Women's Lacrosse Celebrates Senior Day With Home Contest Against Westminster

Broom, Lessick Combine for Five Goals in Setback to Griffins

4444PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo women's lacrosse continued its season long five-game homestand here Friday afternoon as the ThunderWolves suffered an 18-7 setback to Westminster College in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play on Senior Day at Art and Lorraine Gonzales Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium.

Prior to Friday's game, the Pack honored its three seniors in a pregame ceremony and the three seniors recognized were defender Jillian Kelly (Pueblo, Colo./Centennial), midfielder Ciara Lessick (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City) and midfielder Sedona Sargent (Bellingham, Wash./Sehome).

With Friday's setback, the Pack fall to 1-9 overall and 0-6 in the RMAC, while Westminster improved to 4-4 overall and 3-3 in the league.

Unlike the team's meeting earlier this season when the Griffins scored three goals in the fourth period after a lightning delay to post a 21-18 victory in Salt Lake City, Utah, Westminster outscored the Pack, 9-3 in the second half to turn a 9-4 halftime lead into an 11 goal victory.

The Pack, who were outshot 41-23 in the game, did manage to win the ground ball battle on Friday as they collected a season-high 23 ground balls, including a season-high five from freshman midfielder Katie Broom (Houston, Texas/Spring), while sophomore attacker Parker Delp (Kent Island, Md./Kent Island) and sophomore goalie Naomi Price-Burton (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) each had four on the day.

Offensively, Broom recorded her fourth hat-trick of the season as she finished with three goals and added an assist for four points. In addition to Broom, Lessick scored two goals.

With her two goals, Broom pushed her season total to 21 goals to take over the team lead from freshman midfielder Elise Magee (Port Moody, British Columbia/Dr. Charles Best Secondary), who held without a goal for the first time this season by Westminster's defense.

The Pack struggled with turnovers in Friday's game as they tied a season high with 26, including 14 turnovers in the first half.

Broom got the scoring started in Friday's game as she scored on a free position shot nearly 90 seconds into the contest.

The Griffins, though, used two goals over a span of 39 seconds to take a 2-1 lead following a goal by Grace Carico with 11:20 left in the opening period. The Griffins first goal of game was scored by Lauren Shoughro on free position shot with 11:59 left in the period.

Broom would add her second goal off an assist from Magee at the 10:05 mark of the first period to tie the game at 2-all.

The Griffins, though, would score two unanswered goals later in the first period to lead 4-2 after the opening 15 minutes of action.

Lauren Shoughro, who scored six goals in the game for the Griffins, gave the visitors a 5-2 lead following her goal with 11:44 left in the second period.

Lessick would score off an assist by Broom just 36 seconds later to pull the Pack within 5-3, but the Griffins scored three straight goals in a span of two-plus minutes to push out to an 8-3 lead with a little under eight minutes left in the period.

Junior midfielder Baylee Mee (Reno, Nev./Galena) would score nearly a minute later to pull the Pack within 8-4, but a goal by Annalisa Yanagihara with 1:40 left in the period gave Westminster a 9-4 halftime lead.

The Pack would score only three goals in the second half as Lessick scored on a free position shot just a little two minutes into the third period, while Delp scored an unassisted goal with 6:12 left in the fourth period and Broom scored on a free position shot with 1:04 remaining to complete the scoring.

In addition to the six goals from Lauren Shoughro, Maddie Kelleher added four goals and two assists in the win. Carcio and Runia Page each had two goals for the Griffins. The Pack, though, held Westminster's No. 2 goal scorer, Shania Shoughro, who is the younger sister of Lauren Shoughro, to just one goal and one shot.

Broom took nine of the Pack's 23 shots, including putting five of those shots on goal.

Lessick collected eight draw controls as the Griffins held a slight 16-13 edge on the draw.

The Pack were 3-for-4 on their free position shots, while Westminster was just 5-for-15.

CSU Pueblo finished with 12 caused turnovers in the game as Magee was credited with four.

Price-Burton played all 60 minutes in goal for the Pack and had 10 saves and also had four ground balls and a caused turnover.

Gabrielle Cheminant played all 60 minutes in goal for the Griffins and recorded eight saves, while allowing seven goals and tallying one ground ball and one caused turnover.

The Pack will look to snap a five-game losing skid on Sunday, April 16 as they close out its 2023 home schedule with a 3 p.m. RMAC contest against Colorado Mesa. Mesa collected a 20-5 win over the Pack earlier this season in Grand Junction, Colo., on March 12.
