BILLINGS, Mont. – The Colorado State University Pueblo women's basketball suffered its first setback of the season here Saturday evening as the ThunderWolves fell 64-63 to MSU Billings on the second day of the D2CCA Tipoff Classic at the Trailhead held at Allerowitz Gymnasium on the MSU Billings campus.
With the setback, the Pack falls to 1-1 on the season, while MSU Billings collects its first win of the season after falling 81-71 in its season opener Friday to the University of Mary. The Pack will conclude the three-day season-opening event with a 3:30 p.m. game on Sunday against Mary.
After trailing 22-8 after the opening 10 minutes of play, the Pack outscored the Yellow Jackets 40-25 over the next two quarters to lead 48-47 heading into the final period. In the fourth period, the MSUB outscored the Pack, 17-15, including hitting two free throws with 15 seconds left to seal the win.
The two free throws by Kyla Momberg came after senior guard
Seneya Martinez (Windsor, Colo./Appalachian State) made one-of-two free throws with 32 seconds left to give the Pack a 63-62 lead.
Following Momberg's two free throws, the Pack pushed the ball up the court, but a shot in the paint with three seconds left from senior guard
Genesis Sweetwine (Aurora, Colo./Northeastern JC) was short to seal MSUB's win.
One night after scoring a career-high 22 points, Sweetwine paced the Pack offense with a game-high 17 points, while Martinez, who opened her Pack career with 25 points in Friday's season opener against Nebraska-Kearney, added 15 points. Junior forward
Dasani Nesbit (Billings, Mont./Gillette College), who was playing in her hometown, tallied nine points.
The Pack's comeback in the middle two quarters was keyed by defense as they forced the Yellow Jackets into 13 turnovers that led to 15 points and held them to a combined 7-for-27 (25.9 percent) shooting from the field. Meanwhile, the Pack shot 47.1 percent (16-for-34) from the field and was 5-for-11 from the 3-point line in the second and third quarters.
After watching MSUB shoot 62 percent from the field and 67 percent (4-for-6) from the 3-point line in the first quarter, the Yellow Jackets were just 14-for-40 (35 percent) from the field and 3-for-11 (27.3 percent) from long distance the remainder of the game.
The Pack, who trailed 22-8 after the first quarter, outscored the 'Jackets, 12-9, in the second quarter to pull within 31-20 at the half. The Pack closed the quarter scoring five of the final seven points.
In the first half, the Pack shot 25 percent from the field and was 0-for-6 from the 3-point line, while MSUB shot 37 percent from the field and 46 percent (5-for-11) from downtown. The Pack was 4-for-9 from the free throw line in the half, while MSUB was a perfect 6-for-6.
The Pack climbed back into the game in the third period as they scored 12 of the quarter's first 18 points to pull within 37-32 following a trey from Sweetwine with 5:51 left in the quarter. After Allison Kunze made two free throws to give the home team a 39-32 lead, the Pack used a 16-8 run keyed by three made treys and 1-of-2 free throws from junior guard
Wynter Jones (Dallas, Texas/Frisco Memorial) to give the Pack a 48-47 lead heading into the fourth period. That lead was the first of the game for the Pack. Sweetwine scored 11 of her points in the period.
MSUB retook the lead 45 seconds into the final period on a lay-up from Kaitlin Grossman, before the Pack used a 12-7 run over the next six-plus minutes to take a 60-56 lead. The run began with a 3-pointer from Nesbit and was capped by a trey from junior forward
Laci Roffle (Aurora, Colo./MSU Denver).
The 'Jackets, though, scored four straight points to tie the game at 60 with 1:26 remaining. Following two free throws by Jones to give the Pack a 62-60 lead with 1:08 left in the contest, MSUB tied the game on a basket from Cassie Chestnut with 46 seconds left.
Momberg paced MSUB with 16 points, while Chestnut added 13 points and nine rebounds, and Kunze chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds.
The Pack struggled from the free throw line in Saturday's game as they were just 8-for-17 (47.1 percent) from the line as MSUB was whistled for 20 fouls in the game. MSUB finished the game 13-for-14 from the foul line.
In addition, the Pack was outrebounded for the second straight game, 42-28 as Sweeney-Spitzeck led the Pack with six boards.
The Pack forced MSUB into 20 turnovers that led to 17 points, while they committed 13 turnovers that led to 12 points for the Yellow Jackets.
On the night, the Pack shot just 41.4 percent from the field and 38.9 percent (7-for-18) from the 3-point line, while MSUB shot 41.5 percent from the floor and 41.2 percent (7-for-17) from long distance.
MSUB held a 5-1 edge in blocked shots and a 14-13 advantage in assists.
The Pack led for just a little over eight minutes in the game that featured seven ties and four lead changes.
