PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado State University Pueblo women's basketball squad fell at home to Adams State in overtime 61-57 on Saturday Night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.
With the loss, the ThunderWolves fall to 13-11 overall and 8-8 in the RMAC, while Adams State improves to 17-7 overall and 12-4 in conference play. With the loss, the Pack fall back into a tie for eighth place in the RMAC with Fort Lewis.
In a game that seemed to be dictated and controlled by the Pack, turnovers were the achilles heel for CSU Pueblo as the ThunderWolves committed 29 turnovers to just 16 for Adams State. The Pack outscored Adams State 20-9 in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime.
The Pack were led by junior guard
Landri Hudson (Aurora, Colo./Wyoming) as she scored 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Hudson was a big reason the Pack were able to get the game into overtime as she scored 12 points in the fourth quarter.
Redshirt junior forward
Alisha Little (Aurora, Colo./Northern Colorado) continued her dominance, as she recorded an NCAA Division II leading 17th double-double of the season. Little scored 16 points and pulled down 16 rebounds. In addition, Little recorded 6 blocks tonight to trail Kim Good (1999-02) of Colorado Mines by one for the most career blocks (286) in Colorado Women's Collegiate history. Little also broke a school record for most blocks in a single season tonight as she now ups her season total to 81. Little leads all of NCAA Division II in blocks as well.
Redshirt junior forward
Autumn Watts (Centennial, Colo./McNeese State) continued to impress as she scored 10 points on 5-of-13 shooting and pulled down 12 rebounds.
The Pack started the game off strong on a 14-2 run with a strong start from Little and Watts. Junior guard
Tomia Johnson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Florida Gulf Coast) and grad student guard
Romola Dominguez (Denver, Colo./Central Arkansas) got in on the scoring barrage as well. The Pack shot 53 percent in the first quarter and held Adams State to just 17 percent, and took a 20-11 lead into the second quarter.
Adams State made their charge in the second quarter as the Grizzlies turned up the defensive intensity, holding the Pack to just 18 percent in the quarter and only five points. Adams States' leading scorer Harmanie Dominguez led the charge in the quarter as she scored 10 points in the second and the Grizzlies led 35-30 at halftime.
Adams State extended their lead to 10 as the Grizzlies started the quarter on a 5-0 run to lead 35-25. The Pack struggled again in the third quarter from the field as they only shot 23 percent. CSU Pueblo did a good job defensively in the quarter as well as they held Adams State to just 22 percent. The Grizzlies led 44-33 going into the final frame.
Trailing by 11 going into the fourth the Pack needed a boost and they got just that. The ThunderWolves opened the fourth on an 11-2 run sparked by Hudson and just like that the Pack were back in the game, trailing just 46-45. The Pack eventually tied the game up at 53 apiece when Little tipped in her own miss just under a minute to play. Both teams grinded out defensive possessions to end regulation with the game going into overtime.
The Pack drew first blood in overtime, continuing to go through the hot hand in Hudson as she scored on a give and go with Little. Dominguez (Adams State) answered with a three to give Adams State the lead back at 56-55. With 2:40 left to go in overtime, Dominguez (CSU Pueblo) knocked down a couple of clutch free throws to give the lead back to CSU Pueblo, but that was short lived as Dominguez (Adams State) came back down with another three-pointer to give the Grizzlies the lead 59-57 just under two minutes.
After both teams picked up timely stops, the Pack had their chance to tie the game with 23 seconds left, but the Grizzlies forced Dominguez (CSU Pueblo) into a turnover. Elania Watson iced the game for the Grizzlies as she went down and converted off the CSU Pueblo turnover to put Adams State up 61-57 with 17 seconds to play. Hudson could not come down the other end and hit a three pointer and 61-57 ended up being the final score.
