Baseball Wins Fourth Straight, Opens New Mexico Highlands Doubleheader With 20-6 Win

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – Colorado State University Pueblo pushed its win streak to four straight games here Saturday afternoon as the ThunderWolves opened Saturday's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader here with New Mexico Highlands by posting a 20-6 come-from-behind win over the Cowboys at Brandt Baseball Field.

With the win, the Pack improved to 22-14 overall and 12-6 in the RMAC, while New Mexico Highlands fell to 9-25 overall and 1-17 in the league. The two teams will conclude Saturday's doubleheader with another seven-inning game that began 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.

In Saturday's opener, the Pack trailed 4-0 after two innings, before rallying to score 20 straight runs from the third to the seventh inning, including scoring eight runs in the sixth inning to win its fourth straight game and ninth in its last 10 games.

The Pack finished with 20 hits in the opener as all nine starters in the game recorded at least one hit with sophomore designated hitter Noah Williams (Carson, Calif./Redondo Union) going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and five RBI, including a three-run homer in the fourth to give the Pack a 6-4 lead. In addition to Williams, fifth-year senior first baseman Christian Castaneda (El Paso, Texas/Otero JC) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

For the game, the Pack hit seven extra base hits as they had five doubles and Williams' two home runs.

Senior left fielder Wyatt Reginato (Cottonwood, Calif./Folsom Lake), senior third baseman Joseph Quintana (Golden, Colo./Erskine) and senior shortstop Rob Mansour (La Verne, Calif./Cuesta College) each had two hits and combined for 5 RBI and seven runs scored, including Mansour scoring three times. Senior right fielder Elijah Borjas (Denver, Colo./Lakewood) scored three runs in the win.

The Cowboys jumped on junior hurler Luke Ruby (Fort Collins, Colo./Resurrection Christian) in the bottom of the first as they plated two runs on three hits to take a 2-0 lead in the game. The big hit in the inning was a 2-run double by Carlos Chavez.

NMHU added two more runs in the bottom of the second thanks to a hit, an error, and a sacrifice fly by Gael Bernal to take a 4-0 lead in the game.

The Pack, though, rallied in the top of the third inning as they used four hits, a Cowboys error, and two stolen bases, including a stolen base of home by senior Reginato to plate three runs and pull within 4-3. In addition to Reginato's steal of home, the Pack's other two runs scored on back-to-back RBI singles by Reginato and Castaneda.

In the top of the fourth, the Pack took the lead thanks to a one-out, 3-run homer by Williams.

The Pack pushed its lead to 9-4 in the top of the fifth as they used two hits and a Cowboys error to plate three runs. The big hit in the inning was a 2-run double by Quintana that plated both sophomore center fielder Logan Kelly (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Capistrano Valley Christian) and Borjas.

CSU Pueblo broke the game open in the sixth as they sent 11 hitters to the plate and plated eight runs on seven hits and two errors. Reginato got the scoring started on an RBI single, two batters later, Kelly hit an RBI single to give the Pack an 11-4 lead. After an error by NMHU allowed the 12th run to score, senior catcher Brady Ingalls (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) followed with a 2 RBI double, Mansour followed with an RBI double, and Williams capped the scoring with a 2-run homer. The homer was his second of the game and pushed into a tie for the team lead with seven.

The Pack used four hits to plate three runs in the top of the seventh to push its lead to 20-4. In the inning, junior center fielder Jeremiah Sanchez (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo West) drove home two runs with his 2-run double and Ingalls brought home the third run on a sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the seventh, NHMU used four hits and two runs off of senior reliever Kade Douglas (Lakewood, Colo./Hill College) to complete the scoring. Douglas replaced junior Cole Bloomer (Arapahoe, Colo./Lamar CC) to open the inning.

Bloomer (1-0) picked up the win in relief of Ruby as he tossed 3.1 inning shutout innings, and he didn't allow a hit and recorded two strikeouts in his 35-pitch outing. Ruby, who started the game, lasted 2.2 innings and allowed five hits and four runs (three earned), while striking out five and walking two.

Carlos Chavez paced Highlands with a 3-for-4 day at the plated with 3 RBI, while Bryant O'Neil was 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Cowboys.

Ramon Brion (2-4) took the loss for the Cowboys on the mound as he pitched four innings and allowed seven hits and six runs (three earned) while walking two and striking out four. The next pitchers for the Cowboys tossed the final three innings and allowed 13 hits and 14 runs (eight earned runs) while striking out four and walking three.

NHMU's defense committed five errors that led to nine unearned runs for the Pack, while CSU Pueblo committed one error.

The Pack left six runners on base and stole four bases, including two by Castaneda, while NMHU left five runners on base and did not record a stolen base.
