Women's Basketball Rallies in Second Half for 12-Point Home Win Over Chadron State

PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo women's basketball found its offensive groove here Saturday evening as the ThunderWolves rallied from a seven-point third quarter deficit to post a 62-50 victory over Chadron State in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at Massari Arena.
 
Saturday's win was the second straight for the Pack and improved their record to 12-12 overall and 9-9 in the RMAC, while CSC fell to 4-20 overall and 4-14 in the league. Despite the win, the Pack remains tied with Colorado Mesa for seventh in the league standings with two weeks to go in the regular season. CSU Pueblo and Colorado Mesa play each other next Saturday in Grand Junction, Colo.
 
In Saturday's game, the Pack trailed 27-24 at the half and watched the Eagles score the first four points of the third quarter to extend its lead to 31-24 just 74 seconds into the period, before the Pack would outscore the CSC, 23-5, over the final eight minutes of the third quarter to take a 47-36 lead into the final period. The Pack outscored the Eagles, 23-9 in the third quarter. The Pack would outscore the Eagles, 15-14 in the fourth quarter to post its second consecutive home win and improve to 10-3 at home this season. CSU Pueblo outscored CSC, 38-23 in the second half. 

Graduate student guard/forward Charisse Fairley (Colorado Springs, Colo./Fresno State) and graduate student guard JaNaiya Davis (Hewitt, Texas/Midway) combined for 30 points, 17 rebounds, five steals and four blocks in the win. In the second half, those two combined for 21 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
 
For the game, Fairley had 15 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, while Davis added 15 points, nine rebounds, four steals and a blocked shot. The third double-digit scorer for the Pack was sophomore guard Tomia Johnson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Florida Gulf Coast) added 10 points, four assists and five steals.
 
The Pack scored the first four points of the game, before CSC used a 7-1 run to take a 7-5 lead just four minutes into the game. The Eagles would eventually push its lead to 14-12, before Fairley drilled a trey with 1:19 left in the period to give the Pack a 15-14 lead after the opening 10 minutes of play.
 
CSU Pueblo would push its first quarter lead to as much as five points on two separate occasions in the second quarter, before CSC would close the quarter on an 8-0 run to turn a 24-19 deficit into a 27-24 lead at the half.
 
In the first half, the two teams combined to shoot 29 percent from the field and 18 percent from the 3-point line as the Pack shot 10-for-32 (31 percent) from the floor and 3-for-17 (18 percent) from the 3-point line, while CSC shot 27 percent (9-for-33) from the field and 2-for-11 (18 percent) from the 3-point line.
 
After the Eagles scored the first four points of the third quarter, the Pack scored 19 straight points to turn a 31-24 deficit into a 43-31 lead. The run was keyed by a combined nine points from Fairley and Davis and capped by a fast break lay-up by senior guard Amaya Lewis (Hobbs, N.M./New Mexico JC).
 
The Eagles would stop its nearly eight minutes scoreless streak with a trey from Samiyah Worrell with 1:06 left in the third period. Worrell's trey brought the Eagles within nine at 43-34.
 
Baskets by Johnson and Davis sandwiched around a basket by Worrell helped the Pack take a 47-36 lead after third period. The Pack shot 50 percent from the field and forced seven turnovers that led to 11 points.
 
CSC would open the fourth quarter by scoring five of the first six points to cut CSU Pueblo's lead to 48-41, before the Pack scored 12 of the next 16 points to push out to a 60-45 lead with 2:28 left in the game. The run began with a trey from Fairley and was capped by a lay-up from Davis.
 
The Eagles closed the game by scoring five of the final seven points to set the final margin.
 
Worrell paced the Eagles with 18 points, while Claudia Dolliger added seven points and seven rebounds off the bench. Ashayla Powers added five points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
 
For the game, the Pack shot 38 percent from the field and were 6-for-29 (21 percent) from the 3-point line, while CSC shot 30 percent from the field and 17 percent (4-for-23) from long distance.
 
The Pack were outrebounded, 53-35 in the game, but that rebound edge was negated by 21 turnovers by the Eagles, which led to 23 points for the ThunderWolves. The Pack had 12 steals and blocked seven shots in the win.
 
CSC recorded 18 offensive boards that led to an 11-5 edge in second chance points.
 
The Pack committed 10 turnovers in the game and had 12 assists.
 
Both teams struggled shooting free throws as the Pack were 8-for-14 (57 percent) from the line, while CSC was 8-for-13 (62 percent) from the line.
 
CSU Pueblo will return to road for back-to-back road games next weekend (Feb. 17-18) at Westminster and Colorado Mesa. The Pack will travel to Salt Lake City, Utah, for a 5 p.m. game on Friday, Feb. 17 against Westminster, before traveling to its game in Grand Junction on Saturday, Feb. 18 against Colorado Mesa at 7:30 p.m.
