GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado State University Pueblo women's outdoor track and field team competed in the discus here Sunday at the Mines Multi-Last Chance Meet held at Stermole Track & Crouch Field Event Complex.
Sunday's last chance meet hosted by Colorado School of Mines was the final opportunity to qualify for the 2023 NCAA Division II Championships as the field of competitors will be unveiled Tuesday, May 16 on
www.NCAA.com.
At the Mines Multi Last Chance Meet, the Pack women sent two competitors in the discus. In the discus, freshman
Febe Wessels (Pretoria, South Africa) recorded a first place finish with a mark of 42.19 meters (138-5), while sophomore
Katherine Higgins (Mead, Colo./Ponderosa) was third in the event with a mark of 34.72 meters (113-11).
CSU Pueblo is expected to have at least 10 student-athletes qualify for the outdoor national championships as two Pack men – sophomore
Reece Sharman-Newell (Hampshire, England) and senior
Justin Jenks (Helena, Mont./Helena Capital) – are ranked in the Top 3 in Division II in the 800-meter dash and shot put respectively.
In addition to Sharman-Newell and Jenks, senior
Nate Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo./Widefield) is seventh in Division II in the shot put, while Johnson is 17th in the decathlon and junior
Kaleb Tipton (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) is ranked 14th nationally in the 800-meter run.
On the women's side, the Pack are expected to get at least six qualifiers into the outdoor national championships as sophomore
Helen Braybrook (Frieston, United Kingdom/Oakham School) is ranked second nationally in the 800-meters and sixth nationally in the 1,500-meters, while sophomore
Margot Thomas-Gatel (Chapet, Ile-de-France, France/Notre Dame Les Oiseaux) is ranked 17th in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase and sophomore
Mikayla Jones (Aurora, Colo./Vista Peak Prep) is 11th in the high jump. In the shot put, Higgins and Wessels are fifth and 17th nationally, while Higgins is 21st in the discus.
