Volleyball Hits Season High .455, Records Season-High 10 Blocks in Three-Set Sweep Over UCCS

DENVER, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo volleyball hit a season-high .455 and recorded a season-best 10 blocks en route to earning a three-set sweep here Friday evening to UCCS (25-18, 25-7, 25-16) in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Regional pod match at Regis Fieldhouse.

With the win, the ThunderWolves improved to 5-8 overall, while UCCS falls to 5-8 on the season. The Pack will close out the RMAC Regional pod on Saturday at 3 p.m. against 13th-ranked Regis University.

In Friday's win, which was the fourth in the last matches for the Pack, sophomore opposite side hitter Kendall Harrington (San Antonio, Texas/Tom C. Clark) and redshirt sophomore outside hitter Payton Van Veen (Springfield, Mo./Washburn) each had 13 kills, while redshirt sophomore outside hitter Savannah Coats (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) had nine kills in the win. Harrington hit .812 as she had no errors on 16 attacks, while Van Veen hit .522 with one error on 23 swings.

"Our ladies had it going today. Offensively, they were sharp, and I thought they executed well in a lot of phases. We know we'll need more of the same tomorrow and look forward to getting to match-up against a talented Regis squad," CSU Pueblo head volleyball coach Austin Albers said following the match. "I'm looking forward to seeing how we compete!"

The Pack's block party was led by five block assists by both Van Veen and redshirt sophomore middle blocker Golden Finch (Albuquerque, N.M./Cal State Bakersfield), while junior middle blocker Josey Nunn (Kingwood, Texas/Porter) added four blocks, including the lone solo block and Coats had three block assists.

Senior setter Grace Jansen (Sandy, Utah/Jordan) had 18 assists and three of the Pack's eight aces, while junior setter Sabrina King (Parker, Colo./Lutheran) had 17 assists. Sophomore outside hitter Sadie Scoville (Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleasant Grove) paced the defense with 13 digs.

The Pack had 44 kills, 37 digs and hit over .400 in all three sets, including hitting .478 in the third set. The Pack was also a perfect 8-for-8 on sideout percentage in the second set.

UCCS was paced offensively by seven kills and a .500 attack percentage from Julia Geiger, while Joei Barela had 21 assists and five digs each from Mackenzie Ransom and Lauryn Shockley.

For the match, UCCS hit just .057 as they recorded 24 kills, had three aces and 21 digs.

Set 1: The opening set was the most competitive of the match as it featured three ties and two lead changes. UCCS held an early 4-2 lead when the Pack responded with a 9-4 run capped by a kill from sophomore Taylor Cary (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Rock Canyon) to take an 11-8 lead. UCCS used a 3-1 run to pull within 12-11, before the Pack used a 10-5 run capped by an assisted block by Nunn and Van Veen. Two kills by Shockley sandwiched around a kill by Coats brought the Mountain Lions within 23-18. Harrington, though, would cap the 25-18 set win with back-to-back kills. The Pack hit .440 in the set as Harrington (6) and Van Veen (4) combined for 10 of their teams 15 kills. UCCS hit .148 in the set.

Set 2: The second set belonged to the Pack as they scored the first three points and led 17-1 before UCCS would score its second point of the set. The Pack closed the set by scoring eight of the final 14 points to seal its 25-7 set win. The Pack hit .448 in the set as Van Veen had six kills and Coats recorded four kills, while UCCS hit -.057 with just five kills and seven errors on 35 swings.

Set 3: UCCS opened the third set by scoring the first three points and led 4-2 when the Pack used 9-2 run capped by an ace from Van Veen to push in front 11-6. The Pack's lead eventually grew to 16-8 when UCCS responded by scoring two of the next three points to cut the Pack's lead to 18-9. After the Pack extended its lead to 22-13, UCCS fought back by scoring three of the next four points to pull within 23-16, but a Harrington and an attack error by Sydnee Walker capped the Pack's 25-16 set win. In the set, the Pack hit .478 with five kills from Harrington and they also had four aces and recorded five blocks. UCCS would hit .115 in the set.
