PUEBLO, Colo. – Redshirt junior forward
Alisha Little (Aurora, Colo./Northern Colorado) recorded her second straight double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds here Saturday, but the Colorado State University Pueblo women's basketball team never held a lead en route to suffering a 78-67 loss to Colorado Christian in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at Massari Arena.
With the setback, the Pack snaps its four-game winning streak and drops its record to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the RMAC, while CCU improved to 5-3 and 1-1 in the league. Saturday's game also concluded a season-high five game homestand for the Pack as they 4-1 on the homestand.
Litlte's double-double was RMAC-leading sixth of the season and 11th of her Pack career. She also added four assists, one steal and one block in the contest.
In addition to Little, junior guard
Landri Hudson (Aurora, Colo./University of Wyoming) added 14 points and junior guard
Shamahra Henderson (Denver, Colo./Cowley CC) added a season-high nine points off the bench and had three steals.
CCU, who led by as much at 14 points with 4:06 left in the fourth quarter, but the Pack would try to mount a late rally as they scored nine of the next 11 points to pull within 74-67 following a lay-up by Henderson with 1:12 left in the game. The run began with a lay-up by Henderson and after Maggie Hutka hit two free throws to give the Cougars a 74-60 lead, the Pack used a basket by Little and a 3-pointer from Hudson to pull within seven points.
That would be as close as the Pack would get in the game as CCU made all four it free throw attempts and held the Pack scoreless over the 25 seconds of the contest.
CCU put three players in double figures led by 21 points and seven rebounds off the bench from Hutka. In addition to Hutka, Nicole Bowlin added 16 points and Dasiya Jones totaled 13 points and added 10 rebounds for a double-double.
CCU shot 71 percent from the field and made all its 3-point shot attempts as they jumped out to a 25-15 lead after the opening 10 minutes of play. Junior guard
Tomia Johnson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Florida Gulf Coast) and Hudson combined for nine of the Pack's 15 points.
The Pack, though, would respond in the second quarter as they used a 10-4 run over a span of three-plus minutes to turn a 28-18 deficit into a 32-28 deficit. The run began with a free throw by freshman guard
Jolene Ramiro (Aurora, Colo./Eaglecrest) and was capped by a lay-up from Little.
CCU would answer right back as they scored nine of the next 11 points to push its lead to 41-30 with 2:35 left in the quarter. The Pack would close the half by scoring five of the final six points to cut CCU's lead to 42-35 at the half.
The third quarter belonged to the Cougars as they extended its seven-point halftime lead to 61-48 heading into the final quarter of play. CCU outscored the Pack, 19-13 in the quarter.
CCU opened the final quarter by scoring 11 of the first 21 points to push its lead to 72-58 with 4:06 left in game, before the Pack responded with a late rally to get back into game. The Pack won the fourth quarter, 19-17.
For the game, the Pack shot 37 percent from the field and made just five of its 23 3-pointers as they shot 22 percent from the 3-point line. Meanwhile, CCU shot 44 percent from the field and 40 percent from the 3-point line.
The Pack were outrebounded, 42-33 as the Pack had 15 offensive rebounds. The Cougars, though, who had 12 offensive rebounds held a 19-8 edge in second chance points.
The Pack won the turnover battle and they had just 12 turnovers to 15 for CCU. CSU Pueblo also had 18 assists including four each by Litlte, Johnson and graduate student guard
Romola Dominguez (Denver, Colo./Central Arkansas).
CCU, though, made the biggest impact in the game at the free throw line as they made 24 of their 25 free throws, including going 16-for-16 at the line in the second half. The Pack shot 62.5 percent (10-for-16) at the line.
The Pack will look to rebound next weekend as they hit the road for back-to-back road games on Friday, Oct. 8 at Adams State and on Saturday, Oct. 9 at Fort Lewis. Tip-off for the Adams State game is set for 5:30 p.m., with the Fort Lewis game scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
