Women's Lacrosse Scores Nine Goals at Home Against Dominican University of California

Magee, Lessick and Wasmund Each Score Three Goals Against Penguins

PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo women's lacrosse held a 6-4 lead early in the second period here Thursday, before Dominican University of California outscored the ThunderWolves 9-3 over the remainder of the contest in suffering a 13-9 setback to the Penguins in non-conference action at ALG Stadium.
 
With the setback, the Pack falls to 0-2 on the season, while Dominican improves to 1-1 on the season.
 
The Pack offense was led by two goals each from graduate student midfielder Caira Lessick (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City), sophomore attacker Elise Magee (Port Moody, British Columbia/Dr. Charles Best Secondary) and freshman midfielder Reese Wasmund (Portland, Ore./West Linn), while Magee added an assist for three points. In addition, senior midfielder Baylee Mee (Reno, Nev./Galena), freshman midfielder Sophia Rinn (Eagle, Colo./Eagle Valley) and graduate student attacker Sedona Sargent (Bellingham, Wash./Sehome) each found the back of the net one time. Mee also had an assist for two points.
 
Freshman Breonna Mason (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) played the full 60 minutes in goal as she recorded nine saves and added five ground balls. Mee and Magee each had four draw controls and Lessick had three, while Wasmund and Mason each tallied a team-high five ground balls.
 
Taylor Pieri led the Penguins with four goals and an assist for five points, while Siena Fairbanks and Brooke Vafi each scored three goals and Nora White had two goals and an assist for three points. Julianne Lane had a goal for Dominican to close the 13 team goals.
 
Arin Wilson played all 60 minutes in goal and finished the game with nine saves and had two ground balls and two turnovers.
 
The Pack got on the scoreboard first in Thursday's game as Magee scored on a free position shot just 2:21 in the contest. DUC, though, responded by scoring three straight goals to give the Penguins a 3-1 lead with 6:11 left in the opening period.
 
Following that three goal flurry by Dominican, the Pack came back and used goals by Mee, Rinn and Magree to give the Pack a 4-3 lead with 1:58 left in the first period. Mee's goal was unassisted, while Rinn's goal was unassisted, and Magee's score came on a free position shot.
 
White's free position goal with 34 seconds left in the opening period tied the game at 4-all.
 
The Pack would open the second period with goals by Lessick and Sargent to give the Pack a 6-4 lead just four minutes into the period. Dominican would respond by closing the second period by scoring five unanswered goals to take a 9-6 lead at the half.
 
Dominican used goals by Lane and Pieri in the opening seven minutes of the third period to give the Penguins an 11-6 lead. Lessick would stop the Penguins scoring run with a goal of her own off an assist by Mee to pull the Pack within 11-7. Fairbanks gave the Penguins a 12-7 lead after three periods.
 
Wasmund scored both of her goals to open the fourth period scoring to pull the Pack to 12-9 with 6:33 left in the game. The Penguins capped the scoring with a free position goal by Pieri with 14 seconds left in the game.
 
The Pack were outshot, 31-24 in the game as Lessick took nine shots and Sargent added five shots. Fairbanks and Vafi each took seven shots in the win.
 
CSU Pueblo was 15-for-16 on clears, while Dominican was 16-for-20 on their clear attempts. Dominican also held a 19-18 edge in ground balls. 

The Pack caused 10 turnovers in the game with Wasmund recording three and Lessick and senior defender Samantha Schmidt (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge) each had two. 
 
The ThunderWolves will return to action on Monday, March 11 as they open a two-game road trip to Ohio with a 10 a.m. MT game at Lake Erie College, before concluding the trip on Tuesday, March 12 with an 8 a.m. MT game at Tiffin University.
