PUEBLO, Colo. - Colorado State University Pueblo Baseball used two home runs, including a two-run shot by freshman left fielder
Noah Williams (Carson, Calif./Redondo Union) in the second inning to help lead the ThunderWolves to a 4-2 win in Monday's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series finale over Colorado School of Mines at Rawlings Field.
With the win, the Pack takes its second straight series in league play and improves to 20-14 overall and 10-6 in the league, while Mines falls to 11-26 overall and 6-14 in the league. With its three wins this weekend, the Pack has now won 20 games in a season for fourth consecutive season.
In Monday's series finale, both teams finished with six hits and they combined for five errors in the contest as the Pack had three errors and Mines committed two errors.
Senior left fielder
Wyatt Reginato (Cottonwood, Calif./Folsom Lake) and sophomore center fielder
Logan Kelly (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Capistrano Valley Christian) each had two hits to pace the Pack offense. For the series, the Pack outscored the Orediggers, 29-25 and outhit Mines, 45-43.
After Mines scored two runs in the top of the third inning, neither team would score the remainder of the game as Mines put up six straight zeroes on the scoreboard, while the Pack also put up six straight zeroes on the board after Williams' two-run blast in the second inning.
Junior
Jacob Petersheim (Broadway, Va./Broadway) continued his stellar starting pitching performance as he tossed a career-high seven innings and allowed five hits and two runs (one earned run), while striking out two and walking none in his 78-pitch outing.
Petersheim has made two straight starts for the Pack and in those two starts, he has tossed 12 innings and allowed 10 hits and five runs (three earned), while striking out four and walking two. He improved to 3-1 on the season with Monday's win and in 34.2 innings this season, he has recorded 28 strikeouts and walked just two and has now lowered his ERA to 6.49 on the year.
In addition to Petersheim, sophomore
Jack Novak (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Thunder Ridge) tossed two shutout innings as he allowed one hit, while walking one and fanning one to earn his third save of the season.
Mines also got strong pitching from Alex Honeyman and Luke Parker as Honeyman (1-4) started the game and tossed four innings and allowed four hits and four runs (one earned run), while striking out two and walking none. Parker pitched four scoreless innings and allowed two hits, while striking out four and walking four.
The Pack jumped in front 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning on a 2-out solo home run over the fence in right field by Reginato. The homer was the first this season for Reginato.
In the bottom of the second, the Pack took advantage of two hits and two Mines errors to plate three unearned runs and take a 4-0 lead in the game off Honeyman. The big hit in the inning was a 2-run homer over the wall in left from Williams, who was 1-for-2 in the game with two walks. Williams' homer was his fifth this season.
Mines took advantage of two Pack errors and used three hits to plate two runs and cut the Pack lead to 4-2 in the top of the third. Ben Leiphart got the scoring started on an RBI double down the left field line and after Petersheim retired the next two Mines hitters in order, he appeared to have gotten out of the inning as Evan Bilter hit a fly ball to center, but Kelly dropped the ball for an error and that allowed Leiphart to score an unearned run.
Over the final six-plus innings, the teams combined for five hits and no runs.
For the game, the Pack stranded seven runners on base, while Mines left nine runners on base. Both teams turned a double play in the game.
The game also featured four stolen bases as Jackson Woolwine stole two bases for Mines, while Kelly and junior second baseman
Devean Alvarez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Chaffey College) each had a steal for the Pack.
CSU Pueblo, who has now won seven of its last eight games, will look to continue the hot play this coming weekend (April 11-13) as the Pack travels to Las Vegas, N.M., for a four-game RMAC series against New Mexico Highlands. The teams open the series with a single nine-inning game on Friday, April 11 at 2 p.m., before playing a doubleheader on Saturday, April 12 beginning at noon and the series will conclude on Sunday, April 13 with a single nine-inning game at noon.
