Football Wins Second Straight RMAC Title With Double Overtime Senior Day Win Over No. 22 Chadron State

Honeycutt's 19-yard Walk-off Touchdown Reception in Double Overtime Seals 25th Straight RMAC Victory

PUEBLO, Colo. – In a battle for the 2025 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title here Saturday afternoon, fifth-ranked Colorado State University Pueblo and 22nd-ranked Chadron State needed double overtime to decide a champion as the ThunderWolves earned the 30-27 victory on a walk-off 19-yard touchdown catch from senior quarterback Roman Fuller (Decatur, Texas/University of Tulsa) to junior receiver Marcellus Honeycutt, Jr. (Denver, Colo./Eastern Washington) on Senior Day in the ThunderBowl.

With the victory, the Pack (10-1 overall, 9-0 RMAC) recorded its second straight undefeated season in RMAC play to repeat as the RMAC Champion and earn the league's automatic bid in the NCAA Division II Playoffs that begin next weekend. The NCAA will unveil the 32-team playoff field on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 4 p.m. MT on the www.NCAA.com website.

Saturday's win extended the Pack's RMAC win streak to 25 consecutive games and its overall win streak to nine consecutive games. The 25-game conference win streak is the longest active conference win streak in Division, while the nine-game win streak is tied for the fourth-longest active streak in Division II.

RMAC Trophy CelebrationThe RMAC title is the 10th in program history and the Pack's first repeat title since winning three consecutive championships from 2011-14. In addition, it also marked the second straight and ninth 10-win season in program history.

"I am just so proud of these guys. These seniors mean so much to me and so much to this program to be able to get their faces on the wall means the world to me because they deserve it and have earned that right," CSU Pueblo head coach Philip Vigil said following the win. "A lot of the success we've had at this place is because of the seniors from this year. Their resolve, their grit, and they just never quit. We've got to stop doing what we've been doing lately, but I'm just so proud of this group as they always find a way to get it done."

Saturday's game marked the Pack's second straight overtime game as they earned a 41-34 comeback win in overtime last Saturday at Mines. In that game, the Pack trailed 28-6 with 4:07 left in the second quarter. In addition, it was the Pack's first double-overtime game since falling 57-49 at Grand Valley State on Sept. 9, 2023, and the program's third double-overtime game in school history.

In Saturday's regular season finale, the Pack once again trailed as they got behind 14-3 with 3:22 left in the second quarter and trailed 14-10 at the half. It was the third straight game that the Pack trailed at halftime.

Fuller's double overtime game-winning pass to Honeycutt, Jr., was his single-game school record 66th pass attempt and his single-game school record 40th completion. On the day, Fuller was 40-for-60 passing for a career-high 442 yards, and he had three touchdown passes to push his career total to 48. It was just the third 400-yard passing game in school history.

"Roman is unwavering in his confidence, and we're unwavering in our confidence in him. He just continues to make plays and the ball where only our guy can catch it," added Vigil. "We're not where we're at with No. 4."

On the day, the Pack offense ran a school record 109 plays as they finished the game with 541 yards of offense. In addition to the 442 yards passing, the Pack gained 99 yards rushing on 43 carries. The 109 plays are the most in a game this season by a Division II school.

Chadron State came into the game leading the RMAC in total defense (284.8 ypg), passing defense (157.5 ypg), and was third in scoring defense (19.7). In addition, they led the league in third-down defense at 29.3 percent, but the Pack was 12-for-21 on third down in the game, and those 12 third-down conversions also set a new school single-game record.

The Pack needed every bit of those 109 plays as Chadron State, who fell to 8-3 overall and 8-1 in the RMAC with the loss, tied the game at 17-all following a 57-yard field goal by Wilson Yee with 13:47 left in the fourth quarter.

Following Yee's field goal, the Pack appeared poised to retake the lead as they drove 73 yards in 14 plays, but Martinez was stuffed for a 1-yard loss at the goal line on a 4-and-1 play to turn the ball over on downs to CSC.

CSC's next possession would end with an interception by Peyton Shaw on a pass thrown by DJ Ralph to give the Pack the ball at its own 31-yard line with 4:43 left in regulation. The interception was Shaw's team-leading fifth of the season and the Pack's 17th on the year.

On Pack's ensuing drive, the Pack ran eight plays and gained just nine yards as Fuller was sacked on back-to-back plays to force the Pack the punt the ball.

