Women's Lacrosse Scores 11 Goals in RMAC Road Setback Against Fort Lewis

Broom Records Two Assists to Tie School's Single Season School Record

DURANGO, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo women's lacrosse began its three-game road trip to conclude the regular season here Saturday afternoon as the ThunderWolves suffered an 18-11 loss to Fort Lewis in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play at Ray Dennison Field.
 
With the loss, the Pack fell to 1-11 overall and 0-8 in the RMAC, while Fort Lewis improved to 3-8 overall and 3-5 in the league.
 
The road trip will continue with a 4 p.m. game on Wednesday, April 26 at No. 3 ranked Regis and then they conclude the regular season with a 4 p.m. game on Friday, April 28 at UCCS.
 
In Saturday's game, the Pack were outshot, 35-25 and outscored 10-3 in the second half after the two teams were tied all tied at eight at the half.
 
Freshman midfielder Katie Broom (Houston, Texas/Spring) recorded a hat trick and has now scored three or more goals in game five times this season as she leads the team in goals with 24. Broom also added two assists to push her team-high total to 20 on the season.
 
Broom's 20 assists are tied for the most in a single season in school history. She is tied with Allison Wurscher, who also had 20 assists in 2016. In addition, he 44 points are tied for seventh on the school's single season chart.
 
In addition to Broom, senior midfielder Ciara Lessick (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City) and sophomore attacker Parker Delp (Kent Island, Md./Kent Island) each scored two goals.
 
Both teams each committed 27 turnovers and Fort Lewis was 17-for-18 on clears, while the Packer were 14-for-15 on clears.
 
Fort Lewis, though, held a 20-13 edge on draw controls and FLC held a 25-16 advantage on ground balls.
 
The Pack jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening four-plus minutes of the game  thanks to goals by senior midfielder Sedona Sargent (Bellingham, Wash./Sehome) and Broom. Sargent's goal came off a free position shot, while Broom's goal was unassisted.
 
Haley Dostie, who is the reigning RMAC Offensive Player of the Week, got the Skyhawks on the scoreboard on a goal that was assisted by Zio Delgado with 9:30 in the opening period.
 
The Pack, though, would answer back with four straight goals to take a 6-1 lead. The goals were scored by Broom, Lessick, junior midfielder Baylee Mee (Reno, Nev./Galena) and freshman midfielder Katie Schimpf (Edmonds, Wash./Edmonds Woodway).
 
FLC would add two goals in a span of a minute to cut the Pack's lead to 6-3 with 3:31 left in the period. Delp, though, gave the Pack a 7-3 lead on her goal that was assisted by Broom with 2:07 remaining in the opening period.
 
The Skyhawks would close the first period with goals two goals by Dostie to cut CSU Pueblo's lead to 7-5 after the first 15 minutes of play.
 
Dostie opened the second period with two straight goals to tie the game at 7-all with 9:06 left in the period. Freshman midfielder Elise Magee (Port Moody, British Columbia/Dr. Charles Best Secondary) gave the Pack an 8-7 lead on an assisted goal with 8:14 left in the period. FLC, though, tied the game at half on a goal by Kaylin Vanzant.
 
After Delgado scored a goal just 84 seconds into the third period to take a 9-8 lead, before Broom tied the game on an unassisted goal with 11:56 and then Lessick added a goal that was assisted by Magee to give the Pack a 10-9 lead with 10:30 left in the period.
 
FLC closed by scoring five of the last six goals in the period to take a 14-11 lead into the fourth period. The Pack goal was scored by Delp on a free position shot with 3:46 left in the period.
 
The Skyhawks sealed its win by scoring four goals in the fourth period and holding the Pack without a score in the period.
 
Dostie led the way for FLC with six goals, while Vanzant added four goals. Delgado, Caprietta Abbadessa, and Nina Polk each scored two goals in the win.
 
Broom took seven shots for the Pack, while Sargent added five shots and Magee and Schimpf each had four shots.
 
Sargent, Broom, and Lessick combined for 10 draw controls, while Rebecca Kiyokawa had nine draw controls for FLC.
 
Lessick caused four turnovers and recorded three ground balls, while Mee had four ground balls and caused two turnovers.
 
Sophomore Naomi Price-Burton (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) played all 60 minutes in goal and had eight saves and allowed 18 goals.

Averi Basso played all 60 minutes in the cage for Fort Lewis and finished the game with eight saves, six ground balls, two caused turnovers and allowed 11 goals.
