CHADRON, Neb. – The Colorado State University Pueblo men's and women's track and field teams medaled in two events on the second day of the 2023 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships held here at the Nelson Physical Activity Center hosted by Chadron State College.
After the second day of the three-day championship meet, the CSU Pueblo women sit in third place out of 13 teams with 41 points after eight events, while the CSU Pueblo men sit in fourth place out of 10 schools with 29 points after seven scoring events. On Saturday, the Pack women scored 20 points in the five scoring events, while the Pack men scored 15 points in four of the five scoring events.
UCCS continues to lead the women's team standings with 48.5 points, while Colorado Mesa is second with 45 points. On the men's side, Mines took over first place with 65 points, while Western Colorado is second with 45 points and UCCS is third with 39 points.
On the men's side, the Pack got things started with junior
Terrel Johnson (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley) earning the first RMAC title for the Pack as he captured the gold medal in the decathlon with a score of 6,756 points, which is an NCAA provisional mark. Johnson scored 3,107 in Saturday's final day of the decathlon after scoring 3,649 points to hold the first day lead in the event.
The Pack would then score two points in the discus as senior
Nate Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo./Widefield) placed seventh with a mark of 46.67 meters (153-01). In addition to Miller, freshman
Xavier Freeman (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo East) and senior
Justin Jenks (Helena, Mont./Helena Capital) were 13th and 14th in the event with marks of 43.22 meters (141-09) and 42.58 meters (139-08) respectively.
Sophomore
Kaleb Beloy (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage) scored three points in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase with a time of 9:30.80. Sophomore
Joseph Harker (Rehoboth, N.M./Bryant & Stratton College) was 12th with a time of 9:52.20.
The Pack also competed in two preliminary events on Saturday as freshman
Evan Johnson (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) was 11th in qualifying for the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.86, while the Pack advanced to two to the finals on Sunday in the 800-meter run as junior
Kaleb Tipton (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) posted the top qualifying time of 1.52.16 and sophomore
Reece Sharman-Newell (Hampshire, England) was third in qualifying with a time of 1:53.45.
Meanwhile, on the women's side, the Pack got things started with freshman
Mary Scoggins (Rangely, Colo./Rangely) finished ninth in the heptathlon with a season-best 3,819 points. Scoggins scored 1,539 points in Saturday's second of the heptathlon after tallying 2,280 points on Friday's first day.
The first event the Pack scored in on Saturday was the discus as freshman
Febe Wessels (Pretoria, South Africa) was fourth in the event with a mark of 42.70 meters (140-01), while sophomore
Olivia Mikaelian (Albuquerque, N.M./El Dorado) was seventh with a mark of 40.89 meters (134-02) and freshman
Bailey Graves (Laurel, Mont./Laurel) was 10th with a mark of 38.58 meters (126-07).
Sophomore
Mikayla Jones (Aurora, Colo./Vista Peak Prep) took home a silver medal in the high jump with a mark of 1.66 meters (5-05.25"). The silver medal was the second of the meet for the Pack women as Wessels earned a silver medal in the javelin on Friday.
The final event the Pack women scored in on Saturday was the 3,000-meter Steeplechase as sophomore
Margot Thomas-Gatel (Chapet, Ile-de-France, France/Notre Dame Les Oiseaux) was fourth with a time of 10:59.84.
The Pack women also competed in one preliminary event on Saturday as sophomore
Helen Braybrook (Frieston, United Kingdom/Oakham School) recorded a first-place time of 2:09.36 to qualify for Sunday's final. The time was an NCAA provisional mark. In addition to Braybrook, freshman
Jadyn Herron-Jonap (Queen Creek, Ariz./Casteel) was 10th with a time of 2:16.35.
The third and final day of the 2023 RMAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships will conclude on Sunday, April 30 with the men's javelin final starting at 9:30 a.m. followed by the rest of the field events starting at 11:30 a.m. and the track events starting at 12:30 p.m.
