ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Colorado State University Pueblo men's and women's indoor track and field team completed the first day of action here Friday at the University of New Mexico Team Open held at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
On Friday's first day of competition, the ThunderWolves competed in five total events each for the men and women. The first day of competition featured eight events, while the women had 10 events on the day.
At Friday's first day of action, CSU Pueblo set five season best marks and earned NCAA provisional marks in each of the events they competed in.
On the women's side, the highlight of the day was a first place finish in the 600 meter run from sophomore
Helen Braybrook (Frieston, United Kingdom/Oakham School), who ran a season-best time of 1:33.19 to take home first place honors in the event. In addition to Braybrook, four other Pack runners finished in the Top 10 as sophomore
Taylor Holland (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo County) was fifth with a time of 1:37.83, while sophomore
Ella Harris (Star, Idaho, Eagle) was eighth with a time of 1:39.07. Freshman
Jadyn Herron-Jonap (Queen Creek, Ariz./Casteel) and freshman
Elodie Hebert (Sherbrooke, Quebec/Cegep de Sherbrooke) were ninth and 10th with times of 1:39.90 and 1:40.83 respectively.
The other season best time was turned in by freshman
Gabrielle Dunich (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo Central) in the 200 meter dash as she ran a time of 27.14, which was altitude adjusted to a 27.21.
Sophomore
Margot Thomas-Gatel (Chapet, Ile-de-France, France/Notre Dame Les Oiseax) was fourth in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:25.61. In addition to Thomas-Gatel, redshirt freshman
Sarah Renberg (Fresno, Calif./Edison) was sixth with a time of 10:52.21 and freshman
Halle Schmitz (Arvada, Colo./Pomona) was 15th with a time of 11:18.42.
In the only field event the Pack women competed in on Friday was the weight throw as sophomore
Olivia Mikaelian (Albuquerque, N.M./El Dorado) was fifth in the event with a mark of 17.02 meters (55.10.25"), while sophomore
Katherine Higgins (Mead, Colo./Ponderosa) was 20th with a mark of 14.81 meters (48'7.25").
The other running event the women competed in was the 400 meter dash as senior
Erin Case (Parker, Colo./Loveland) was 11th with a time of 1:01.61.
Meanwhile, the CSU Pueblo men got three season best marks and posted two Top 5 finishes in the five events that competed in.
The best finish came from fifth-year senior
Matisse Virey (Lyon, France) in the 3,000 meters as he posted a season best time of 8:36.36 to finish in second place. In addition to Virey, junior
Matthew Roberds (Colorado Springs, Colo./Mesa Ridge) was sixth with a time of 8:47.53, while junior
Daniel Beam (Rio Rancho, N.M./Western New Mexico) was seventh with a time of 8:50.59 and junior
Lucas Westbrook (Loveland, Colo./Loveland) was 11th with a time of 8:58.82.
In the 400 meters, freshman
Ryan King (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo West) was fourth with a time of 51.25.
Junior
Tyrell Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./Mesa Ridge) posted a season-best time of 21.81 (adjusted to 21.88) in the 200 meter dash.
Senior
Carl Schmidt (Wiesbaden, Germany/Elly-Heuss) was ninth in the long jump (7.03 meters / 23'0.75") and junior
Terrel Johnson (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley) was 11th with a jump of 6.48 meters (22'3").
In the final event of the first day for CSU Pueblo was the weight throw. Senior
Justin Jenks (Helena, Mont./Helena Capital) was eighth with a season-best toss of 17.87 meters (58'7.5"). In addition to Jenks, senior
Nate Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo./Widefield) and sophomore
Lucas Moran (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo West) were ninth and 11th respectively with marks of 16.73 meters (54'10.75") and 13.25 meters (43'5.75").
The Pack indoor track and field teams will conclude play in the New Mexico Team Open on Saturday, Jan. 28.
