Track & Field Teams Record Five Season Best Marks, Win Two Events at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Colorado State University Pueblo men's and women's track and field teams continued its 2022-23 indoor season here Saturday at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico and held at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
 
At Saturday's first meet of the 2023 calendar year, the ThunderWolves men and women's teams combined to post five season best performances and win two individual events. All of CSU Pueblo's times and marks on Saturday were NCAA Division II Provisional marks.
 
Among the teams competing for the men and women at Saturday's meet were Division I powerhouse programs Texas, UCLA, USC, New Mexico, Balor, Georgia, along with Division II schools – Adams State, Eastern New Mexico, and West Texas A&M.
 
The CSU Pueblo men turned in three of those five season best performances as senior Carl Schmidt (Wiesbaden, Germany/Elly-Heuss School) placed 22nd overall in the 400-meter run with a season-best time of 49.89. In addition to Schmidt, junior Tyrell Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./Mesa Ridge) was 23rd in the 400-meter with with a time of 50.10.
 
The lone win for CSU Pueblo came in the 800-meter run as junior Caleb Tipton (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) defeated a field of 13 runners with a time of 1:31.08.
 
Sophomore Reece Sharman-Newell (Hampshire, England) turned in a second-place finish in the mile run with a time of 4:12.76.
 
Four ThunderWolves' placed in the Top 8 of the 3,000-meter run as sophomore Kaleb Beloy (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage) finished third with a season-best time of 8:42.47. In addition to Beloy, junior Matthew Roberds (Colorado Springs, Colo./Mesa Ridge) was fourth with a time of 8:43.57, while senior Daniel Beam (Rio Rancho, N.M./Western New Mexico) was seventh with a time of 8:56.32 and junior Lucas Westbrook (Loveland, Colo./Loveland) was eighth with a time of 8:59.75.
 
Senior Justin Jenks (Helena, Mont./Helana Capital) and senior Nate Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo./Widefield) were third and fourth in the shot put as Jenks recorded a season-best mark of 18.01 meters (59' 1.25") to finish third and Miller was fourth with a mark of 17.91 meters (58' 9.25").
 
Junior Terrel Johnson (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley) was eighth in the high jump (1.85 meters / 6' 0.75") and 12th in the 60-meter hurdle preliminaries with a time of 8.75.
 
Miller and Jenks went 10th and 12th respectively in the weight throw as Miller was 10th with a mark of 17.51 meters (57' 5.5") and Jenks was 12th with a mark of 16.72 meters (54' 10.25").
 
Meanwhile, on the women's side, the first season best performance came from sophomore Ella Harris (Star, Idaho/Eagle) as she was eighth in the unseeded 400-meter dash with a time of 59.34.

The next season best time was turned in by sophomore Helen Braybrook (Frieston, United Kingdom/Oakham School) as she was third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:13.05, which was converted to a 2:12.31. In addition to Braybrook, two other Pack runners placed in the Top 10 as sophomore Taylor Holland (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo County) was seventh with a time of 2:19.47 and freshman Jadyn Herron-Jonap (Queen Creek, Ariz./Casteel) was eighth with a time of 2:19.53.
 
CSU Pueblo's lone win came in the 3,000-meter run as sophomore Margot Thomas-Gatel (Chatpet, Ile-de-France/Notre Dame Les Oiseaux) ran a first-place time of 10:15.31.
 
Sophomore Mikayla Jones (Aurora, Colo./Vista Peak Prep) was 12th in the high jump (1.60 meters / 5' 3") and 15th in the triple jump (10.62 meters / 34' 10.25").
 
In the weight throw, sophomore Olivia Mikaelian (Albuquerque, N.M./El Dorado) was eighth with a mark of 16.93 meters (55' 6.5") and freshman Febe Wessels (Pretoria, South Africa) was ninth in the shot put with a mark of 14.03 meters (46' 0.5"). Sophomore Katherine Higgins (Mead, Colo./Ponderosa) was 10th in the shot put with a toss of 13.85 meters (45' 5.25").
 
The Pack men's and women's track and field teams will continue its indoor season next weekend (Jan. 27-28) as they return to Albuquerque, N.M., to compete in the UNM Team Open.
