Women's Lacrosse Outscored 7-0 in Fourth Period of Home Setback to Westminster

Loss Eliminated Pack from the 2025 RMAC Tournament

PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo saw its postseason hopes dashed here Thursday as the ThunderWolves were outscored 7-0 in the final period of its 18-7 home setback to Westminster University in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at ALG Stadium.

Entering Thursday's game, the Pack and Westminster were tied for fourth in the RMAC standings with identical 2-6 league records and two games remaining in the regular season. A win by the Pack on Thursday would've put them in the driver's seat for a spot in the RMAC Tournament, but a loss would eliminate them from postseason contention. Westminster now owns the tiebreaker over the Pack should the two teams finish the regular season tied, since Westminster swept both games this season.

With Thursday's setback, the Pack fell to 2-11 overall and 2-7 in the RMAC, while Westminster improved to 6-8 overall and 3-6 in the RMAC. Thursday's win helped Westminster lock up the fourth and final spot in next weekend's RMAC Tournament.

In Thursday's game, Westminster jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first period, before Pack outscored the Griffins, 7-6, in the middle two periods to pull within 11-7 heading into the final period.

The Pack was held scoreless in the final 15 minutes of play as they committed nine turnovers and took just four shots, while Westminster scored seven goals on 14 shots and committed just three turnovers in the period to post the win.

For the game, the Pack was out shot 52-18, including 39-10 in shots on goal, and they were out shot, 26-8, in the first and fourth periods and outscored, 12-0, in those two periods.

Freshman attacker Emily Doane (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) paced the Pack with three goals and added two assists for five points. In addition, Doane's three goals, sophomore attacker Clara Drinkwater (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) added two goals. The Pack's other goals came from sophomore midfielder Sophia Rinn (Eagle, Colo./Eagle Valley) and freshman attacker Moira Turpen (Newberg, Ore./Newberg). Turpen's goal was her 31st of the season, which puts her 11th on the school's single-season goal chart.

Westminster opened the game by scoring eight straight goals, including jumping out to a 5-0 lead after the opening 10 minutes of play. Following WU's 8-0 lead just a little under 25 minutes into the contest, the Pack closed the period with three straight goals to cut the Griffins' lead to 8-3 at the half.

The Pack's first goal came from Doane off an assist by freshman defender Kenzie Carpio (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart) with 3:52 left in the period. About two minutes later, Doane scored her second goal of the game off an assist by Turpen and about 76 seconds later, Doane scored her third straight goal off an assist by freshman midfielder Sydney Gunnels (Dallas, Texas/Coppell).

Westminster opened the third period with a free-position goal by Celia Fidanza to push its lead to 9-3 just a little under three minutes into the period. The Pack used a goal by Drinkwater that was assisted by Doane to pull with Pack within 9-4 with 9:44 left in the period.

After Jordan Williamson scored two straight goals in a span of nearly two minutes to give Westminster an 11-4 lead.

The Pack, though, began a comeback as about 27 seconds after Williamson's second goal, Drinkwater scored her second goal of the game off an assist by sophomore midfielder Reese Wasmund (Portland, Ore./West Linn) to pull the Pack within 11-5.

About three minutes later, Turpen scored her lone goal of the game off an assist by Doane to pull the Pack within 11-6 with 3:17 left in the period, and about 64 seconds later, Rinn scored her lone goal off an assist by Gunnels to cut WU's lead to 11-7.

In the fourth period, Lexi Segaline (4) and Wiliamson (2) combined to score six of Westminster's goals in the period to seal the victory.

Williamson and Segaline each scored five goals for the Griffins in the win, while Fidanza, Olivia Petrosky, and Shaina Shoughro each two goals in the win.

Doane took six of the Pack's 18 shots and four of its 10 shots on goal. Williamson paced WU with 14 shots, including 11 shots on goal.

The Griffins also won the ground ball battle, 26-17, as sophomore goalie Breonna Mason (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) collected six, while sophomore defender Dylan Retzloff (Bend, Ore./Mountain View) tied a career-high with four ground balls. Sixteen different Griffins picked up ground balls in the win.

Westminster was credited with 12 caused turnovers, including three by Marianna Dick and Riley Weldon. The Pack had seven caused turnovers as Retzloff and Gunnels had two each. While the Pack had 29 turnovers after committing nine in the final period, WU finished with 15 turnovers.

Mason, who was named this week's RMAC Defensive Player of the Week and the USA Lacrosse Division II Player of the Week, finished with 21 saves and allowed 18 goals, while also collecting six ground balls and committing one turnover. With her 21 saves, she pushed her season total to 188 and is now 12 saves shy of becoming just the second RMAC player in league history to record 200 saves in a season. Mason leads the RMAC in both saves (188) and saves per game (14.46).

Gabriella Cheminan played all 60 minutes in goal for Westminster as she finished with three saves and one ground ball.

The Pack will close out the 2025 season with a 2 p.m. game on Saturday, April 19, against Colorado Mesa. Before the game, the Pack will recognize its two seniors – Rinn and goalie Naomi Price-Burton (Aurora, Colo./Grandview).
