DURANGO, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo women's lacrosse concluded its five-game road trip here Saturday afternoon by posting a 16-15 overtime win over Fort Lewis in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at Ray Dennison Memorial Field. The overtime game was the first in the program's 10-year history.
With the win, the ThunderWolves snapped a six-game losing streak and kept its postseason hopes alive as they improved to 2-10 overall and 2-6 in the RMAC, while Fort Lewis fell to 1-13 overall and 0-8 in the RMAC.
The four teams in the final RMAC standings earn a spot in the RMAC Tournament and the Pack is currently a half-game behind Westminster, who is 2-5 in the league. Westminster hosts UCCS on Sunday and plays the Pack on Thursday in Pueblo.
In Saturday's game, the Pack led 10-8 heading into the final period in regulation, but the Skyhawks outscored the Pack, 7-5, in the period, including getting a man-up goal from Rilee Powless with 1:17 left in the regulation to tie the game at 15-all.
Following Powless' goal, freshman attacker
Moira Turpen (Newberg, Ore./Newberg) put a shot on goal with 18 seconds left, but FLC goalie Caley Lay saved the ball from going into the net to send the game into overtime.
In the overtime session, the Skyhawks won the draw, but Phoebe Ramirez committed a turnover that was caused by sophomore midfielder
Reese Wasmund (Portland, Ore./West Linn), and about 47 seconds after the Pack's clear attempt was successful, Turpen fired a shot at the cage and the shot went into the net to seal the Pack's 16-15 win. The goal was her career-high fifth of the game for Turpen and team-leading 30th of the season. Turpen has now scored three or more goals in six of the Pack's 12 games.
Turpen's 30 goals are tied for 11th on the school's single-season chart with current Pack head coach
Taylor Ward, who scored 30 goals during the 2018 season.
In addition to Turpen's five goals, Wasmund also tallied a career-high five goals and added an assist in the win. Wasmund is now tied for third on the team in goals this season with 15. Freshman attacker
Emily Doane (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) had three goals and two assists, while sophomore attacker
Clara Drinkwater (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) added two goals in the victory.
Fort Lewis jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening five minutes of the game, before the Pack used goals by Turpen and Wasmund to tie the game at 2-2 with a little over three minutes left in the opening period.
Powless gave FLC a 3-2 lead with 54 seconds left in the period before Doane scored an unassisted goal with 40 seconds left in the period to knot the game at 4-4 heading to the second period.
The Pack took a 4-3 lead following a goal by Wasmund that was assisted by Doane with 12:11 left in the second period. Following Wasmund's goal, the Skyhawks used two straight goals to a 5-4 lead, before Drinkwater scored on a free position shot with 3:52 left to retie the game. FLC, though, took a 6-5 lead at the half thanks to an unassisted goal by Ramirez with 1:40 left in the period.
Trailing 6-5 at the half, the Pack opened the third period with unassisted goals by Drinkwater, Turpen, and Wasmund to take an 8-6 lead just a little over three minutes into the period. After Maddie Thompson scored a man-up goal for FLC to cut the Pack's lead to 8-7, the Pack responded with a man-up goal by Turpen with 5:50 left and a free position goal by Wasmund with 3:55 left in the period to push in front 10-7.
The Skyhawks would answer back with a free position goal by Ava Postal to cut the Pack lead to 10-8 heading into the final period. FLC then opened the final period with goals by Maddie Thompson and Ramirez to tie the game at 10-all with 13:18 left in regulation.
Sophomore midfielder
Sophia Rinn (Eagle, Colo./Eagle Valley) gave the Pack an 11-10 lead on her unassisted goal with 11:48 left before FLC retied the game nearly 90 seconds later on an unassisted goal by Diamond Velasco.
Following Velasco's goal, Turpen scored her fourth goal off the game off an assist by Doane to give the Pack a 12-11 lead with 8:42 left in the regulation. The lead was short-lived as FLC scored two straight goals to take a 13-12 lead with 6:08 left in regulation.
The Pack responded with three straight goals, including two from Doane and the other from Wasmund, to take a 15-13 lead with 2:31 remaining. FLC, though, came right back as they used a goal by Piper Price with 2:21 left to pull within 15-14 and then tied the game on Powless' goal with 1:17 remaining in regulation.
For the game, the Pack was out shot on the day, 44-32 as Turpen took nine shots, while Doane and Wasmund each had seven shots. Velasco took 12 shots to pace Fort Lewis.
The Pack trailed in ground balls 26-25 and Fort Lewis held a 24-11 edge in draw controls. Sophomore goalie
Breonna Mason (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) paced the Pack with six ground balls, while Turpen had five and Doane earned four of the Pack's 11 draws. Samantha Rodgers (6) and Thompson combined for 11 draws for FLC. Rodgers also had seven ground balls.
In addition, the Pack was 29-for-35 on clears and was credited with three caused turnovers, while FLC was 22-for-29 on clears and had 12 caused turnovers.
Mason (2-10) played the entire game in the cage for the Pack as she tied her school record of 23 saves and also added six ground balls while allowing 15 goals.
Lay played the entire game in the cage for Fort Lewis and finished with 13 saves, a ground ball, and allowed 16 goals.
The Pack will return home to ALG Stadium to close out the regular season next week with home games on Thursday, April 17, at 6 p.m. against Westminster before hosting Colorado Mesa for a 2 p.m. Senior Day game on Saturday, April 19.
