Gunnels Scores Three Goals in Women's Lacrosse's Home Opener Against Davenport

PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo women's lacrosse opened the home portion of its 2025 schedule Thursday afternoon as the ThunderWolves fell 21-6 to Davenport University in a non-conference game at the ALG Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium.

With the setback, the Pack falls to 0-3 on the season, while Davenport improves to 1-2.

Freshman midfielder Sydney Gunnels (Dallas, Texas/Coppell) recorded a hat track in the first half as she scored three of the Pack's four first half goals. The three goals pushed Gunnels' total to five, which is second-most on the team. Freshman attacker Moira Turpen (Newberg, Ore./Newberg) added her team-leading ninth goal of the season just three minutes into the fourth period to drop Davenport's lead to 15-7.

The Pack's other goals were scored by sophomore midfielder Sophia Rinn (Eagle, Colo./Eagle Valley) and freshman defender scored her first career goal Kenzie Carpio (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart) just seven-plus minutes into the second period. Carpio's goal came after Davenport opened the game by scoring the first nine goals.

Davenport opened the scoring by tallying six unanswered goals in the first period to a take a 6-0 lead. The Panthers then opened the second period by scoring three consecutive goals to take a 9-0 lead, before Carpio's goal stopped the Panthers run.

Gunnels scored the next two goals of the game on free position shots to drop the Panthers' lead to 9-3 with 4:38 left in the second period. After goals by Maddy Haynes and Alyssa Bird gave DU an 11-3 lead, Gunnels capped the first half scoring with another free position goal with 2:32 left in the second period to cut DU's lead to 11-4 at the half.

The Panthers put the game out of reach in the third period as they scored six straight goals to lead 17-4 heading into the final period. Turpen opened the scoring in the fourth period on a goal assisted by sophomore attacker Clara Drinkwater (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown), before DU scored four straight goals to push its lead to 21-5 with 1:22 left in the game.

Rinn's goal that was assisted by Drinkwater with 15 seconds left capped the scoring in the game.

Davenport got three goals each from Haynes, Gabby Basha, and Mika Kulynych, while Bird, Theadora Krueger, Blakely Malpass and Addison Roe each had two goals in the win.

The Pack were outshot, 34-10 and lost the ground ball battle, 20-9, to the Panthers. Gunnels took three of the Pack's 10 shots, while Gunnels and sophomore goalie Breonna Mason (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) each had two ground balls.

Davenport also won the draw control battle, 16-14, as Turpen led the way for the Pack with six draws, while sophomore midfielder Reese Wasmund (Portland, Ore./West Linn) added five draws. Jade Remacle led DU with four draws.

The Pack also had 20 turnovers in the game and were credited with five caused turnovers with Gunnels and Mason each recording two. DU had nine caused turnovers and committed 13 turnovers in the win.

Mason (0-3) took the loss in the cage for the Pack as she played nearly 47 minutes and allowed 17 goals and had five saves. Senior Naomi Price-Burton (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) played a little over 13 minutes in the cage and recorded two saves and allowed four goals.

Zoe Cassell (1-2) played nearly 50 minutes in goal for Davenport and finished with one save and allowed five goals, while Rachel Livak played the final 10-plus minutes in the cage and allowed one goal. The Pack only had seven shots on goal, while Davenport tallied 28 shots on goal.

The Pack will look to pick up its first win of the season on Sunday, March 2 as they host Ashland (Ohio) University for a 1 p.m. game at ALG Stadium.
