Women's Lacrosse Posts Dominating 21-5 Road Victory Over Erskine

Win Was First Career Coaching Win for Interim Head Coach Taylor Christensen

DUE WEST, S.C. – Colorado State University Pueblo women's lacrosse used 21 goals tallied by eight different players here Tuesday evening as the ThunderWolves collected its first win of the 2023 season in dominating fashion with a 21-5 victory over Erskine College at Huggins Field.

Along with earning its first win of the season and improving to 1-4 overall on the year, Tuesday's victory was also the first career victory for CSU Pueblo interim head coach Taylor Christensen. Christensen made a return to the sidelines on Tuesday after missing the last three games due to the passing of her father.

In Tuesday's game, senior midfielder Caira Lessick (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City) and freshman midfielder Elise Magee (Port Moody, British Columbia/Dr. Charles Best Secondary) each had five goals, while sophomore attacker Parker Delp (Kent Island, Md./Kent Island) and senior midfielder Sedona Sargent (Bellingham, Wash./Sehome) each tailed three goals and freshman attacker Araceli Sanchez (Denver, Colo./Heritage) had two goals in the victory.

The Pack scored the first 14 goals of the game and led 16-1 at the half, before outscoring the Fleet, 5-4, in the second half to set the final margin.

Tuesday's 21 goals were a season high for the Pack and the most goals scored in a game since tallying 25 goals in a 25-1 win last season at home against Adams State on April 3, 2022. It is just the sixth time in program history that the Pack have scored 20 or more goals in a game.

Delp got the scoring started just a little over two minutes into the game as she took a pass from freshman midfielder Katie Broom (Houston, Texas/Spring) and scored the first goal of the game. Lessick would score a goal 35 seconds after Delp and then Sargent added the third goal of the game just 20 seconds later to give the Pack a 3-0 lead just three minutes into the contest.

Magee and Lessick would each score four goals in the opening period to help propel the Pack to its 13-0 lead after the opening 15 minutes of play. In addition to Magee and Lessick, Delp scored two goals in the period, while Broom and freshman midfielder Katie Schimpf (Edmonds, Wash./Edmonds Woodway) also scored goals in the opening period.

Lessick added her fifth goal of the game just 92 seconds into the second period to give the Pack a 14-0 lead.

Erskine, who fell to 2-3 on the season with the loss, would finally get on the scoreboard thanks to an unassisted goal by Jenna Varner with 10:30 left in the second period. Following Varner's goal, freshman attacker Audrey Allendorf (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) and Magee would score goals with the latter goal being assisted by junior midfielder Baylee Mee (Reno, Nev./Galena) to take a 16-1 lead at the half.

The Fleet would score two of the three goals in the third period with the Pack's lone goal being scored by Delp off an assist from Mee to hold a 17-3 lead heading into the final period.

In the fourth period, Sargent and Sanchez each scored two goals for the Pack, while Anna Ferrebee and Kristie Fisher scored for Erskine to cap the scoring.

The Pack finished the game with a 30-10 edge in shots, including a 25-10 edge in shots on goal. Sargent took six of those shots, while Magee and Lessick finished with five shots each. In fact, 10 different players took at least one shot in the game for the Pack.

Pueblo held a 17-12 advantage on the draw in Tuesday's game as Mee had seven draw controls in the win. The Pack also had 16 ground balls to 11 for Erskine with Mee collecting six of those 16 ground balls.
Ferrebee and Fisher each scored two goals for Erskine in the loss.

Sophomore Naomi Price-Burton (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) played all 60 minutes in the cage for the Pack and recorded five saves and allowed a season low five goals.

Madelyn Rogers played all 60 minutes in goal for Erskine and made four saves and had a ground ball, while allowing 21 goals.

The Pack will look to make it two straight wins as they conclude their Spring Break trip the Carolinas with a 5 p.m. MT game on Wednesday, March 22 at Catawba.
