Pack Set Three School Records, Win Seven Events and Record 10 NCAA Provisional Marks

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado State University Pueblo men's and women's track and field teams concluded its three-week run of home events here Saturday as the ThunderWolves set three school records, 25 season best marks and 10 NCAA Division II provisional marks at the CSU Pueblo Open held at the CSU Pueblo ThunderBowl.

Saturday's meet was the third consecutive home outdoor track and field meet this season for the Pack as they have also hosted the Dr. Dan Caprioglio Early Bird Invitational two weeks ago and the Spank Blasing Invitational last weekend.

At the event, CSU Pueblo won a total of seven events (four by the women and three for the men) and they recorded 14 Top 3 finishes at the two-day meet.

On the women's side, the Pack set one new school record, recorded 13 season-best marks and had three NCAA provisional marks.

The school record that was broken came in the shot put as sophomore Katherine Higgins (Mead, Colo./Ponderosa) posted an NCAA provisional mark and took home first place in the event with a mark of 15.45 meters (50'8.25"). The mark bettered the old mark of 14.85 set by Jenna McKinley at the Jo Meaker Classic in 2021. Higgins' mark is tops in NCAA Division II this season. In addition to her first-place finish in the shot put, Higgins was also first in the discus with a season-best mark of 43.54 meters (142'10").

Freshman Febe Wessels (Pretoria, South Africa) posted a second place finish in the javelin with a mark of 37.76 meters (123'11").

In the high jump, sophomore Mikayla Jones (Aurora, Colo./Vista Peak Prep) recorded a first place finish with a season-best and NCAA provisional mark of 1.69 meters (5'6.50"). The 1.69 meter mark is fifth-best in NCAA Division II. In addition to the high jump, Jones posted a season best mark in the long jump of 5.30 meters (17'4.75") and was second in the triple jump with a season-best mark of 11.45 meters (37'6.75").

The other first place win on Saturday for the Pack came from sophomore Helen Braybrook (Frieston, United Kingdom/Oakham School) as she recorded a season-best and an NCAA provisional time of 4.22.89, which is the second-best time in NCAA Division II this season.

CSU Pueblo's two relay teams – 4-x-100 relay and 4-x-400 relays – each finished in third place on Saturday. The 4-x-100 relay team recorded a season-best time of 49.59, while the 4-x-400 relay team posted a season-best time of 3:54.63. The members of the 4-x-100 relay team were senior Erin Case (Parker, Colo./Loveland), freshman Skyler Kimble (Gig Harbor, Wash./Gig Harbor), freshman Gabrielle Dunich (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo Central) and senior Ashley Miller (Monroe, Iowa/Minot State), while the members of the 4-x-400 relay team were Braybrook, sophomore Taylor Holland (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo County), sophomore Ella Harris (Star, Idaho/Eagle) and Dunich.

The other season best marks came in the 3,000 Steeplechase as sophomore Margot Thomas-Gatel (Chapet, Ile-de-France, France/Notre Dame Les Oiseaux) posted a time of 11:24.32 to finish in fourth place, while Harris was seventh in the 400 hurdles with a season best time of 1:07.52. Redshirt freshman Sarah Renberg (Fresno, Calif./Edison) was seventh in the 5,000-meter run with a season-best time of 18:34.25. Meanwhile, on the men's side, the Pack recorded 12 season best performances, seven NCAA provisional marks, two school records, five first place finishes and nine Top 3 finishes.

Both school record marks came in field events as freshman Cedrick Kassi (Plano, Texas/Plano West) was third in the triple jump with a school record leap of 14.88 meters (48'10"), which was an NCAA provisional mark. Kassi's jump is currently ranked 10th in NCAA Division II.

Meanwhile, the other school record was set by senior Justin Jenks (Helena, Mont./Helena Capital) set a new school record in the hammer throw with a season-best, NCAA provisional and first place mark of 59.30 meters (194'7"), which is 11th best in NCAA Division II. Jenks' mark bettered his old school record of 54.66 meters at the Maverick Invitational in 2022.
