PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo women's lacrosse completed its 2024 road schedule here Sunday afternoon with a 16-3 setback to Colorado Mesa in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at Community Health Unity Field.
Sunday's game capped a five-game road trip for the ThunderWolves as they fall to 2-9 overall and remain winless in RMAC play with an 0-7 record, while Colorado Mesa improves to 7-4 overall and 6-1 in the RMAC. The Pack finished with a 2-5 mark on the road this season.
After keeping the game close in the first period as the Pack trailed 5-2, including holding a 2-1 lead following goals by freshman midfielder
Reese Wasmund (Portland, Ore./West Linn) and graduate student attacker
Sedona Sargent (Bellingham, Wash./Sehome) in the first six-plus minutes of the game. Wasmund's goal was assisted by sophomore attacker
Elise Magee (Port Moody, British Columbia/Dr. Charles Best Secondary) and Sargent's goal came off a free position shot. Following Sargent's goal, CMU reeled off eight straight goals, including scoring the final four goals of the first period and scoring four more goals in the second period to hold a 9-2 lead at the half.
In the third period, the Mavericks scored three more unanswered goals to hold an insurmountable 12-2 lead heading into the final period.
The Mavericks opened the fourth period by scoring three straight goals to push its lead to 15-2 with 4:21 left in the game. Mesa scored 14 straight goals after Sargent's free position goal in the first period.
CSU Pueblo would stop the Mavs 14-goal flurry with a goal by senior midfielder
Baylee Mee (Reno, Nev./Galena) that was assisted by Magee with 1:32 left in the game. The goal was Mee's 13th of the season and 61st of her career.
CMU would cap the scoring with an unassisted goal by Caroline Ohngemach with 20 seconds left in the game.
The Pack were outshot, 42-13 in the game and Mesa held a 28-9 edge in shots on goal. Mee and Magree combined for seven of the Pack's 13 shots as Mee took four shots and Magee had three.
CMU won the draw battle, 12-9 as Magee earned four draw controls, while Emme Rezoski had six for the Mavs. The Pack also finished with 16 ground balls as freshman goalie
Breonna Mason (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) had four for the Pack. Mesa finished with 30 ground balls in the win.
The Pack was 16-for-23 on clears, while Mesa was a perfect 22-for-22 on clears.
Mason recorded 12 saves and added four ground balls and a caused turnover in 60 minutes in goal for the Pack.
Colorado Mesa got 16 goals from nine different players as Justine Anderson led the way with four, while Ohngemach and Amber Wennerstrom each had three goals in the win. The Mavs also had 12 assists with Ohngemach finishing with four and Peyton Ivey adding three. Wennerstrom paced the Mavs with four ground balls and Kelsey Viger was credited with seven caused turnovers.
Shannon Murphy played a little over 52 minutes in goal and allowed two goals, recorded six saves and had two ground balls. Sophia Bailey played the final seven-plus minutes and allowed a goal and did not record a save.
The Pack will next be in action next Saturday, April 20 as they host Fort Lewis with an 11:30 a.m. RMAC contest at ALG Stadium. That game will begin a three-game homestand for the Pack to close out the 2024 regular season. Fort Lewis picked up a 10-9 win over the Pack on April 6 in Durango, Colo.
