AZUSA, Calif. – The Colorado State University Pueblo men's and women's track and field teams completed its outdoor regular season here this weekend by combining for nine NCAA Division II provisional marks at the 2023 Bryan Clay Invitational at Cougar Stadium.
This weekend's meet featured athletes from all divisions of collegiate programs and professional runners.
On the women's side, the Pack women recorded four NCAA provisional marks and also posted two season best marks in the nine events they competed in, while on the men's side, the Pack men posted five NCAA provisional marks and recorded two season-best marks in the eight events they competed in.
The top performance of the meet for the ThunderWolves was turned in by sophomore
Katherine Higgins (Mead, Colo./Ponderosa) as she finished first out of a field of 43 competitors in the shot put with an NCAA provisional mark of 15.42 meters (50'7.25"). In addition to Higgins, freshman
Febe Wessels (Pretoria, South Africa) was 10th in the event with a mark of 13.54 meters (44'5.25").
Wessels was also 14th in the javelin with a mark of 38.63 meters (126'9") and 22nd in the discus with a toss of 40.61 meters (133'3"), while Higgins placed 14th in the discus with a mark of 42.27 meters (138'8").
Sophomore indoor track All-American
Helen Braybrook (Frieston, United Kingdom/Oakham School) recorded NCAA provisional marks in both the invite 800-meters and 1,500-meter runs. In the 800-meter run, Braybrook placed 33rd with a time of 2:07.26 and was 74th in the invite 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:20.58. That time is the third fastest in school history.
Sophomore
Margot Thomas-Gatel (Chapet, Ile-de-France, France/Notre Dame Les Oiseaux) was 52nd in the 3,000 Steeplechase with a season-best and NCAA provisional time of 10:33.26.
In the high jump, sophomore
Mikayla Jones (Aurora, Colo./Vista Peak Prep) placed sixth in the high jump with a mark of 1.62 meters (5'3.75").
Sophomore
Taylor Holland (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo County) and freshman
Jadyn Herron-Jonap (Queen Creek, Ariz./Casteel) were 33rd and 39th in the regular 800-meter run with times of 2:13.51 and 2:13.77 respectively.
Meanwhile, on the men's side, the top performance was turned in by senior
Justin Jenks (Helena, Mont./Helena Capital) as he was sixth in the hammer throw with an NCAA provisional mark of 58.07 meters (190'6").
Sophomore
Reece Sharman-Newell (Hampshire, England) was ninth in the 1,500 invite and 19th in the 800-meter invite with NCAA provisional times of 3:45.45 in the 1,500 meters and 1:48.57 in the 800 meters.
Junior
Terrel Johnson (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley) was seventh in the high jump with a mark of 1.92 meters (6'3.50").
Senior
Carl Schmidt (Wiesbaden, Germany/Elly-Heuss School) turned two Top 15 finishes in the long jump and 400-meter hurdles. In the long jump, Schmidt was 10th with a leap of 7.21 meters (23'8") and was 14th in the 400 hurdles with a time of 53.30, which was an NCAA provisional mark.
Junior
Tyrell Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./Mesa Ridge) turned one NCAA provisional time and recorded two Top 25 finishes as he was ninth in the 400-meters with a season-best and NCAA provisional time of 47.33 and was 23rd in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.47.
The Pack will now turn their attention to the postseason as they will compete in the 2023 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships on April 28-29 hosted by Chadron State College in Chadron, Neb.
