Chance Fuller (Arlington, Texas/Fort Hays State) is among 38 nominees for the 2023 Harlon Hill Trophy, the NCAA Division II football equivalent to the Heisman Trophy.
Fuller is one of 10 nominees from Super Region Four, which includes schools from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), the Lone Star Conference (LSC) and the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) make up the 33-team NCAA Super Region Four this season.
During the 2023 season, Fuller finished second in the RMAC in passing yards (2,910), passing yards per game (264.5) and led the league in completions per game (22.0) and was third in completion percentage (.630) and fourth in total offense (260.7). He also set a new single season school record for touchdown passes with 34 and he is one of four active Division II quarterbacks to pass for 10,000 yards, gain 10,000 yards of total offense and throw 100 career touchdown passes.
On the season, Fuller, who was named an Honorable Mention All-RMAC selection, was 242-for-384 passing with 34 touchdown passes and seven interceptions and had an efficiency of 152.3. He recorded four games with 300 or more passing yards and tossed four or more touchdown passes in five games, including three games with five touchdowns passes. He finished the regular season fifth in Division II in touchdown passes, seventh in Division II in completions per game, eighth in Division II in passing yards and 13th in Division II in touchdowns responsible for.
Fuller's 2023 performance helped him finish ranked fourth on the school's single season total offense chart (2,868), second in single season pass attempts (384), second in single season pass completions (242), fourth in single season passing yards (2,910) and tie for first in touchdowns responsible for (34) and holds the school single season mark for touchdown passes (34).
Fuller becomes the first Pack football player to be nominated for the Harlon Hill Trophy since former Pack running back Cameron McDondle was selected as a finalist for the award in 2015.
Fuller is one of 17 quarterbacks and one of 19 seniors that have been nominated for this year's Harlon Hill Trophy, including one of six quarterbacks nominated from Super Region Four.
The 38 nominees will be pared down to eight national finalists – two from each of the NCAA super regions – before a winner is announced on Dec. 15 and the winner will be honored at the Little Rock Touchdown Club awards banquet on Friday, Jan. 12, 2024. The trophy is named for the late Harlon Hill, a University of North Alabama star who went on to fame in the NFL with the Chicago Bears. It is sponsored and presented by the Little Rock Touchdown Club and Great American Conference.
In addition to Fuller, the other nominees from the RMAC for the Harlon Hill Trophy are Colorado School of Mines senior quarterback John Matocha and South Dakota Mines junior receiver Ben Noland. Matocha took home the Harlon Hill Trophy in 2022 and is looking to become the fifth repeat winner of the award that began in 1986.
The other nominees from Super Region Four are Bemidji State senior quarterback Brandon Alt, Minnesota State junior running back Shan Butler-Lawson, UT Permian Basin senior quarterback Kenny Hrncir, Winona State senior linebacker Clay Schueffner, Minnesota State-Moorhead sophomore quarterback Jack Strand, Central Washington junior safety Tanner Volk and Minnesota Duluth sophomore quarterback Kyle Walljasper.
Fuller helped lead the Pack football team to an 8-3 overall record and a 7-2 mark in the RMAC and they ended the season winning seven consecutive games after opening the 2023 season with a 1-3 record. All three of the Pack's losses came to teams that advanced to the NCAA Playoffs (Grand Valley State, Western Colorado, and Mines) and have posted a combined record of 31-3 on the season.
