Women's Basketball Falters in Second Half of Saturday's Road Setback to Fort Lewis

DURANGO, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo women's basketball saw its struggles in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play continue here Saturday evening as the ThunderWolves were outscored 41-23 in the second half of its 65-59 setback to Fort Lewis College in Whalen Gymnasium.

With the setback, the Pack dropped its third straight league play as they drop their record to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in the RMAC, while Fort Lewis improved to 6-4 overall and 3-1 in the league.

Saturday's loss came less than 24 hours after the Pack fell 69-62 at Adams State and about a week after the Pack suffered a 78-67 loss at home to Colorado Christian. The Pack's lone win in league play this season came at home on Dec. 1 against Chadron State as the Pack defeated the Eagles, 62-52.

In Saturday's setback, the Pack offense was paced a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds by freshman forward Leilani Love (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque), while junior guard Yara Garcia (Scottsbluff, Neb./Western Nebraska CC) scored a career high 13 points and added five rebounds. The 13 points scored by Garcia were her first points of the season as she entered Saturday's having played in all 10 games and not yet scored a point in a game.

Junior guard Landri Hudson (Aurora, Colo./University of Wyoming) and redshirt junior forward Autumn Watts (Centennial, Colo./McNeese State) each scored eight points in the loss.

The Skyhawks held redshirt junior forward Alisha Little (Aurora, Colo./Northern Colorado) was held to a season-low four points as she was 1-for-6 from the field and 0-for-3 from the 3-point line and was 2-for-2 from the free throw line. Prior to Saturday's game Little had scored in double figures in all 10 games this season and had recorded three straight double-doubles. Little did manage to pull down eight rebounds and blocked two shots.

It appeared early that the Pack would run away with the game as they outscored the Skyhawks, 23-15 in the first quarter and led by as much as 16 points at 34-18 following two free throws by Watts with 3:33 left in the second quarter. That 16-point lead was the largest of the game for either team.

Following Stewart's two free throws, FLC would close out the second quarter by scoring six of the quarter's final eight points to drop the Pack's lead to 36-24 at the half. It marked the first time this season the Pack lost when leading at the half as they are now 4-1 on the season when holding the halftime lead.

The Skyhawks would get back into Saturday's game in the third period as they outscored the Pack, 22-13, in the quarter to drop the Pack's lead to 49-46 heading into the fourth and final quarter.

FLC would dominate the early part of the fourth quarter as they opened the quarter by scoring 11 of the first 12 points to take a 57-52 lead with 3:45 left in the game. The Skyhawks' lead eventually grew to as much as seven points at 60-53 with 2:35 remaining in the contest.

The Pack, though, would respond by scoring six of the next eight points to pull within 62-59 following two free throws by Garcia with 50 seconds left. The Skyhawks would seal its win by hitting three of four free throws over the final 47 seconds of the contest.

Kelsey Sorensen paced the Skyhawks offense with 14 points, while Lanae Billy and Samantha Wattawa each scored 11 points in the win. Katie Gallery fell one point shy of double digits as she finished with nine points.

For the game, the Pack shot 33 percent from the field and was just 4-for-25 (16 percent) from the 3-point line, while Fort Lewis shot 40 percent from the floor and 21 percent from the 3-point line.

The Pack dominated on the boards as they held a 52-24 edge on the glass, including collecting 17 offensive rebounds that led to a 17-4 edge in second chance points. In addition to Love's 10 rebounds and Little's eight rebounds, Watts added nine boards.

But the Skyhawks made up for the rebound disparity as they forced the Pack to turn the ball over 26 times, including 12 turnovers in the second half. Fort Lewis held a 21-8 edge in points off turnovers.

Saturday's contest was marred by fouls as the two teams each recorded 24 fouls and the teams combined to shoot 50 free throws as the Pack were 21-for-26 (80.8 percent) from the free throw line, while FLC was 15-for-24 (62.5 percent) at the line.

The Pack will look to put the brakes on its three-game losing streak next Friday, Dec. 15 as they host South Dakota Mines in a 5:30 p.m. game at Massari Arena to close out their first semester schedule.
