunity came to hire a former alum, a former All-American, and a guy that demands a lot of respect, that was a no-brainer for me to be able to bring him in. Trevor (Hopkins), who's assisting our offensive line, has also done a good job."
One of the biggest keys for the Pack in Thursday's season opener against South Dakota Mines is to take care of the Pack.
"The first game, there is so much unknown going into the game. The first game is more about us. It's about us executing our game plan and the things we've instilled in them in the spring, in the summer, and in the fall, and go out and execute at a high level," said Vigil. "If we can do what we do at a high level all the way through the game, I think we're going to give ourselves a great chance to win the football game."
Thursday's game with South Dakota Mines is the first of two consecutive Thursday home games for the Pack, and Vigil hopes to see an electric atmosphere in the ThunderBowl.
"Playing the ThunderBowl is a special thing. Our first game is always a Red Out and having it on a Thursday night, I'm hoping we have this place just absolutely packed full," Vigil said. "We're going to be opening our new suites (on the west side of the stadium). They look fantastic. There are a lot of exciting things that are happening right now with CSU Pueblo Football, and I hope the campus and the community comes out and supports what we're doing here."
Thursday's season opener with South Dakota Mines will mark the ninth-ever meeting between the two schools, which began in 2016. The Pack is a perfect 8-0 all-time against the Hardrockers after collecting a 35-6 win in last season's opener in Rapid City, S.D and is 22-0 all-time against football-playing schools from the state of South Dakota.
In last year's win at South Dakota Mines, the Pack passed for a single-game school record 548 yards as they completed a single-game school record 35 passes and had two receivers – Retzlaff and
Taylor Tosches – combine to catch 22 passes for 392 yards as Retzlaff caught 11 passes for a single-game school record 241 yards and had three touchdown receptions, while Tosches added 11 catches for 151 yards and had a touchdown reception.
Since the Pack football program restarted in 2008, CSU Pueblo is 14-2 in season opening games and is 28-10 all-time in season openers since becoming a four-year school in 1963 and is 12-4 in RMAC home openers since restarting the football program in 2008.
The South Dakota Mines game will be the first of 11 regular season games for the Pack, including one of the nine games in the RMAC. Five of those 11 games will be played at home in the CSU ThunderBowl.
Following Thursday's season opener at home with South Dakota Mines, the Pack will remain at home as they host Fort Hays State for a 6:05 p.m. non-conference game on Thursday, Sept. 4. Fort Hays State, who opens its 2025 season with a home game on Thursday against Angelo State, earned 66 votes in the preseason AFCA Division II Coaches' Poll.
ABOUT SOUTH DAKOTA MINES
South Dakota Mines comes into the 2025 season looking to post its fourth winning season in the last five years, as the Hardrockers were tabbed to finish tied for fifth in the Preseason RMAC Coaches' Poll with Black Hills State, as both teams earned 43 points.
Last season, South Dakota Mines, which finished with a 6-5 overall record and a 5-4 mark in the RMAC, ended the season winning three straight games, and the Hardrockers have the longest active win streak among RMAC schools.
The Hardrockers had a lot of turnover in their roster from last season, as they return just six starters and bring back two All-RMAC players from a season ago.
"There are always a lot of unknowns heading into the first game of the season. We don't know what personnel is going to look like, and you don't really know what schemes are going to look like," Vigil said when asked about South Dakota Mines. "You have an idea from watching previous tape and things of that nature, but there's still an element of the unknown."
Despite not knowing a lot about their opponent on Thursday, Vigil expects that South Dakota Mines will come in and be ready to play.
"I know we're going to see a well-coached team that will play extremely hard," the Pack coach said. "We've had some battles with them over the last two years, and Coach (Charlie) Flohr and I go way back to our time at Northwest Missouri State. He knows what a winning culture looks like and how to instill a winning culture, and that's what he has done at South Dakota Mines."
South Dakota Mines, who is coached by sixth-year head coach Charlie Florhr, welcomes back two of its top five running backs, one of its top five receivers, and three of its top eight tacklers from last season. Flohr is 26-22 as the Hardrockers' coach.
For the second straight season, the Hardrockers will have a different starting quarterback as junior Ashur Carraha takes over at quarterback after transferring from Stonehill College. In his three seasons at NCAA Division II Stonehill, Carraha passed for 3,655 yards and had 29 touchdown passes and gained another 328 yards rushing and scored two touchdowns.
In addition to Carraha, the top returning offensive players for the Hardrockers are redshirt senior receiver Mason Galbreath, senior running back Ty Harris, and redshirt junior running back Dawson Dunbar. Galbreath caught 36 passes for 446 yards and had four touchdown receptions, while Harris gained 40 yards on 25 carries and scored a touchdown, and Dunbar carried the ball 61 times for 204 yards and scored five touchdowns.
The offensive line welcomes back two starters – redshirt senior left tackle AJ Kelly and redshirt junior center Jackson Busch. Kelly was named to the Preseason All-RMAC Team.
Meanwhile on defense, the Hardrockers welcome back four starters, including senior safety Will Lester, who recorded 51 tackles, four tackles for a loss, and five pass break-ups en route to earning Honorable Mention All-RMAC honors in 2024.
Other key returners on defense are senior defensive end Nathan Kneubuhler (25 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 7.5 tackles for loss), redshirt junior defensive tackle Thomas Fields (17 tackles, six tackles for a loss, two sacks), and redshirt junior linebacker Gabe Frerichs (three tackles).
On special teams, South Dakota Mines will break in a new punter and kicker, along with welcoming back one of its top kick returners in Harris, who returned three kicks for 55 yards and averaged 18.3 yards per return.
The kicking and punter duties will be handled this season by redshirt sophomore Sam Eccles, while the top punt returner is junior Jadon Lemmings, who is in his first season with the Hardrockers after transferring from Moorpark College.
