CANYON, Texas - Colorado State University Pueblo men's and women's outdoor track team sent two competitors to compete in the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon here Thursday and Friday at the Jo Meaker Classic & Multi held at the West Texas A&M Track & Field Complex.
The Pack student-athletes that competed were junior
Terrel Johnson (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley) in the decathlon and freshman
Mary Scoggins (Rangely, Colo./Rangely) in the heptathlon.
In the men's decathlon, which featured 10 events over two days, Johnson finished third out of seven competitors as he recorded an NCAA national qualifying, a personal best and school record score of 6,794. That mark is currently the sixth-best in Division II men's outdoor track and field. The 6,794 points bettered the old school record of 6,268 set by Jacob Smith in 2018 at the Mines Nature's Bakery Invitational and bettered his previous career mark of 6,144 at the 2022 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships.
On Friday's second day of action, Johnson opened with a third place finish in the 110-meter hurdles (15.30) to score 814 points, before placing fourth in the discus with a toss of 32.02 meters that scored him 504 points and then finishing third in the pole vault with a mark of 3.85 meters to score 576 points. Johnson was then fourth in the javelin with a mark of 45.81 meters and then finished the event with a third place finish in the 1,500-meter dash with a time of 4:52.96 that scored him 601 points.Â
In Thursday's first day of competition, Johnson scored 3,772 points after opening with a second place showing in the 100-meter dash with a time 11.08 to score 843 points and then winning the long jump with a mark of 7.17 meters to score 854 points. Johnson was then fourth in the shot put with a mark of 11.32 meters to score 565 points, before tying for first in the high jump (1.97 meters) to score 776 points and then ending the first day with a third place finish in the 400-meter dash (51.78) to score 734 points.Â
UCCS Thorben Hast won the decathlon with a total score of 7,090 points, while West Texas A&M's Gerard Bryant was second with 6,904 points.Â
Meanwhile, in the heptathlon, which featured seven events, Scoggins scored a total of 3,439 points to finish 11th out of 12 competitors in the event.
In Friday's second day of action, Scoggins with a 10th place finish in the long jump with a mark of 4.89 meters to score 530 points, while finishing ninth in the javelin with a mark of 22.66 meters to score 338 points and was second in the 800-meters with a time of 2:25.23 to score 754 points.Â
On Thursday's opening day, Scoggins was 12th in the 100-meter hurdles (22.46) to score 130 points, before being ninth in the high jump with a mark of 1.44 meters to score 555 points. She was then eighth in the shot put (9.13 meters) to score 473 points and then posted a 10th place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 659 points to score 659 points.Â
West Texas A&M's Laiten Greeson won the heptathlon with 5,136 points, while Barton County Community College's Ana Couto with 5,117 points.Â
The complete men's and women's outdoor track and field teams will return to action next weekend (April 13-14) at they compete at the Brian Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif.Â
