PUEBLO, Colo. – With the completion of the 2023 regular season on Saturday, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference officially released the bracket for this coming week's RMAC Baseball Tournament that will be held at Bus Bergman Sports Complex in Grand Junction, Colo., and begins on Wednesday, May 10.
The Pack, who completed the regular season by taking three of four games in its final regular season home series this weekend against Regis University, tied for fourth in the regular season standings, but earned the No. 5 seed in the RMAC Tournament and will open the tournament on Wednesday against No. 2 seeded MSU Denver. Time for Wednesday's game, which is the opening contest of three first round games at Suplizio Field, will be at 11 a.m.
CSU Pueblo, who is sporting a 21-29 overall record and went 17-15 in the RMAC, fell to the No. 5 seed in the tournament as they lost a tiebreaker to No. 4 seed Colorado School of Mines, who also went 17-15 in league play after taking three of four games this weekend at UCCS. Mines won the tiebreaker over the Pack as the two teams split their four game RMAC series, but Mines took two games off MSU Denver, while the Pack were swept by the Roadrunners.
Regular season champion and nationally No. 2 ranked Colorado Mesa, who went 30-2 in league play and is sporting a 40-9 overall record, is the No. 1 seed and will face No. 6 seeded Colorado Christian (18-30-1 overall, 14-18 RMAC) in the final of three opening round games on Wednesday.
The other first round match-up will have No. 4 seeded Mines (22-23 overall, 17-15 RMAC) facing No. 3 seeded Regis (28-22 overall, 19-13 RMAC) in the second of three games on Wednesday.
The tournament, which runs through May 13, is a double-elimination format with the winner of the tournament earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament.
Last season, the Pack were the No. 4 seed in the RMAC Tournament, and they posted a 1-2 record as they opened with a first-round loss to No. 3 seed MSU Denver, 4-2, before collecting a 6-5 win over top-seeded Colorado Mesa on the second day of the tournament and then ending its tournament run with an 8-6 loss to No. 6 seeded UCCS.
The Pack have won five RMAC Tournament titles with the most recent championship coming in 2013. In addition to winning five titles, the Pack have also had five runner-up finishes since 2002. Since 2006, the Pack have posted a 22-30 record in the tournament and have been runners-up in 2006, 2012, 2014 and 2016 and won titles in 2009 and 2013. The Pack also captured tournament titles in 1994, 1996 and 2004.
During the 2023 season, the Pack went 9-14 against the five other schools that qualified for the RMAC Tournament as they were 4-1 against Regis, 3-1 against CCU, 2-3 against Mines and 0-4 against both Colorado Mesa and 0-5 against MSU Denver.
Since its runner-up finish at the 2016 tournament, the Pack have gone just 4-10 in the tournament as they have gone 1-2 the past two years in the tournament, while going 0-2 in both 2017 and 2019 and 2-2 in 2018.
