Women's Lacrosse Drops Second Straight Home Game, Falls Sunday to UCCS

Katie Broom Tallied Career Highs in Goals (4), Assists (3) and Points (7) in Setback

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado State University Pueblo women's lacrosse team continued its season-long five-game homestand here Sunday afternoon as the ThunderWolves suffered a 23-12 setback to UCCS in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play at the Art and Lorraine Gonzales Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium.

With the setback, the Pack fall to 1-7 overall and 0-4 in the RMAC, while UCCS improves to 3-6 overall and 2-1 in the RMAC. The Pack are now 0-4 at home this season, including being 0-2 at home in RMAC play.

Freshman midfielder Katie Broom (Houston, Texas/Spring) scored a career-high four goals on a career-high eight shots and added three assists for a career-high seven points. In addition to Broom, who also a career-high 11 draw controls in the game, freshman midfielder Elise Magee (Port Moody, British Columbia/Dr. Charles Best Secondary), junior midfielder Baylee Mee (Reno, Nev./Galena) and senior midfielder Caira Lessick (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City) each had two goals.

UCCS opened the game by scoring nine goals in the first period and added six more goals in the second period to lead 15-9 at the half. The Mountain Lions, who have now won five straight games in the series, would outscore the Pack, 8-3 in the second half to post the victory. Ava Goodnature gave the Mountain Lions a 1-0 lead just 39 seconds into the contest as she scored off an assist from Brielle Fannin, but the Pack would tie the game nearly a minute later on a goal by Magee that was assisted by Mee.

UCCS would then reel off four straight goals to take a 5-1 lead with 8:57 left in the first period.

Lessick and Mee would score goals off of assists by Broom to bring the Pack within two goals at 5-3 with 4:46 left in the opening period. UCCS would then score four of the next five goals with Broom scoring the lone goal for the Pack with 3:06 left in the period to give the Mountain Lions a 9-4 lead after the opening 15 minutes of play. The two teams combined for 13 goals and 23 shots in the first period.

Sophomore attacker Parker Delp (Kent Island, Md./Kent Island) opened the second period with an unassisted goal to pull the Pack within  9-5 just 50 seconds into the period.

UCCS, though, responded by scoring six of the next seven goals to push its lead to 15-6 with 5:10 left in the period. The Pack's lone goal during the flurry came from senior attacker Sedona Sargent (Bellingham, Wash./Sehome) as she scored a man-down goal with 10:19 left in the period.

Trailing 15-6 with a little more than five minutes left in the period, the Pack would close the period by scoring three straight goals to pull within 15-9 at the half. Broom scored the first goal on free positon shot with 4:14 left, before Lessick scored about a minute later off an assist from Broom and Mee added the third goal with 28 seconds left in the period off an assist from Magee.

UCCS dominated the scoring in the third period as they scored six times, including getting two goals from Julia Patrick, who finished the game with seven goals and four assists. The Lions scored six of the seven goals in the period as the lone Pack goal came by Broom with 7:05 left in the period. Broom's goal made the score 19-10.

Sarah Watts scored two goals to open the fourth period to increase UCCS' lead to 23-10. Magee would score her second goal of the game with 8:15 left and Broom added her fourth goal off an assist from freshman midfielder Kate Schimpf (Edmonds, Wash./Edmonds Woodway) with 3:25 left in the game to complete the scoring.

CSU Pueblo held a 36-31 edge in shots in Sunday's game as Broom and Lessick led the way with eight shots, while Sargent took seven shots. Broom, Sargent and Lessick combined for 13 shots on goal on the day.

UCCS won the ground ball battle, 12-10  and also held a 24-15 edge in draw controls. While Broom had 11, Lessick had six and Sargent tallied five. Goodnature led UCCS with five draws.

The Pack, though, won the turnover battle, 18-16 as they caused 10 turnovers in the game with Mee and Schimpf each recording two caused turnovers in the game.

UCCS was 5-for-6 on free position shots, while the Pack were 2-for-5.

The Pack, though, were whistled for six yellow cards and a green card in the game, while UCCS was called for a three yellow cards.

Sophomore Naomi Price-Burton (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) played all 60 minutes in goal and recorded three saves and added two ground balls to go with the 23 goals she allowed.

Madison McGruff played all 60 minutes in goal for UCCS and she recorded seven saves, allowed 12 goals and had three ground balls and a caused turnover.

The Pack will look to snap a four-game losing skid as they return to action on Friday, April 7 with a 12 p.m. home RMAC contest with Fort Lewis.