After the Eagles could only muster six yards on three plays on its next possession, CSC was forced to punt, and on the punt play, Robinson muffed the punt, but Honeycutt, Jr. was nearby to recover the muffed punt to give the Pack the ball with 2:08 left in regulation.

On that final drive of regulation, the Pack drove the ball 55 yards in seven plays to CSC 29-yard line. The Eagles' defense, though, was able to intercept a pass from Fuller intended for Honeycutt, Jr., in the end zone to force overtime.

In the first overtime period, the Eagles won the toss and elected to play defense first. The Pack used eight plays and capped the drive with a 1-yard touchdown pass from Fuller to Retzlaff to give the Pack a 24-17 lead.

Retzlaff had quite the day catching the football as he caught a single-game school record 14 passes for 166 yards and hauled in two touchdown receptions to push his season total to 15 and his career total to 39, which is the most among active Division II players. The 14 receptions bettered the old school mark of 12 by John Trahan against Colorado Mesa in 1982.

On CSC's overtime possession, the Eagles got a 5-yard touchdown run from Jake Marschall to force a second overtime period.

In the second overtime, CSC took a 27-24 lead following a 40-yard field goal by Yee, to set up Honeycutt's walk-off touchdown score.

The Pack struck first in the game as junior kicker Jackson Smith (Centennial, Colo./Santa Barbara City College) connected on a 31-yard field goal with 2:40 left in the opening quarter. The field goal came about four-plus minutes after Smith misfired on a 32-yard field goal attempt on the Pack's second offensive possession.

CSC, though, answered right back on the ensuing kickoff as Chase Nelson scored on a 92-yard kickoff return to give the Eagles a 7-3 lead with 2:29 left in the opening quarter.

On the ensuing Pack possession, Cross fumbled the ball, and the Eagles recovered the ball at the Pack's 31-yard line. Four plays later, Yee missed a field goal from 52 yards following a delay of game penalty by the Eagles.

In the opening quarter, the Pack held a 153 to 8 yard edge in total offense, but CSC held a 7-3 advantage on the scoreboard.

The Pack had another scoring drive to open the second quarter as they drove 47 yards in 10 plays, but the drive stalled at the CSC 18-yard line and Smith missed on a 35-yard field goal. Entering Saturday's action, Smith led Division II in field goals per game (1.75) and was second in field goal percentage (93.3 percent) as he was 14-for-15 on the season. He went 1-for-4 against Chadron State.

The Eagles extended its lead to 14-3 with 3:32 left in the on a 3-yard touchdown run by Wyatt Sprague.

On the ensuing drive by the Pack, they drove 75 yards in nine plays and capped the drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Fuller to Retzlaff to cut CSC's lead to 14-10 at halftime.

The only scoring in the third quarter came by the Pack as Martinez, who finished with 73 yards rushing in the game, scored on a 1-yard run with 3:15 left in the quarter to cap a 13-play, 70-yard drive by the Pack.

On the CSC's ensuing drive, Yee's 42-yard field goal attempt with 1:05 left in the quarter was blocked by Mckaney, Jr., to keep the score in the Pack's favor.

CSC, though, would tie the game on Yee's 57-yard field goal on its fifth play of the fourth quarter.

In addition to Retzlaff, Rakowsky finished the game with a career-high 11 receptions for 118 yards, and those 11 receptions pushed Rakowsky into second place on the school's career receptions chart with 158. Additionally, Honeycutt, Jr., caught three passes for 81 yards.

While the Pack offense ran 109 plays for 541 yards, Chadron State finished the game with 242 yards on 60 plays as the Eagles rushed for 149 yards and passed for 99 yards.

Ralph finished the game 6-for-19 passing for 91 yards and gained 27 yards rushing for 118 yards of total offense. Marschall gained 66 yards rushing, while Tommy Thomas caught two passes for 50 yards.

The Pack lost the turnover battle, 2-1, and was just 5-for-9 in the red zone as they entered the game having converted on 47 of its 49 red zone chances this season. CSC was just 3-for-14 on third down and 2-for-2 in the red zone.

The Pack, who entered the game second in the RMAC sacks with 29 on the season, was held without one on Saturday, while CSC was credited with three sacks.

Junior linebacker Gary Seidenberger (Fredericksburg, Texas/Fredericksburg) paced the Pack defense with nine tackles, while Nagbe, Jr., and Cameron Smith each had six in the win.
