PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado State University Pueblo women's lacrosse team closed out the home portion of its 2023 schedule here Sunday afternoon with a 19-1 setback to Colorado Mesa in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at the Art and Lorraine Gonzales Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium.
With the setback, CSU Pueblo falls to 1-10 overall and 0-7 in the RMAC, while Mesa improves to 7-5 overall and 6-1 in the RMAC. The Pack complete its 2023 home schedule with an 0-7 record.
In Sunday's game, the Pack were outshot 32-15, including being outshot, 19-4 in the first half as Mesa jumped out to an insurmountable 12-0 lead at the half. The 15 shots were the second fewest of the season for the Pack.
The one goal were the fewest scored the Pack this season and their lowest total in a game since being held to one goal in a 21-1 loss last season at Mesa.
Mesa scored six goals in each of the first two periods, before scoring three goals in the third period and tallying four goals in the final period.
The Pack's only goal came in the opening two-plus minutes of the third period as junior midfielder
Baylee Mee (Reno, Nev./Galena) took a pass from freshman midfielder
Katie Broom (Houston, Texas/Spring) to score her 13th goal of the season. The assist by Broom was her team-leading 17th of the season.
Mesa spread their scoring amongst 11 players as Caroline Ohngemach led the way with four goals, while Melanine Evans, Justine Anderson, Kiley Davis, Taylor Jakeman and Ali Bryant each had two goals in the win.
After being held to just four shots in the first half, the Pack took 11 shots in the second half. Mesa took 13 shots after halftime after taking 19 in the opening half.
Mesa held a 27-17 edge on ground balls, but the Pack defense was credited with a season-high 21 caused turnovers as senior defender
Jillian Kelly (Pueblo, Colo./Centennial), freshman attacker
Audrey Allendorf (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) and junior midfielder
Lily Hemingway (Shreveport, La./Hendrix) each caused three turnovers in the game.
Along with causing 21 turnovers, the Pack forced Mesa into 27 turnovers in the game. The Pack had 28 turnovers as Mesa caused 18 turnovers in the game.
The teams combined to commit more turnovers (55) than shots (47) in the contest.
Both teams each had 11 draws in the game, while Mesa was strong on clears (22-for-26). The Pack were just 12-for-23 on clears in the game. Senior midfielder
Caira Lessick (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City) recorded a game-high five draws.
Sophomore
Naomi Price-Burton (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) played all 60 minutes in the cage for the Pack and finished with four saves, a ground ball and a caused turnover.
Shannon Murphy played 58-plus minutes in net for the Mavs and recorded six saves, three ground balls and allowed just one goal.
The Pack will return to action next Saturday, April 22 as they travel to Durango, Colo., for a 1 p.m. RMAC contest at Fort Lewis College. FLC picked up a 17-9 win in Pueblo on April 7.
