PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo women's lacrosse concluded its season-long five game home stand here Sunday afternoon as the ThunderWolves fell 21-8 to UCCS in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference at ALG Stadium.
With the setback, the Pack falls to 1-6 overall and 1-2 in the RMAC, while UCCS improved to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the RMAC. The Pack concluded the home stand with a 1-4 record.
In Sunday's game, the Pack were outshot, 42-19 and lost the draw control battle, 21-11, including 15-5 in the first half as the Mountain Lions scored 14 first half goals, including outscoring the Pack, 8-1, in the second period.
Freshman midfielder
Sydney Gunnels (Dallas, Texas/Coppell) paced the Pack offense with a career-high tying four goals, while freshman attacker
Moira Turpen (Newberg, Ore./Newberg) scored three goals and has now tallied three or more goals in four of the Pack's first seven games.
UCCS jumped in front 2-0 just five-plus minutes into the opening period, before Turpen scored the Pack's first goal off an assist from freshman attacker
Emily Doane (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) with 6:08 left in the period.
After Sarah Urbanic gave UCCS a 3-1 lead, Gunnels scored on a free position shot to pull with the Pack within 3-2 with 4:20 left in the opening period. Gunnels would add another free position goal with 2:59 left in the period to drop UCCS' lead to 4-3.
The Mountain Lions, though, closed the opening period with back-to-back goals by Emma Grace Martin to take a 6-3 lead.
UCCS then opened the second period by scoring six straight goals to take a 12-3 lead with 6:19 left in the period.
Gunnels added her third goal of the game off an assist by sophomore midfielder
Reese Wasmund (Portland, Ore./West Linn) with 4:16 left in the period to cut UCCS' lead to 12-4. Urbanic and Sofia Watts scored goals to close the first half to give UCCS a 14-4 halftime lead.
In the third period, UCCS scored the first three goals of the period to take a 17-4 lead, before Gunnels added a free position goal with 6:58 left in the period to cut the deficit to 17-5. Watts, though, scored on a free position goal for the Mountain Lions with 2:56 left in the period to give UCCS an 18-5 lead heading into the final period.
Both teams would score three goals in the fourth period as Turpen scored two of the Pack's three goals, while freshman defender
Kenzie Carpio (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart) added the other goal for the Pack.
UCCS got seven goals from Watts, while Urbanic added four goals and two assists. Martin, Sydnee-Anne Moeller and Peyton Ross each scored two goals in the win. For the game, nine UCCS players scored goals in the game.
Turpen and Gunnels each took six shots for the Pack and combined for eight shots on goal. Watts and Moeller and Urbanic combined for 19 shots for the Mountain Lions.
UCCS held a 13-10 edge on ground balls as sophomore goalie
Breonna Mason (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) had four, while Turpen added three. Turpen and sophomore attacker
Leeah Carmine (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly) each had three draws for the Pack.
Moeller had five ground balls and Jade Wilson collected 12 draws in the win.
The Pack were credited with six caused turnovers, while UCCS had five.
Mason (1-6) played nearly 48 minutes in the cage and allowed 19 goals and made 13 saves. Senior
Naomi Price-Burton (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) played the final 12-plus minutes and recorded a save, a ground ball and allowed two goals.
UCCS played three goalies in the game as Jordyn Nunez played 42-plus minutes and allowed five goals, had three saves and picked up two ground balls.
The Pack will now embark on five-game road trip as they begin the stretch of road contests next weekend with a 7 p.m. RMAC game on Friday, March 28 at Colorado Mesa and a 3 p.m. RMAC game on Sunday, March 30 at Westminster.
