ThunderWolves continue hot start with victory at CCU

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (Sept. 16, 2022) - Colorado State University Pueblo volleyball improved to a program-best 10-1 on the season and remains unbeaten in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play following a 3-1 (25-23, 25-14, 21-25, 25-23) win Friday at Colorado Christian.

The ThunderWolves recorded a .308 hitting mark and both teams finished with 56 kills in the match.

Payton Van Veen led the ThunderWolves with 12 kills followed closely by Jazzy Espinoza who finished with 11 kills. Defensively, the duo combined for ten blocks and Sabrina King (21) and Grace Hern (20) accounted for over 40 assists.

In the first set, the ThunderWolves went on a 4-point rally and went ahead 10-7. The defense withstood a late surge in the set and came away with a 25-23 win.

CSU Pueblo dominated the second set and never trailed. Midway through the set and the Pack ahead by one, CSU Pueblo went on a 12-2 scoring run to go up 2-0 in the match.

The third set, CCU jumped ahead from the start and a late-set rally attempt by the Pack fell short in a 21-25 set three loss.

In the next set, the ThunderWolves offense regained control and was able to slam the door on the Cougars for the win.

CSU Pueblo (10-1, 3-0 RMAC) will next face-off against its second ranked opponent of the season and stay on the road and take on No. 4 MSU Denver on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Auraria Event Center. Both teams enter the match with identical records.
