ALAMOSA, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo women's basketball opened the road portion of its 2023-24 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schedule here Friday evening with a 69-62 setback to Adams State in Plachy Hall on the Adams State campus.
With the setback, the ThunderWolves fall to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in the league, while Adams State improved to 8-3 overall and 3-0 in the league. The Pack will conclude the two-game road trip with a 4 p.m. game Saturday, Dec. 9 in Durango, Colo., against Fort Lewis. Fort Lewis earned 64-57 home win Friday over New Mexico Highlands.
The Pack, who trailed 33-19 at the half and never held a lead in the game for the second straight contest, mounted a furious second rally against the Grizzlies as they scored 43 second half points and pulled within four points at 61-57 following three free throws by graduate student guard
Romola Dominguez (Denver, Colo./Central Arkansas) with 4:40 left in the game.
Following Dominguez's three free throws after she was fouled on a 3-point shot attempt, the Grizzles scored four straight points to push its lead 65-57 with 2:23 left in the game. The Pack, though, used a lay-up by Dominguez and a trey by junior guard
Landri Hudson (Aurora, Colo./University of Wyoming) to pull within 65-62 with 26 seconds left in the game. ASU would cap the scoring with Harmanie Dominguez scoring the final four points of the game to seal the Grizzlies fifth straight victory.
For the third straight game, redshirt junior forward
Alisha Little (Aurora, Colo./University of Northern Colorado) tallied a double-double of 24 points and 13 rebounds and added six blocked shots and four steals. The double-double was her third straight and Division II-leading seventh of the season.
In addition to Little, Hudson added 12 points and Dominguez finished with six points.
Little and Hudson combined to 23 of the Pack's 43 second half points to help assist in the second half rally.
The Pack got off to a slow start in Friday's game as ASU jumped out to a 20-14 lead after the opening 10 minutes of the game and the Grizzlies would extend its first quarter lead 33-19 at the half as the Pack were held to a season-low five second quarter points. In fact, the 19 first half points were also a season low for the Pack.
In the first half, the Pack had two more points than they had turnovers as they scored 19 points and committed 17 turnovers that led to 14 points for the Grizzlies in the opening 20 minutes of the game.
The Pack would begin their second half rally in the third quarter as the Pack closed the quarter on a 17-14 run to turn a 41-24 deficit into a 55-41 deficit at the end of the quarter. Both teams scored 22 points in the third quarter. Little and Hudson combined for 14 of those 22 points as Little tallied nine and Hudson had five points.
CSU Pueblo opened the fourth quarter by scoring eight of the first nine points to pull within 56-49 following a four-play play by Hudson as she fouled on a made trey just 90 seconds into the quarter.
After the Grizzlies pushed its lead to 59-49 with 7:20 left in the game, the Pack responded with an 8-2 run capped by Dominguez's three free throws to pull within four at 61-57.
Kiiyani Anitielu led the way offensively for the Grizzlies with a team-high 15 points and added six rebounds, while Riahana Davis chipped in with 14 points and Elaina Watson had 13 points. Dominguez was the fourth double-digit scorer with 11 points in the win.
The Pack held a 38-31 edge on the boards, but lost the turnover battle, 33-25. The Pack, though, only had 16 turnovers in the second half after committing 17 in the first half. Those 33 turnovers led to ASU holding a 26-19 edge in points off turnovers.
ASU committed 25 turnovers in the game, including 14 in the second half. The Pack scored 16 points of those 14 second half turnovers by the Grizzlies.
The Pack finished the game shooting 39 percent from the field and 29 percent (5-for-17) from the 3-point line, while Adams State shot 43 percent from the field and 33 percent (5-for-15) from long distance.
The two teams combined to shoot 37 free throws in the game as the Pack were 15-for-20 (75 percent) at the line, including going 11-12 (92 percent) at the line in the second half, while ASU was 12-for-17 (71 percent) at the line.
