PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado State University-Pueblo women's lacrosse continued its season-long five-game home stand here Friday evening with an 18-3 setback to 17th-ranked Regis University in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at ALG Stadium.
With the setback, the ThunderWolves fell to 1-5 overall and 1-1 in the RMAC, while Regis improved to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the league. The Pack are in fourth place in the league standings heading into Sunday's 1 p.m. home contest against UCCS.
In Friday's game, the Pack scored the game's first goal just 33 seconds into the contest as freshman attacker
Moira Turpen (Newberg, Ore./Newbery) found the cage after she won the opening draw of the game.
The lead was the Pack's first against Regis since scoring the game's first goal at home on April 20, 2021. The Pack would go on to lose that game, 21-4.
Following Turpen's team-leading 15th goal of the season, Regis scored nine straight goals, including capping the first period by scoring eight unanswered goals to lead 8-1 after the opening 15 minutes.
After Regis opened the second period with a goal by Justine Spahr to take a 9-1 lead, the Pack scored its second goal of the game as freshman attacker
Emily Doane (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) scored a goal off an assist by Turpen to cut the deficit to 9-2 with 11:24 left in the period.
The Rangers, who are now 19-0 all-time against the Pack, closed the period by scoring three straight goals to take a 12-2 lead at the half.
With the clock running in the second half due to Regis' 10-goal lead, the Rangers scored two goals in the third period to take a 14-2 lead into the final period.
Regis opened the final period with back-to-back goals to push its lead to 16-2 with 9:45 left in the period, but the Pack would once again find the back of the cage with 5:09 left in the period thanks to a goal by sophomore attacker
Clara Drinkwater (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) that was assisted by freshman midfielder
Sydney Gunnels (Dallas, Texas/Coppell). The Rangers, though, capped the scoring with a free position goal with 2:43 left and an unassisted goal by Aubrey Benton with 22 seconds remaining.
Regis' 18 goals came from 11 different players as Benton and Shea Murphy each had three goals, while Spahr, Valdez, and Becky Goetsch each tallied two goals.
The Pack were outshot (30-12) for the game, including 30-12 in shots on goal and Regis held a 32-20 edge in ground balls freshman defender
Kenzie Carpio (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart) and junior defender
Audrey Allendorf (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) each had three. Madeline Schallmoser had a game-high seven for the Rangers.
Regis also won the battle of the draw (13-9) as Gunnels had four draws, while Turpen and Allendorf each got two. Megan Bunker and Alyse Valdez each had five for the Rangers.
Regis was 3-for-4 on free position shots, while CSU Pueblo was 0-for-2 on free position shots. The Rangers also held a 13-9 advantage in caused turnovers as the Doane paced the Pack with three, while Spahr had five for Regis. For the game, the two teams combined for 41 turnovers (23 for the Pack, 18 for Regis).
Sophomore
Breonna Mason (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) played all 60 minutes in goal and finished with six saves, a ground ball, and a caused turnover.
Brigit Goetsch (3-4) played the first half in goal for the Rangers, and recorded one save, and allowed two goals while causing a turnover and picking up two ground balls.
