ALAMOSA, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo women's basketball closed out the road portion of its 2024-25 schedule here Saturday afternoon as the ThunderWolves suffered an 84-54 loss to Adams State in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at Plachy Hall.
With the setback, the Pack fell to 16-10 overall and 11-7 in the RMAC standings, while Adams State improved to 17-10 overall and 12-6 in the RMAC. The Pack finished the regular season with a 6-7 road record, including a 6-4 mark in road RMAC play.
Saturday's game was a battle between the two teams tied for fourth place in the league standings, but ASU's win moved them into sole possession for fourth place in the league, while the Pack fell into a tie with UCCS, who picked up a 75-72 win Saturday at New Mexico Highlands.
The top eight teams at the conclusion of the regular season earn spots in the RMAC Tournament with quarterfinal games scheduled for Tuesday, March 4.
Senior guard
Tosjanae Bonds (Denver, Colo./MSU Denver) paced the Pack in scoring with as season-high 19 points, while redshirt senior forward
Alisha Little (Aurora, Colo./University of Northern Colorado) added 17 points and 10 rebounds for her 11th straight double-double and NCAA leading 22nd double-double of the season. With her 17 points, Little pushed her career scoring total to 2,557 points and is now 183 points shy of Becky Hammon's all-time state scoring mark of 2,740 points.
It marked the first time since the league opener at Westminster on Dec. 5 that Little did not lead the Pack in scoring as in that game, senior guard
Tomia Johnson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Florida Gulf Coast) led the Pack with 20 points in a 59-58 win over the Griffins.
The Pack struggled with poor shooting and turnovers in Saturday's game as they finished the contest shooting 31.1 percent (19-for-61) from the field and was 8-for-29 (27.6 percent) from the three-point line and committed 18 turnovers that led to 22 points for the Grizzlies.
Adams State, who has now won three straight games, outscored the Pack, 52-28, in the second half after holding 32-26 lead at the half. The Grizzlies scored 32 of those 52 points in the fourth period as they led 52-36 after three periods of play.
Meanwhile, ASU finished the game shooting 50.8 percent (31-for-61) from the field and 36 percent (9-for-25) from the 3-point line, including shooting 66.7 percent from the field and 55 percent from the 3-point line in the second half.
The two teams were cold early on the they combined to make four of their 16 shots as the Pack held a 5-4 lead just five minutes into the contest with all five points coming from senior guard
Landri Hudson (Aurora, Colo./University of Wyoming). ASU, though, would make six of its final 10 shots in the period to take an 18-12 lead after the opening period. The Pack would go 4-for-15 from the field and 2-for-5 from the 3-point line in the opening 10 minutes of action.
The Pack opened the second period with a 9-3 run to take a 23-21 lead, before the Grizzlies used an 11-0 run to take a 32-23 lead, before Bonds drilled a trey with 3.9 seconds left to cut ASU's lead to 32-26 at halftime. Little and Bonds combined for 17 of the Pack's 26 first half points.
ASU opened the third period by scoring six straight points to take a 38-26 just four-plus minutes into the period. The Pack would score three straight points on two free throws by Little and a free throw by Johnson to pull within 38-29, but the Grizzlies responded by closing the half on a 14-7 run to take a 52-36 lead heading into the final period.
The Grizzlies opened the fourth period by scoring the first eight points of the period to push its lead to 60-36 with 7:53 left in the period. The Pack got its first points of the period on a trey from Bonds with 7:29 left and added another trey by Little with 6:39 left in the game to pull within 62-42.
From the point, ASU scored 24 of the final 36 points to cap the scoring and earn the 30 point victory.
Anitielu paced the Grizziles with 28 points, while Brooke Rodgers added 16 points and Ri'Ahana Davis had 14 points and eight rebounds. The fourth double-digit scorer was Taejhuan Hill, who finished with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.
ASU held a 40-33 edge on the boards, but the Pack held a 10-8 edge on the offensive boards as both teams collected 12 second change points.
While the Pack had 18 turnovers, ASU finished with 13 turnovers as the Pack collected eight steals and two blocked shots. ASU had 10 steals and four blocks.
Both teams were strong at the free throw line as the Pack went 8-for-11 (72.7 percent) at the line, while ASU was 13-for-16 (81.3 percent) from the charity stripe.
The Pack will return to action next Thursday, Feb. 27 as they host MSU Denver for a 5:30 p.m. RMAC contest at Massari Arena and then will conclude the regular season with a 4 p.m. Senior Day game on Saturday, March 1 against Colorado School of Mines.
