Women's Lacrosse Begins Five-Game Road Trip With RMAC Setback at Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo women's lacrosse opened a five-game road trip here Friday evening with a 17-2 setback to Colorado Mesa in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game at Community Hospital Unity Field.

With the loss, the ThunderWolves fall to 1-7 overall and 1-3 in the RMAC, while Colorado Mesa improves to 5-4 overall and 4-0 in the league. The Pack will continue the road trip with a 3 p.m. game on Sunday, March 30 in Salt Lake City, Utah, against Westminster.

The Pack and CMU were tied at 2-2 following a free position goal by sophomore midfielder Reese Wasmund (Portland, Ore./West Linn) with 3:34 left in the opening period. Following that goal, the Mavericks, who are the lone undefeated team in RMAC play this season, scored 15 unanswered goals as they scored four goals in both the second and third periods and tallied six goals in the final period. CMU led just 7-2 at the half.

In addition to Wasmund's goal, the Pack's other goal was scored by freshman attacker Moira Turpen (Newberg, Ore./Newberg). Turpen's goal was her team-leading 19th of the season.

CMU opened the scoring on a goal by Caroline Ohngemach just a little over two minutes into the contest before Turpen got the Pack on the scoreboard with a goal at 9:24 left in the period.

Courtney Havel gave CMU a 2-1 lead on her goal with 4:42 left in the period before Wasmund scored her goal with 3:34 left in the period to tie the game at 2-2. Havel would add her second goal of the opening period with 25 seconds left in the period to give CMU a 3-2 lead.

Ohngemach scored two goals, while Carson Dickey and Ali Bryant also scored goals in the second period to take a 7-2 halftime lead.

The Mavs added four more goals in the third period to hold an 11-2 lead heading into the final period. In the final period, CMU goals from five different players, including two goals by Mikki Brown, to set the final margin.

Havel paced the Mavs with four goals, while Ohngemach and Brown each had three goals in the game. The Mavs also had 10 assists Ohngemach recording four and Emme Rezoski having three assists.

After taking eight shots in the first period, the Pack were limited to nine shots the remainder of the game as CMU outshot the Pack, 48-17, including a 31-11 edge in shots on goal. Turpen,  Wasmund, and freshman attacker Emily Doane (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) combined to take 14 of the Pack's shots as Turpen took six, while Wasmund and Doane each took four shots.

CMU also held a 15-7 edge on draw controls as Doane collected four in the game, while Avery Irlbeck had eight for the Mavs.

The Pack collected 22 ground balls with Doane, freshman midfielder Sydney Gunnels (Dallas, Texas/Coppell), and sophomore goalie Breonna Mason (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) each had four on the night. CMU finished with 27 ground balls.

CMU also held an 11-4 edge in caused turnovers and the Pack was 1-for-3 on their free-position shot attempts. CMU was 3-for-10 on the night on free position shots.

Mason (1-7) played all 60 minutes in the cage and finished with 14 saves and four ground balls. Heather Hawkins (4-2) played all 60 minutes in the cage for CMU and finished with nine saves, three ground balls, and a caused turnover.
