LIBERTY, Mo. - Colorado State University Pueblo women's lacrosse concluded its two-game season opening road trip here Monday morning with a 16-8 setback to William Jewell College at the WJC Soccer/Lacrosse Field.
With the setback, the ThunderWolves open the season with an 0-2 record, while William Jewell improves to 4-2 on the season. The Pack opened the season with a 19-7 loss Sunday at Missouri Western State University.
For the second straight game, freshman attacker
Moira Turpen (Newberg, Ore./Newberg) paced the Pack offense with four goals on nine shots, including seven shots on goal. It marks the second straight game with four goals for Turpen as she also tallied four goals in Sunday's season opener.
In addition to Turpen, sophomore attacker
Clara Drinkwater (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) added two goals and an assist for three points. The Pack's other goals came from freshman attacker
Emily Doane (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) and freshman midfielder
Sydney Gunnels (Dallas, Texas/Coppell).
WJC scored the first six goals of the game, before Turpen scored on a free position shot to give the Pack its first goal of the game with 2:08 left in the opening period.
The Pack opened the second period on a goal by Doane that was assisted by Drinkwater to drop WJC's lead to 6-2 just 100 seconds into the period.
After Olivia Fornelli gave the Cardinals a 7-2 lead on her second goal of the game with 12:33 left in the period, the Pack used back-to-back goals from Drinkwater that were assisted by sophomore midfielder
Reese Wasmund (Portland, Ore./West Linn) and Gunnels respectively to pull the Pack within 7-4 with 7:11 left in the period.
WJC capped the scoring in the first half on an unassisted goal by Kaylee Gross to give the Cardinals an 8-4 halftime lead.
The Cardinals put the game away in the third period as they scored five straight goals to push its lead 13-4. The Pack would stop the Cardinakls' goal flurry with a goal by Turpen that was assisted by Wasmund with one second left in the period. Turpen's goal cut WJC's lead to 13-5 heading into the final period.
Turpen and Gunnels opened the scoring in the fourth period with back-to-back free position goals to cut WJC's lead to 13-7.
After a goal by Elle Eastwood gave WJC a 14-7 lead, Turpen added her fourth goal of the game off an assist by Doane to cut the home team's lead to 14-8, before the Cardinals capped the scoring with two more goals to push its lead to 16-8.
Fornelli paced WJC with five goals, while Eastwood added four goals. Gross and Ella Childress each had two goals in the win.
The Pack were outshot, 35-25 with Turpen collecting nine shots and Drinkwater adding six shots, while WJC held a 27-26 edge on ground balls as sophomore goalie
Breonna Mason (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) led the way with seven ground balls.
WJC was strong on the draw in Monday's game as they held a 20-7 edge in the draw.
The Pack defense was credited with 19 caused turnovers as Turpen, Wasmund and junior attacker
Audrey Allendorf (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) each had three in the game. WJC had 16 caused turnovers.
The Pack was 3-for-6 on free position shots, while WJC was 0-for-2 on its free position chances.
Mason played all 60 minutes in the cage and recorded 15 saves, to go along with her seven ground balls and a caused turnover.
Claire Eastwood played all 60 minutes in the cage to WJC and finished with nine saves and four ground balls.
The Pack will next be in action on Thursday, Feb. 27 as they open the home portion of its 2025 schedule with a 1 p.m. game at Art and Lorraine Gonzales Stadium against Davenport.
