PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Colorado State University Pueblo men's and women's indoor track and field team concluded its indoor regular season here this weekend by competing at the 8th Annual Gorilla Indoor Classic that was hosted by Pittsburg State University and held at the Robert W. Plaster Center.
In its final tune-up before the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, which are scheduled for Feb. 24-25 in Alamosa, Colo., the ThunderWolves recorded 10 NCAA Division II Provisional times and set a school record in the women's shot put.
On the women's side, the top individual performance came from sophomore
Katherine Higgins (Mead, Colo./Ponderosa), who recorded a school record toss in the shot put of 15.56 meters (51'0.75") to finish in first place at the Gorilla Classic. Higgins' toss bettered Higgins' old school record of 15.19 meters the last year's Gorilla Classic. Higgins' school record shot put is ranked third in NCAA Division and the top mark this indoor season in the RMAC.
In addition to Higgins, freshman
Febe Wessels (Pretoria, South Africa) finished second overall in the event with an NCAA Division II provisional mark of 13.96 meters (45'9.75").
Along with Higgins and Wessels, sophomore
Helen Braybrook (Frieston, United Kingdom/Oakham School) also posted an NCAA Division II provisional mark in the 800 meters as she was fourth in the event with a time of 2:09.76. Braybrook's time is eighth-best in Division II and fourth-best in the RMAC this indoor season.
The other women's event that recorded an NCAA Division II provisional time came in the distance medley relay as the Pack finished third in the event with a time of 11:49.46, which is fifth-best in the RMAC and 19th-best in the Division II. Higgins also placed 12th in the weight throw with a toss of 15.46 meters (50'8.75"), while sophomore
Taylor Holland (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo County) was ninth in the 600 yard run with a time of 1:28.27.
Jadyn Herron-Jonap (Queen Creek, Ariz./Casteel) was 11th in the mile with a time of 5:02.87, while Margot Thomas Gatel was 15th in the mile with a time of 5:05.26.
Meanwhile, on the men's side, they had six NCAA Division II provisional marks this weekend.
The top performance for the CSU Pueblo men came in the shot put as
Nate Miller won the event with an NCAA provisional toss of 18.21 meters (59'9").
Justin Jenks (Helena, Mont./Capital) was third in the shot put with an NCAA provisional mark of 17.67 meters (57'11.75").
Junior
Kaleb Tipton (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) was fifth in the 800 meters with an NCAA provisional time of 1:50.93, while sophomore
Reece Sharman-Newell (Hampshire, England) was sixth in the mile run with an NCAA provisional time of 4:06.12. That time is 13th in the RMAC and 21st in Division II.
The distance medley team posted a seventh-place finish with an NCAA Division II provisional mark of 9:51.00, which is the 20th best mark in Division II. The members of the distance medley team were Sharman-Newell, Smith, Tipton and
Matisse Virey (Lyon, France).
Junior
Tyrell Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./Mesa Ridge) was eighth in the 400 meter with an NCAA Division II provisional mark of 48.16. That mark is second-best in the RMAC and 19th in Division II.
Miller was also 11th in the weight throw with a toss of 17.95 meters (58'10.75").
The Pack indoor track and field team will next be in action on Feb. 24-25 as they compete in the 2023 RMAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, which are schedule to be held in Alamosa, Colo., and is hosted by Adams State College.
