Women's Lacrosse Drops Road Contest at Westminster

Pack Outscores Griffins, 7-6, Over Final Three Periods of Friday's Game

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Colorado State University Pueblo women's lacrosse continued its season-long five game road trip here in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play here Friday evening with a hard-fought 12-7 setback to Westminster University at Dumke Field.
 
With the setback, the Pack drops its record to 2-8 overall and 0-6 in the RMAC, while Westminster improved to 4-5 overall and 4-2 in the league.
 
The Pack will conclude the road trip with a 1 p.m. game on Sunday in Grand Junction, Colo., against Colorado Mesa University.
 
Graduate student attacker Sedona Sargent (Bellingham, Wash./Sehome) led the way offensively for the Pack as she recorded her second hat trick this season with three goals and added two assists for five points. Sophomore attacker Elise Magee (Port Moody, British Columbia/Dr. Charles Best Secondary) added two goals and an assist for three points.
 
The Pack, who trailed 6-0 after the opening period, outscored the Griffins, 7-6, over the final three periods to cap the scoring.
 
Westminster jumped in front 6-0 in the first period, before the Pack finally found the goal nine-plus minutes into the second period on a free position shot by Sargent to cut Westminster's lead to 6-1.
 
The Griffins capped the first half scoring on an unassisted goal by Oliva Petrosky with 45 seconds left in the period to give the Griffins a 7-1 halftime lead.
 
CSU Pueblo opened the third period with goals by freshman attacker Carla Drinkwater (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) and freshman attacker Leeah Carmine (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly) in the opening seven-plus minutes of the period to pull within 7-3. The first goal was assisted by Magee, while the second goal was assisted by senior midfielder Baylee Mee (Reno, Nev./Galena).
 
Maddie Kelleher scored her second goal of the game with 7:48 left in the third period to give the Griffins an 8-3 lead. Magee would score the fourth Pack goal with 6:30 left in the period to pull within 8-4, before Jordan Williamson answered with back-to-back goals to give the Griffins a 10-4 lead with 5:36 left in the period. Sargent would give the Pack an unassisted goal with 4:35 left in the period to pull the Pack within 10-5 heading into the final period.
 
Sargent and Magee scored the Pack's two fourth period goals with Sargent's coming on a free position shot and Magee's coming off an assist by Sargent. The Griffins would use fourth period goals by Madi Rogers and Shaina Shoughro to cap the scoring.
 
The Pack were outshot, 36-22 in the game and 27-15 in shots on goal. Sargent paced the Pack with seven shots, while Mee took four shots in the loss.
 
Despite losing the shots battle, the Pack won the ground ball battle, 37-33, as Sargent finished with eight, while Mee and senior defender Maddie Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek) each had four ground balls.
 
Westminster also held a 11-4 edge in draw controls and was 23-for-23 on clears. The Pack was 21-for-22 on its clear attempts.
 
The Pack finished with 11 caused turnovers as Mee tallied three, while Miller and freshman goalie Breonna Mason (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) each had two.
 
Shoughro paced Westminster with three goals, while Williamson, Kelleher and Petrosky each had two goals in the win. Kelleher also had a team-high five ground balls and Rogers finished with five draw controls.
 
Mason (2-7) took the loss in goal for the Pack as she played all 60 minutes and finished with 15 saves, while allowing 12 goals and recording two ground balls.
 
The Griffins played two goalies in the game as Gabriella Cheminan played 48-plus minutes in the cage and finished with six saves and one ground ball. Zoe Garside played nearly 12 minutes and allowed two goals for the Griffins.
