Women's Lacrosse Second Half Rally Falls Short in Road Setback to Catawba

Sargent Records Hat Trick, Broom, Mee and Lessick Each Score Two Goals to Complete Spring Break Trip

SALISBURY, N.C. – The Colorado State University Pueblo women's lacrosse team concluded its two-game Spring Break trip to the Carolina here Wednesday evening with a hard-fought 19-13 setback to Catawba College at Shuford Stadium.

Wednesday's game was 24 hours after the ThunderWolves opened Spring Break trip with an impressive 21-5 win at Erskine College to snap the Pack's four game losing skid to open the 2023 season.

With the setback, the Pack fall to 1-5 overall on the season, while Catawba improves to 2-8 on the season.

In Wednesday's game, the Pack trailed 12-5 at the half, but outscored the Indians, 8-7 in the second half, including scoring five of those eight goals in the third period to trail 13-10 heading into the final period.

Catawba, though, would outscore the Pack 6-3 in the final period to increase its final margin to six goals and snap its seven-game losing streak.

Senior midfielder Sedona Sargent (Bellingham, Wash./Sehome) tallied a hat trick as she scored three times on five shots, while four other Pack players finished with two goals in the game, among them were freshman midfielder Katie Broom (Houston, Texas/Spring) and senior midfielder Caira Lessick (Oregon City. Ore.), who also had assist to go along with their two goals.

With her three goals, Sargent moved into a tie with freshman midfielder Elise Magee (Port Moody, British Columbia/Dr. Charles Best Secondary) for the team lead in goals with 13. Magee also scored a goal in Wednesday's game.

The Indians got off to a strong start in Wednesday's game as they scored the first four goals of the game to lead 4-0 with a little more than four minutes left in the opening period. The Pack, though, would get unassisted goals from Magee and Lessick in the final 26 seconds of the opening period to cut Catawba's lead to 4-2 after the opening 15 minutes of play.

Catawba would push its lead to 6-2 in the opening 90 seconds of the second period and after sophomore attacker Parker Delp (Kent Island, Md./Kent Island) pulled the Pack within 6-3, Ella McCusker would score her second goal of the game to give the Indians a 7-3 lead with 12:22 left in the second period.

After junior midfielder Baylee Mee (Reno, Nev./Galena) scored to bring the Pack within 7-4 with 12:05 left in the period, Catawba would respond by scoring five straight goals to push out to a 12-4 lead. Broom, though, would score off an assist by Lessick with 3:28 left in the period to pull the Pack within 12-5 at the half.

The third period belonged to the Pack as they scored five goals on just eight shots to pull within 13-10 heading into the final period. In the period, Sargent scored three consecutive goals with the second goal being a man-up goal, to cut Catawba's lead to 12-8 with 4:58 left in the period.

Delp would add her secord goal of the game off an assist from Broom to pull within 12-9 with 3:23 left in the period. McCusker, though, stopped the flurry of Pack goals with her third goal of the game with 30 seconds left to give Catawba a 13-9 edge. Broom would cap the third period with a goal with 21 seconds left to pull the Pack within three goals heading to the final period.

Mee would open the fourth quarter with an unassisted goal just 57 seconds into the period to cut Catawba's lead to 13-11.

That would as close as the Pack would get as the Indians scored three straight goals of a span of nearly two-plus minutes to push its lead to 16-11. The final two goals came as Catawba was playing a man-up due to a yellow card on Mee.

Lessick would score her third goal of the game with 7:19 left to drop Catawba's lead to 16-12, but Joey Baillie would add a goal with 2:47 left to extend the Indians' lead to 17-12.

Trailing 17-12, freshman midfielder Katie Schimpf (Edmonds, Wash./Edmonds Woodway) capped the scoring for the Pack with an unassisted goal, before Catawba used goals by Caroline Cox and McCusker in the final 45 seconds of the game to cap the game's scoring.

McCusker finished the night with five goals and added an assist for the Indians, while Cox scored four goals and Baillie and Mary Sorvillo each scored three goals in the win.

The Pack were outshot, 35-28 in the game as Catawba held a 26-25 advantage in shots on goal. The Pack put 13 of their 14 second half shots on goal.

Catawba won the ground ball battle, 23-21 with Mee and Lessick each collecting four in the game.

The Pack won the draw control battle, 20-18 as Lessick (8) and Broom (7) combined for 15 of those 20 draw controls. Baillie, Sarah Maier and Erin Young each had five draw controls on the game.

Wednesday's game was physical as the teams combined for 12 cards and the teams combined for 46 turnovers as the Pack had 24 turnovers and had seven yellow cards and a green card, while Catawba had 22 turnovers and three cards, including a green card for Baillie.

The Pack were just 1-for-3 on their free position shots, while Catawba was 5-for-7 on their free position shots.

Sophomore Naomi Burton-Harris (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) faced 35 shots and made seven saves and had two ground balls and allowed 19 goals.

Evie Kauserud recorded 12 saves, allowed 13 goals and added two ground balls in the win.

The Pack will now take eight days off before returning home to host No. 2 ranked Regis University in a 4 p.m. match on Friday, March 31 at 4 p.m.
