Sharman-Newell Breaks History; Leads Pack To A Successful Weekend In Boulder

BOULDER, Colo. - The Colorado State University Pueblo Track and Field saw history being broken on Saturday Afternoon on the campus of Colorado University from Reece Sharman-Newell (Hampshire, England), as the Englishman became the first college athlete to run a Sub-Four Minute Mile on Colorado Soil.

Sharman-Newell ran a time of 3:59.37 is the fastest mile time on Colorado soil in an official race. Joining Sharman-Newell with a sub-four minute mile was Isaiah Givens from Colorado University. Those marks will also earn altitude conversions of 3:53.

Head Coach Matt Morris said, "People might not realize how big this is. This is huge! This is history. There has never been a sub-four mile in the State of Colorado, and the fact that three guys did it is incredible. Glad our guy was the one who ran the fastest."

Sharman-Newell is no stranger to breaking records. The 8x All-American was the fastest college athlete for a freshman in 2022, and was most recently racing for his country (Great Britain) last summer in the Olympic Trials.

The 3:59.37 is also the fastest time in Division II this season, breaking the current time of 4:00.30 from Titouan Le Grix of Wingate University.

POST-RACE WORDS FROM SHARMAN-NEWELL (Interview courtesy of Tanis Chavez)

Q: First off how are you feeling?
A: "It is a great feeling! No going to complain it went pretty well. Did not think the race would go that quick. I am an 800 guy, so I will not complain"

Q: In preparation that went into this, how long have you been training to break four?
A: "It has been a long time coming, in the sense that my training cycle back home in the UK goes on quite late. I came back and did Cross Country, did not take a break, and kept the fitness going all the way into Indoor."

Q: Your name is going to go into the history books, what does that mean to you?
A: "It has been surreal, not sure I have really processed it yet. It has taken me four years to learn the 800 times. I do not even know the mile times yet. Hope it holds up. Hopefully nobody can beat it."

Q: What else do you have up your sleeve?
A: "There is a little more left to come.I will leave that to when it happens."

The Pack had a great meet with three overall winners, and numerous personal records.

Sharman-Newell won the Men's Invite Mile, while newcomer Emil Meggle (Germany), who was making his debut for the ThunderWolves won the Men's 600 Meters. Veteran distance runner Jadyn Herron (Queen Creek, Ariz./Casteel) was the final Pack member to take home a win, winning the Women's Mile.

Meggle won the unconventional 600 meters with a time of 1:19.37 to win his first event for the Pack. The most impressive thing for Meggle is the young man just got off a plane from Germany this past week, and was thrown into the mix, making an instant impact.

Herron, one of the most reliable runners for this Pack Squad, proved once again why she belongs in the conversation with the best in Division II. The distance runner who helped the ThunderWolves to the National Championship this past season in Cross County, and also competed in the National Championship last season in Outdoors, won the Women's Mile with a time of 4:57.36.

Janise Everett (Colorado Springs, Colo./Mesa Ridge) continued to prove why she is one of the best up and coming sprinters in the nation, as the sophomore ran a time of 7.72, finishing third in the event, and the highest of any Division II racer in the event.

CSU Pueblo legend Helen Braybrook (Frieston, United Kingdom) was invited to the Women's Invite Mile, competiting against professional athletes, and proved why she belongs with the best of the best. Braybrook finished fourth in the event with a time of 4:49.12, finishing the highest of Division II competitors.
