PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado State University Pueblo men's and women's track and field teams recorded three NCAA provisional qualifying marks here Saturday at as the ThunderWolves hosted the CSU Pueblo Last Chance Invitational at the ThunderBowl.
Saturday's meet, which was attended most of the schools from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, was the final home competition for the Pack before hosting the NCAA Division II National Outdoor Track Championships on May 25-27.
At Saturday's meet, the Pack women competed in five events and set season best marks in three of those five events and recorded NCAA provisional marks in both the high jump and discus, while the Pack men competed in nine events and recorded one season best mark in the high jump and had an NCAA provisional time in the 1,500 meters.
On the women's side, the Pack also recorded two first place finishes as sophomore
Mikayla Jones (Aurora, Colo./Vista Peak Prep) placed first in the high jump with an NCAA provisional mark of 1.72 meters (5-7.75"), which is tied for the 10th-best mark in Division II this season, while sophomore
Katherine Higgins (Mead, Colo./Ponderosa) was first in the discus with a season-best, school record and NCAA provisional mark of 46.72 meters (153-3), which is 19th best in Division II this season. Higgins' mark bettered the old school mark of 46.09 set by Summer Eberhardt at the West Texas A&M Invitational in 2015.
The Pack also two second place finishes as freshman
Febe Wessels (Pretoria, South Africa) was second in the discus with a mark of 45.54 meters (149-5) and sophomore
Margot Thomas-Gatel (Chapet, Ile-de-France, France/Notre Dame Les Oiseaux) was second in the 3,000 Stepplechase with a time of 11:38.54.
Freshman
Gabrielle Dunich (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo Central) posted a season-best time of 26.37 in the 200-meter dash as she finished third in the event.
The other event that the Pack women competed in on Saturday was the hammer throw as sophomore
Olivia Mikaelian (Albuquerque, N.M./El Dorado) was fifth with a mark of 49.32 meters (161-10).
Meanwhile, on the men's side, the Pack recorded one first place finish, three second place finishes and set a new school record in the high jump as freshman
Keith McInnis (Denver, Colo./Denver North) finished second in the event with a school record leap of 2.00 meters (6-6.75"). The 2.00-meter mark bettered the old school record of 1.95 meters set by junior
Terrel Johnson (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley) at the CSU Early Bird Invitational in 2021.
The lone NCAA provisional mark was set in the 1,500-meter run by fifth-year senior
Matisse Virey (Lyons, France) as he was sixth in the event with a time of 3:50.36.
Senior
Justin Jenks (Helena, Mont./Helena Capital) took home first place in the hammer throw with a mark of 56.06 meters (183-11). In addition to Jenks, sophomore
Lucas Moran (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo West) was second in the hammer throw with a mark of 47.52 meters (155-11).
Freshman
Ryan King (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo West) was second in the 100-meter dash (11.02) and fourth in the 200-meter dash (22.22), while McInnis was sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.99.
The Pack went third and fourth in the long jump as Johnson was third with a mark of 7.12 meters (23-4.50") and senior
Carl Schmidt (Wiesbaden, Germany/Elly-Heuss School) was fourth with a mark of 7.12 meters (23-4.50").
Freshman
Cedrick Kassi (Plano, Texas/Plano West) was third in the triple jump with a mark of 14.57 meters (47-9.75").
Freshman
Zakk Thomas (Kirtland, N.M./Kirtland Central) and freshman
Moosah Alsaffar (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) were fourth and fifth in the javelin with marks of 50.77 meters (166-7) and 43.18 meters (141-8) respectively.
The final event the Pack competed in was the shot put as freshman
Xavier Freeman (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo East) was fourth with a toss of 14.46 meters (47-2.25").
The Pack are expected to compete at several last chance meets next weekend as they look to qualify more student-athletes to compete at the National Outdoor Championships.
