Women's Basketball Struggles in Second Half in Road Setback to Adams State

JaNaiya Davis Ties School Career Marks for Both Assists and Games Played

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo women's basketball concluded its three-game road trip here Saturday evening by suffering a 74-54 setback to Adams State University in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at Plachy Hall.
 
With the setback, the ThunderWolves drop their fourth straight game and fall to 10-12 overall and 7-9 in the RMAC, while Adams State improves to 15-7 overall and 11-5 in the league. In addition, the Pack fall to 2-7 on the road in RMAC play.
 
Saturday's game was a tale of two halves for the Pack as they trailed 31-30 at the half, but were outscored, 43-24 in the second half to suffer its sixth straight road loss in RMAC play.
 
In the second half, the Pack, whi are now in a three-way tie for third place in the RMAC standings, shot 27 percent (8-for-30) from the field and was just 2-for-14 (14.3 percent) from the 3-point line after shooting 42 percent (11-for-26) from the field and 27 percent (4-for-15) from the 3-point line in the first half.  
 
Graduate student guard JaNaiya Davis (Hewitt, Texas/Midway) paced the way offensively for the Pack as she tallied 15 points and seven rebounds. In addition, she had two assists to tie Suzanne Gonzales for first on the school's all-time list with 501 assists. In addition, Davis played in her 124th game at CSU Pueblo, which tied Tuileisu Anderson for first in school history for career games played.
 
In addition to Davis, graduate student guard/forward Charisse Fairley (Colorado Springs, Colo./Fresno State) added seven points and five rebounds.
 
After ASU jumped out to an 11-9 lead just four minutes into the game, graduate student guard Morgan Dial (Denver City, Texas/Western Texas College) drilled a trey with about five-and-half minutes left in the period to take a 12-11 lead. Dial's trey helped jump start an 8-3 run to push the Pack out to a 17-13 lead with 2:43 left in the period. The Grizzlies would respond by closing the opening quarter with a 7-0 run to take a 20-17 lead.
 
One night after scoring a season-low 12 first half points, the ThunderWolves scored 17 in the first quarter of Saturday's contest.
 
In the second quarter, the Pack scored five of the first seven points to tie the game at 22 with 7:27 left in the period. The run was capped by a 3-pointer from Davis, who scored nine of her team-high 17 points in the first half.
 
The two teams would take turns trading the lead until the Grizzlies retook the lead on a trey from Harmanie Dominguez with 2:03 left in the quarter. Dominguez's trey gave ASU a 31-28 lead.
 
Fairley, though, would bring the Pack within a point on her driving lay-up with 1:16 left in the period to cut ASU's lead to 31-30 at the half.
 
The Pack opened the third quarter by scoring three straight points thanks to two free throws by Davis and 1-of-2 free throws from sophomore guard Daeja Johnson (Queen Creek, Ariz./Casteel). Those three free throws gave the Pack a 33-31 lead.
 
ASU, though, would respond with a 13-3 run to take a 44-36 lead with 5:31 left in the third quarter. The run was capped by five straight points from Dominguez.
 
CSU Pueblo would respond as they reeled off five straight points on two free throws from senior guard Amaya Lewis (Hobbs, N.M./New Mexico JC) and a three-pointer from sophomore guard Landri Hudson (Aurora, Colo./University of Wyoming) to pull within 44-41 with four minutes left in the period. That would be as close as the Pack would get as the Grizzlies closed the period on 10-4 run to take a 54-45 lead into the final quarter.
 
The Grizzlies lead eventually ballooned to as much as 20 points in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Pack, 20-9, to complete the scoring.
 
Dominguez paced the Grizzlies offensively with 23 points, while Angeline Nageak added 15 points in the win.
 
For the game, CSU Pueblo shot 34 percent from the field and 21 percent (6-for-29) from the 3-point line. The Pack did shoot 10-for-12 (83.3 percent) from the line in the game.
 
Meanwhile, ASU shot 46 percent from the field and 37 percent from the 3-point line. They were 15-for-20 (75 percent) from the free throw line.
 
The Pack were outrebounded, 32-31 as along with Davis' seven boards, Hudson added a carer-high tying six boards in the game.
 
Both teams struggled to take care of the basketball as the two teams combined for 55 turnovers on the night. CSU Pueblo had 23 turnovers that led to 21 ASU points, while the Pack forced the Grizzlies into 22 turnover that led to 15 points.
 
ASU had 15 steals to 10 for the Pack, while CSU Pueblo blocked four shots with two of the blocks coming from Fairley.
 
CSU Pueblo will look to rebound next weekend (Feb. 10-11) as they return home to Massari Arena to host Colorado Christian for a 5:30 p.m. game on Friday, Feb. 10 and then host Chadron State for a 5:30 p.m. game on Saturday, Feb. 11. The Pack suffered a 76-71 loss at Colorado Christian on Dec. 3 and picked up a 75-66 win at Chadron State on Dec. 2.
