PUEBLO, Colo. (April 22, 2022) – In a thrilling and recording breaking senior night victory, Colorado State University Pueblo women's lacrosse (3-11, 3-7 RMAC) were able to out-pace Westminster College (4-9, 4-6 RMAC) 19-15.
Emily Eller solidified her name in CSU Pueblo history and netted her 112th career goal to stand alone as the Pack's all-time leading goal scorer in history.
At halftime of the contest, Eller and
Ashley Hendricks were recognized as part of senior night for their tenures as CSU Pueblo women's lacrosse athletes.
Eller kicked off the night right and netted her first goal of the evening just two minutes into the contest. Westminster quickly responded with a three-goal run of its own and put the Pack in a 3-1 deficit with 7:43 to go in the first. Eller clinched career goal 109 with 2:32 to go in the quarter to pull the Pack within one.
Westminster claimed a 4-2 advantage after one frame of play. With 11:36 to go in the second, Hendricks represented the senior class well and was able to give the Pack their third goal of the night. The Griffins added another to their tally, but this time
Maddie Miller found the answer. Miller raced down the field after gaining a draw control and leapt her way to a acrobatic score.
After
Samantha Schmidt caused a Westminster turnover and led a Pack clear,
Caira Lessick tied things up with 7:51 to go in the second quarter. Headed into the halftime festivities, the ThunderWolves found themselves trailing narrowly 7-5.
The third quarter was when the Pack were able to hit their stride. Hendricks started the run with a free position goal and was soon backed by her teammates. After a
Baylee Mee draw control and a Hendricks shot off the post,
Caira Lessick picked up a ground ball, threw the ball around the horn and helped the Pack tie up at the game at 7-7 following a Mee goal off an assist from Miller.
Miller gave the Pack an 8-7 lead with her second goal of the night. Hendricks clinched her senior night hat trick with 11:51 to go in the third quarter.
Sedona Sargent topped off a five-goal run with a tally of her own with over 10 minutes to go in the frame.
After a Westminster score, Eller kept up her historic night. Off an assist by Mee, Eller tied the all-time record of 110 career goals scored. Then, three minutes later, Schmidt dished an assist to Eller, as the graduate senior etched her name into Pack history with her 111th career tally to set the all-time record.
Lessick tacked on one more goal in the final minute of the third and gave the Pack a 13-9 advantage headed into the fourth.
Westminster closed the gap early in the fourth. With 10:42, the Griffins made it clear they would not give up and trimmed the Pack lead to 13-11. The Pack were able to end their small six-minute scoring drought with Hendricks' fourth goal of the night.
Sargent soon followed with another goal of her own, as the midfielder fired a missile from far-out to give the ThunderWolves a three-goal advantage. The advantage was trimmed down to one but another impressive score from Sargent gave the Pack a two-goal cushion with 5:15 to go in the game.
The win was within reach, but CSU Pueblo needed one more insurance goal to put the game away. Eller stepped up and logged her fifth goal of the night off the feed from Lessick. Mee netted two more scores for the Pack's tally and put the game away for a CSU Pueblo 19-15 victory over Westminster.
Eller's record-breaking night saw a season-high five goals to cap off a perfect senior night. Hendricks was able to continue her impressive season with four goals, her third game with four or more tallies. Sargent and Mee each recorded hat tricks in the 19-15 win.
CSU Pueblo will look to keep it going Sunday afternoon, as the Pack take on Colorado Mesa in a home season finale.
