SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Colorado State University Pueblo women's lacrosse continued its five-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference road trip here Sunday afternoon with a 20-9 setback to Westminster University at Dumke Field.
With the setback, the Pack fell to 1-8 overall and 1-4 in the RMAC, while Westminster improved to 5-5 overall and 2-3 in the league. Through the first half of the league schedule, the Pack sits in fifth place in the RMAC standings.
In Sunday's game, the Pack were outshot 42-21 but won the draw control battle, 18-14 against the Griffins.
The Pack were outscored 15-6 in the first half but scored three of the eight goals in the second half in falling to 0-4 on the road this season and 0-2 on the road in RMAC play.
Sophomore midfielder
Sophia Rinn (Eagle, Colo./Eagle Valley) and freshman attacker
Moira Turpen (Newberg, Ore./Newberg) each recorded hat tricks for the Pack, while freshman attacker
Emily Doane (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro), freshman midfielder
Sydney Gunnels (Dallas, Texas/Coppell) and sophomore midfielder
Reese Wasmund (Portland, Ore./West Linn) each tallied a goal in Sunday's game.
Turpen has now scored at least three goals in five of the Pack's nine goals, while Rinn has now had two games with at least three goals.
Westminster jumped out to a 2-0 lead just five minutes into the game before Doane gave the Pack its first goal at 9:09 left in the first period to cut WU's 2-1 lead. The Griffins then reeled off three straight goals to take a 5-1 lead with 5:15 left in the opening period.
Turpen scored her goal of the game off an assist by Doane with 4:08 left in the period to cut the deficit to 5-2. The Griffins would close the period by scoring four straight goals to take a 9-1 lead after the first 15 minutes of the contest.
The Pack would open the second period by scoring four consecutive goals to pull within 9-6. Rinn got the scoring started on a goal just three-plus minutes into the period, while Gunnels scored her first goal off an assist by Rinn with 10:36 left in the period. Turpen and Rinn would score goals with 47 seconds of each other to pull the Pack within 9-6 with 9:04 left in the period.
Westminster, though, closed the second period by scoring the final six goals to take a 15-6 halftime lead.
The Griffins opened the third period by scoring three straight goals to push its lead to 18-6 before Rinn stopped the run with a goal assisted by Gunnels with 3:35 left to cut the Griffins lead to 18-7 heading into the fourth period.
Wasmund started the scoring in the fourth period as she took a pass from freshman defender
Kenzie Carpio (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart) and scored her ninth goal of the season with 11:44 left in the final period.
After Holly Shoughro scored two straight goals to push Westminster's lead to 20-8, Turpen capped the scoring with an unassisted goal with 1:22 left in the game.
Along with Rinn's three goals, she added an assist for four points, while Gunnels tallied three points thanks to two assists and a goal.
Turpen led the Pack with six shots, including three shots on goal, while Rinn took four shots and had four shots on goal.
Wasmund paced the Pack with seven draw controls, while Turpen added five. Grace Szwedko earned six draws for the Griffins.
Westminster got a game-high five goals from Jordan Williamson, while Shaina Shoughro, Olivia Petrosky, Anabelle Kugler each had three goals. For the game, the Griffins got goals from eight different players. Westminster also had 13 assists in the game as Celia Fidanza had five assists.
The Griffins also held a slight 32-25 edge in ground balls, as Wasmund, Doane, and Gunnels each had four ground balls. Ava Deakins had five ground balls, while Marianna Dick and Riley Weldon each had four.
Westminster also held a 16-5 edge in caused turnovers with Gunnels recording two of those five caused turnovers for the Pack.
Sophomore
Breonna Mason (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) played all 60 minutes in the cage and recorded 10 saves and allowed 20 goals and had one ground ball.
Gabriella Cheminan (5-5) played the first half in goal for the Griffins as she allowed six goals and made three saves, while Kaelyn Hart played the second half and finished with three saves and three goals allowed.
The Pack will open the second half of RMAC play next weekend as they travel to UCCS for a 4 p.m. game on Friday, April 4, before playing on Sunday, April 6 in Denver, Colo., against Regis at noon. The Pack fell 21-8 at home earlier this season to the Mountain Lions and fell 18-3 at home to Regis.
