Baseball Rallies to Post 7-4 Win in Opener of Saturday's Home Doubleheader Against Adams State

UEBLO, Colo. - Colorado State University Pueblo opened its home Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader here Saturday afternoon with Adams State by rallying for a 7-4 victory over the Grizzlies at Rawlings Field.

With the win, the ThunderWolves improve to 27-17 overall and 17-9 in the league, while Adams State falls to 17-27 overall and 13-13 in the RMAC. The two teams concluded Saturday's doubleheader that began 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.

In Saturday's first game, the Pack outhit the Grizzlies, 11-2, as sophomore centerfielder Logan Kelly (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Capistrano Valley Christian) was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI, while senior second baseman Kade Snodgrass (Derby, Kan./Neosho County CC) and senior shortstop Rob Mansour (La Verne, Calif./Cuesta College) each had two hits and combined for two RBI's each.

Along with recording 11 hits, the Pack three pitchers were able to keep the Grizzlies bats in check as redshirt junior Jacob Petersheim (Broadway, Va./Broadway) struggled early on with his command as he walked five in five innings as he allowed two hits and four runs (two earned), while striking out seven to pick up the win and improve to 5-2 on the season. In addition to Petersheim, junior Jake Olguin-Pacheco (Denver, Colo./Horizon) tossed one inning and faced four batters and walked one, while sophomore Jack Novak (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Thunder Ridge) struck all three batters he faced in the seventh to earn his fourth save of the season.

The Grizzlies got on the scoreboard first as they used a walk, a wild pitch, ground out and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Josiah Hall to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Hall's RBI was his team-leading 47th of the season.

ASU would add two runs to its lead in the top of the second thanks to three walks issued by Petersheim and a throwing error at third base by sophomore Jason Arriola (Riverside, Calif./Norco) that allowed two unearned runs to score to give the Grizzlies a 3-0 lead.

The Pack used back-to-back doubles in the bottom of second by Arriola and Kelly to score its first run of the game to cut ASU's lead to 3-1 and later in the inning added an RBI single up the middle from Mansour to pull the Pack within 3-2.

In the bottom of the third, the Pack tied the game on a walk and stolen base by fifth-year senior first baseman Christian Castaneda (El Paso, Texas/Otero JC) and an RBI single up the middle by senior right fielder Elijah Borjas (Denver, Colo./Lakewood). Later in the inning, the Pack put runners on first and third thanks to an infield single by Kelly and Snodgrass gave the Pack a 4-3 lead on his RBI single to right and the lead grew to 5-3 on a balk by ASU starting hurler Logan Martin that allowed Kelly to score from third.

The Grizzlies opened the top of the fourth with a single by Jorden Rico, a double by Chris Gracia and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ethan Abegg to pull ASU within 5-4.

Kelly opened the sixth inning with a sun-aided triple to center and scored one batter later on an RBI single by Snodgrass to give the Pack a 6-4 lead and the Pack added another run later in the frame on an RBI single by Mansour.

Rico and Gracia each recorded a hit for the Grizzlies.

Martin (0-1) tossed all six innings for Adams State on the mound and allowed 11 hits and seven runs (six earned), while walking two and fanning five.

Both teams committed an error in the game and combined to leave nine runners on base. ASU left six on base and the Pack stranded three.

The Pack also stole five bases in the game to push their season total to 99. Snodgrass had two of the Pack's five steals in the game.
