Women's Lacrosse Drops Fourth Straight, Falls at Home in RMAC Play to Fort Lewis

Broom and Magee Combine for Six Goals and Three Assists in Setback

PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo women's lacrosse continued its season-long five-game homestand here Friday afternoon by suffering a hard-fought 17-9 setback to Fort Lewis College in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at Art and Lorraine Gonzales Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium.

With the setback, the ThunderWolves drop its fourth straight game and move its record to 1-8 overall and 0-5 in the RMAC, while Fort Lewis collected its first win of the season as they improved to 1-7 overall and 1-4 in the RMAC.

In Friday's game, the Pack were outshot, 39-31 and were outscored 11-5 in the second half after trailing 6-4 at the half.

Freshman midfielder Katie Broom (Houston, Texas/Spring) posted her second straight game with four goals and added two assists for six points. In addition to Broom, freshman midfielder Elise Magee (Port Moody, British Columbia/Dr. Charles Best Secondary) added two goals and an assist for three points. Those two players have combined for 37 goals, 20 assists and 57 points on the season.

The Pack did win both the ground ball (18-14) and draw control battle (16-14), but Fort Lewis was 22-for-26 on its clear attempts in the win. CSU Pueblo was just 14-for-22 on clears.

Both teams also committed 22 turnovers, but the Pack committed 16 fouls and had three yellow cards and a green card. FLC was called for eight fouls and also had four yellow cards.

FLC jumped out to a 3-0 lead just seven minutes into the game, before the Pack used goals from freshman midfielder Katie Schimpf (Edmonds, Wash./Edmonds Woodway) and Magee to pull within 3-2 after the opening period of play. Schimpf's goal was assisted by junior midfielder Baylee Mee (Reno, Nev./Galena) and Magee's goal was assisted by Broom.

The Pack would take a 4-3 lead after opening the second period with back-to-back goals in the first 78 seconds from Broom that was assisted by Magee and Magee that was assisted by Broom.

FLC, though, would cap the first half scoring three straight goals to take a 6-4 lead at the half.

The Skyhawks opened the third period by scoring seven straight goals to turn its 6-4 halftime lead into a 13-4 advantage following a free position goal by Zio Delgado, who was one of five FLC players to score at least two goals in the game.

Sophomore attacker Parker Delp (Kent Island, Md./Kent Island) ended the Skyhawks' flurry of goals as she scored an unassisted goal with Pack in a man-up situation to cut FLC's lead to 13-5 with 1:26 left in third period. FLC used a free position goal from Haley Dostie with one second left in the period to hold a 14-5 lead heading into the final period.

The Pack would outscore the Skyhawks, 4-3, in the final period to set the final margin. In the period, the Pack got three goals from Broom and a goal that assisted by Schimpf from senior midfielder Sedona Sargent (Bellingham, Wash./Sehome).

Broom and Sargent each took eight shots in the game with five of those shots being on goal. In addition, Delp and Magee each took four shots in the loss.

Senior midfielder Caira Lessick (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City) collected nine draws and picked up four ground balls in the game. She also caused three of the Pack's 13 turnovers. Senior defender Jillian Kelly (Pueblo, Colo./Centennial) also had three caused turnovers in the game.

Caprietta Abbadessa led the way offensively for Fort Lewis as she scored five goals. She entered the game having just one goal on the season. In addition to Abbadessa, Dostie added four goals and two assists for six points, while Nina Polk had three goals in the win.

Rebecca Kiyokawa had six draws and Dostie and Samantha Rogers each had two ground balls for the Skyhawks.

Sophomore Naomi Price-Burton (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) played all 60 minutes in goal and had four saves and added both a ground ball and a caused turnover.

Averi Basso played all 60 minutes in the cage for Fort Lewis and finished the game with 10 saves, a ground ball and a caused turnover.

The Pack will look to get back into the win column next Friday, April 14 as they host Westminster for a 4 p.m. game at ALG. The game will be Senior Day for the Pack. Westminster collected a 21-18 win over the Pack in Salt Lake City in the team's RMAC opener on March 10.
