Women's Lacrosse Battles UCCS in Road RMAC Contest

Pack Held 4-2 Lead in Second Period Against Mountain Lions

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo women's lacrosse continued its five-game road trip in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play here Saturday afternoon with a hard-fought 17-8 loss to UCCS at Mountain Lion Stadium.
 
The loss was the fourth straight for the ThunderWolves as they fall to 2-6 overall and 0-4 in the RMAC, while UCCS improves to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the league.
 
In Saturday's game, the Pack scored three straight goals over a span of nearly seven minutes over two periods to take a 4-2 lead. That scoring run seemed to ignite the Mountain Lions, UCCS closed the second period by scoring six of the final seven goals to take an 8-5 halftime lead. UCCS would outscore the Pack, 9-3, in the second half to set the final margin.
 
Sophomore attacker Elise Magee (Port Moody, British Columbia/Dr. Charles Best Secondary) and freshman midfielder Reese Wasmund (Portland, Ore./West Linn) had a hand in seven of the Pack's eight goals as Magee scored three goals and added an assist, while Wasmund had two goals and two assists. Graduate student attacker Sedona Sargent (Bellingham, Wash./Sehome) also scored two goals in the game.
 
After Julia Patrick scored the first goal of the game for UCCS just two-plus minutes into the game, the Pack came back about two minutes later and tied game on a goal by Magee that was assisted by Wasmund.
 
UCCS would retake the lead on an unassisted goal by Ashley Weiss with 6:11 left in the opening period, but the Pack responded by closing the period with goals from Magee on a free position shot and a goal by freshman attacker Leeah Carmine (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly) that was assisted by freshman midfielder Sophia Rinn (Eagle, Colo./Eagle Valley) to give the Pack a 3-2 lead after the opening 15 minutes of play.
 
The Pack lead grew to 4-2 following a goal by Wasmund that was assisted by Magee just 3:06 into the second period. UCCS would come right back and score three straight goals over a span of four minutes to take a 5-4 lead.
 
Sargent's unassisted goal with 5:51 left helped the Pack retie the game at 5. But UCCS closed the second period by scoring the final three goals to take an 8-5 lead at the half.
 
The Mountain Lions run continued into the third period as they scored three straight goals to push out to an 11-5 lead. Wasmund, though, stopped the Mountain Lions' run with a free position goal with 7:22 left in the period. Patrick would score two goals over the final six-plus minutes of the period to give UCCS a 13-6 lead heading into the final period.
 
Sargent's goal that was assisted by Wasmund to open the fourth period brought the Pack within 13-7, but UCCS would score two straight goals to take a 15-7 lead with 9:03 left in the period. Magee added her final goal with 7:41 left to pull the Pack within 15-8, but UCCS would score two more goals to cap the scoring.
 
The Pack were outshot, 39-31, in the game as Mee and senior midfielder Baylee Mee (Reno, Nev./Galena) each took eight shots, while Sargent finished with seven shots and Wasmund added five shots.
 
Both teams collected 32 ground balls in the game as freshman goalie Breonna Mason (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) led the way with eight ground balls, which his tied for second-most in a single game in school history. Magee added five ground balls as she collected seven draw controls in the loss.
 
The Pack won the turnover battle as UCCS had 19 turnovers and the Pack had 18 turnovers.
 
UCCS won the draw control battle, 16-12 and was 20-for-26 on clears, while the Pack was 12-for-16 on clears.
 
Mason, who sat out this past Wednesday's game at No. 9 Regis, returned to action on Saturday and along with collecting eight ground balls, she also made 12 saves against UCCS.
 
UCCS got 17 goals from eight different players with Patrick leading the way with six goals and added four draw controls and two ground balls. Erica Rivera and Kathryn Kossack each had five ground balls for the Mountain Lions.
 
Madison McGriff played all 60 minutes in goal for UCCS and she finished with 15 saves and added a ground ball and a caused turnover in the victory.
 
The Pack's season long road trip continues next Saturday, April 6 as they travel to Durango, Colo., for a 12 p.m. game at Fort Lewis.
