Women's Lacrosse Outscored 6-0 in Second Half of Home Setback to Rockhurst

PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo women's lacrosse was outscored 6-0 in the second half here Thursday afternoon of its 16-6 non-conference setback to Rockhurst University at the Art and Lorraine Gonzales Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium.

With the setback, the ThunderWolves fell to 0-4 on the season and 0-2 at home, while Rockhurst improves to 5-2 overall and 1-1 on its four-game Spring Break trip to Colorado.

The Pack trailed 10-6 at the half after outscoring the Hawks, 5-3 in the second period, but the Hawks put the game out of reach by scoring six unanswered goals in the second half, including tallying five goals in the third period to lead 15-6 heading into the final period of play.

Freshman midfielder Katie Broom (Houston, Texas/Spring) and junior midfielder Baylee Mee (Reno, Nev./Galena) each scored two goals for the Pack, while senior midfielder Caira Lessick (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City) and freshman midfielder Elise Magee (Port Moody, British Columbia/Dr. Charles Best Secondary) also tallied a goal each in the loss.

For the game, the Pack were outshot, 39-24, including Rockhurst holding a 25-13 edge in shots on goal. In the first half, Rockhurst held a 23-13 advantage in shots.

The Pack did win the draw control battle in Thursday's game, 14-10, as Mee (6) and Lessick (4) combined for 10 of the 14 draw controls.

Rockhurst jumped out to a 4-0 lead just under six minutes into the Thursday's contest, before Mee would score the Pack's first goal of the game with 7:18 left in the opening period. The Hawks would close the opening period by scoring three straight goals to lead 7-1 after the first 15 minutes of action.

Magee would get the scoring started in the second period as she scored off an assist from Broom just two-plus minutes into the period to cut RU's lead to 7-2.

RU's Kelly Marion would score 18 seconds later to give the Hawks an 8-2 lead, the Pack would get unassisted goals from Broom and Mee to cut the deficit to 8-4 with 9:04 left in the period.

Following another goal by Marion that gave RU a 9-4 lead, Broom and Lessick would score goals for the Pack to pull within 9-6 with 1:18 left in the period. Both of those goals were assisted by senior midfielder Sedona Sargent (Bellingham, Wash./Sehome).

The Hawks, though, would score a man-up goal with one second left in the second period to give RU its 10-6 lead at the half. The Pack were a man-down on that goal thanks to a yellow card awarded to junior defender Maddie Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek) with 53 seconds left in the period.

Marion, Logan Derosia and Reagan Danner each recorded hat tricks for the Hawks as they scored three goals each, while Dani Mabry and Addison Bradley each scored two goals in the win. Mabry also added four assists for the Hawks.

Mee and Lessick each took six shots to pace the Pack, while freshman attacker Audrey Allendorf (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) had a game-high three ground balls.

The Hawks were 4-for-11 on their free position goal opportunities, while the Pack were 0-for-3 on their free position shots the game.

Both teams combined for 45 turnovers in the game as CSU Pueblo finished with 25 and Rockhurst had 20. Rockhurst held a 12-10 edge in caused turnovers as Broom, Magee and Mee each had two caused turnovers in the game.

CSU Pueblo will return to action next week (March 21-22) as they play two games on the East Coast during Spring Break. The Pack will open the road trip with a 5 p.m. ET game on Tuesday, March 21 at Erskine College and then will play in Salisbury, N.C., on Wednesday, March 22 against Catawba College at 7 p.m. ET.
