PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo women's basketball made 10 three-pointers and outscored Colorado Christian University 39-30 in the second half en route to earning a 76-57 victory over the Cougars in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at Massari Arena.
With the win, CSU Pueblo snaps a four-game losing skid and improves its overall record to 11-12 and moves to 8-9 in the RMAC, while CCU falls to 10-13 overall and 6-12 in the league. The Pack remained in a tie for seventh place in the league standings with Colorado Mesa.
The Pack will conclude the two-game homestand with a 5:30 p.m. game on Saturday, Feb. 11 against Chadron State, who suffered a 73-65 loss on Friday at New Mexico Highlands.
CSU Pueblo is now 10-2 this season when making at least 10 treys in a game. In Friday's game, graduate student guard
Morgan Dial (Denver City, Texas/Western Texas College) and sophomore guard
Landri Hudson (Aurora, Colo./University of Wyoming) each hit three treys in the win.
Friday's win was also keyed by six Pack players scoring in double figures as graduate student guard
JaNaiya Davis (Hewitt, Texas/Midway) led the way with a team-high 14 points and added nine rebounds, seven assists and eight steals. With her seven assists, Davis becomes the school's all-time leader in career assists as she entered the game tied for first with Suzanne Gonzales for career assists with 501. In addition, Friday's game was Davis' school record 125th game. Her 14 points pushed her career total to 1,438 points, which is fourth on the school's all-time list.
In addition to Davis, Hudson added 13 points and five rebounds, while Dial and graduate student guard/forward
Charisse Fairley (Colorado Springs, Colo./Fresno State) each scored 12 points. Sophomore guard
Daeja Johnson (Queen Creek, Ariz./Casteel) tallied 11 points and senior guard
Amaya Lewis (Hobbs, N.M./New Mexico JC) had a season-high 10 points and added five rebounds and in 25 minutes of action off the bench.
After shooting 48 percent from the field and 4-for-12 (33.3 percent) from the 3-point line to help the Pack to 37-27 lead at the half, the Pack shot 44 percent from the field and made six of 12 treys in the second half as they scored 39 points.
The Pack opened the third quarter by scoring 14 of the first 19 points to push its 37-27 halftime lead to 51-32 with five minutes left in the period. The run was capped by a trey from Dial.
CCU, though, would close the quarter by outscoring the Pack, 11-6, to pull within 57-43 after three quarters of play.
The Pack opened the fourth quarter on a 10-4 run to push its lead to 67-47 following a trey from Hudson with 7:47 left in the period. The run was keyed by six points from Hudson and another four points from Johnson.
CCU would once again mount a comeback as they scored five straight points to cut the Pack's lead to 67-52 with seven minutes left in the game. That would be as close as the Cougars would get as the Pack responded with a 6-0 run capped by a basket from Fairley with 4:28 left to push out to a 73-52 lead. The 21-point lead was the largest of the game for the home team.
After Mia Guest drilled a trey to pull CCU within 73-54 with 2:29 left, Dial would follow 57 seconds later with a lay-up and a free throw to help the Pack push its lead back out to 76-55 with 1:07 remaining. The Cougars ended the scoring with a basket from Makenna Bodette with 56 seconds left.
Agnes Paul paced the Cougars with 15 points and six rebounds, while Maggie Phipps added 11 points in the loss.
The Pack scored the first four points of the game, but CCU would respond by scoring 11 of the next 13 points to take an 11-6 lead just five minutes into the game. CSU Pueblo, though, would respond by scoring six straight points to take a 12-11 lead following a lay-up by Lewis with 2:05 left in the period.
After Phipps hit 1-of-2 free throws with 2:05 left to tie the game at 12-all, the Pack closed the opening quarter on 7-2 run to lead 19-14 after the first 10 minutes of play. Davis scored five of those seven points during the Pack's run.
CCU would score the first four points of the second quarter to pull within 19-18, but the Pack answered back with a 14-2 run capped by a three-pointer from Dial to push its lead to 33-20. The Cougars would close the quarter on a 7-4 run to cut CSU Pueblo's lead to 37-27 at the half.
For the game, CSU Pueblo shot 46 percent from the field and 42 percent from the 3-point line, while CCU shot 44 percent from the field and 33 percent from long distance.
The Pack outrebounded the Cougars, 38-22, including collecting 11 offensive rebounds and they forced 24 turnovers that led to 25 points in the win. CSU Pueblo finished with 15 turnovers and had 14 steals.
CSU Pueblo dished out a season high 21 assists as along with Davis' seven, sophomore guard
Tomia Johnson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Florida Gulf Coast) had five assists and senior guard
Jalen Long (Moreno Valley, Calif./Eastern Arizona) had four assists.
Both teams struggled from the free throw line as the Pack were 4-for-7 (57 percent) at the line, while CCU was 7-for-15 (46.7 percent) at the line.
